Apparently there is an on the spot fine if you make a noise after midnight. As we found out on Saturday night when the police turned up at 12.30. This was the first time in 2.5 years that we have had an outside party. The locals will be on the phone to the police at 12.00 if you have loud music after then.

Pity it doesn't apply to the loudspeaker that wakes us up at 4am every morning! A year after we moved to a quiet country area louspeakers were put up one day with no notice only 50yds from our bedroom window (& a predominently British Estate). Before then we used to like to hear the call to prayer in the distance. My husband hasn't had a decent nights sleep since!

=> Yeah! Let's forcibly convert the TRNC locals to Roman Catholiscm - these RC fairy tale believers only start ringing the church bells at 8 or 9 am. Sleep tight, Mr. sunnyday.

How dare these people , in their muslim country, disturb our sleep by calling the faithful to prayer, we who are visitors in this country should surely have priority over the local population. Of course, there is an alternative, go back to the UK and live amongst predominantly british people if you are unable or unwilling to integrate into the local way of life.

Rowlo, I did respect them, but if I had wanted to live next to a Mosque I would have done. Why did they put speakers by 25 British homes after they have all been built & lived in?

If you are awake for the first call to prayer, could you pop down to the mosque and do a little survey of your own to discover how many of the faithfull, bother turning up?

Also, armed with your findings, I'm sure many of the "locals" would support you.

Might it have been wise to do a little more research about Muslim religion before moving to a predominantly Muslim country.

No muslim should have to travel more than 5 minutes by foot to reach a point of prayer, pretty much means that your gonna hear it whether you like it or not, there is of course double glazing and sound proofing

Yes but the loudspeakers (3 of them) are on a telegraph pole on the old coast road where there are about 6 local houses scattered over 1/2 mile, but they put is outside our new estate of 25 houses, rather than near the locals. You could here the call to prayer without it from the mosque in the village. We have all our windows shut at present, music on, aircon on & I can still hear the call to prayer outside. So imagine what its like with in our bedroom which is the closest room to the speakers. When you live here you can't afford to have the aircon on all night & have to have the windows open.

Who cares about water, electricity, title deeds and what other little nuisances have you... Haha!

Call the TRNC ministry of "Too much Dust and Loudspeakers" and complain.

sunnyday

You have two options, you can convert to the Islamic faith or you can go out and buy a pair of wire cutters.

Shayna Beach bar in Catalkoy has loud disco music playing until 4am in the morning several nights a week. We are at least a mile away but can hear it on Friday night, Saturday night & other nights too.

Maybe the locals ignore that. The latest time for a music licence is apparently 1am, so how do they get away with that??

Just spent the summer back in UK listening to next doors precocious brats shouting at each other , motor bikes & wagons roaring up & down the road, police & ambulance sirens going constantly , Oh and mustn't forget the pitter patter of raindrops constantly falling!

What I wouldn't give for the call to prayer, the cock crowing, and all the other lovely sounds of Baspinar! roll on a week on Saturday! (Next time I go back to UK I think I'll tape the sounds & play them over a loudspeaker here).

After a year you should be used to it. Our local call to prayer used to bother me but now, I don't even notice it. It's like the cockerel, the only person it doesn't bother is the owner, buy one, see if it works

I believe I know which estate you mean as we have friends living there who are totally fed up with being kept awake until 3- 4am by the british residents on this estate partying and bellowing foul language to each other on a pretty regular basis - even though they are all in the same garden. How come it's ok to not show respect for their fellow residents but noise pollution becomes a problem when it is the locals and their faith? I can understand that you're peeved that the police came to stop your party having had no problems since you moved there (obviously you don't come into the raucous/foul mouthed party brigade) but have you considered apologising to the locals who may have complained as they were rightly upset at being kept awake by the noise? Have you asked that the loudspeakers be turned down slightly so it isn't so intrusive?
