No, but I'm sure someone on here will help.

Once you have resolved the current problem the lesson is - When you leave your appartment, remove the fuse and keep it indoors until you need it again - sad but very true.

Regards,

Ozbey.

There was a thread on this a little while ago and someone said you can get the fuse on ebay - 200343358486. Price is £4.20 and includes 1st class postage.

The block that Nico44 is talking about is because no one has moved in yet only a old turk Cypriot lady who has not had hers nicked which is no surprise she probably let them in and said take them

From memory, as this happened to a friend. With your last Elex bill payed go to the sub power station office near the Girne Police station and plead on their sympathies as they'll either give you one free or charge you 80TL.

You're lucky if they have just taken the fuse. They normally take the whole housing which costs quite a lot more. I assume this is what Brinsley was referring to at 80TL. We bought one from Kib-tec a year or so ago and it was £25.

A kind Turkish neighbour who was renting the apartment underneath ours was eventually cut off for non payment. He also failed to pay rent (English owners - big mistake). He simply wired his electric through someone else's meter. To cover his tracks he smashed other peoples meters including mine. When spotted by the meter reader, the meter was removed. Luckily my friend spotted what had happened just before i came over. The builder of the apartments took me to Kibtek to sort it out, thank goodness. It cost me about £50 I think for a complete new meter. The police knew what the guy had done but declined to take action on the grounds that they knew the man & that they thought he was mad.

I've just looked at the picture of the fuse being shown on the link. My fuse is 60amp but has two flat prongs where it plugs in to the meter. The one in the photo doesn't seem to have those and looks more like a larger version of a 13amp fuse used in a 3 pin plug. Have I got it wrong?

its happened to us so much. Our landlords at the Brasserie just keep steeling our electic until we nearly blew the place up. What an attitude they had when confronted. They agreed to pay us monthly but no interest which we were charged. Report it get them to act on it. Stop it for once and all xxxxxx

You're not wrong Hector. The fuse we had stolen was a big plastic thing with prongs. Can't imagine why someone would bother to open this housing to remove a fuse (if indeed this is what is happening). Hope people aren't confused and buying the wrong thing on Ebay.

Hi Members,

This sounds like a regular problem in TRNC...... I would advise people to get a secure lockable made around your Electric meter, Main fuse and consumer unit! This will stop the quick access opportunist THIEF!

Meanwhile, If your are leaving your property for a while, switch the main big switch off on the consumer unit, then remove the main big fuse and keep it safe somewhere.

A question however, this fuse should be protected by a wire seal. In the UK, technically it is an offence and illegal to remove this seal and tamper with the main fuse as it is the property of the Electrical supply company!

So can somebody please answer the question with regards to the main fuse and seal?

look forward to your replies

As some of you may know i run a rentals agency too and care for 10 houses, hours before a client was due to arrive at one of "my" houses the fuse was stolen. Mad dash to the electric board to be told no fuses available and certainly not today. however on the PDQ i was told to pay 52 TL (the reconnection charge of cut of) and that very same day the electric would be reconencted but just with a wire. It was and does the same job and no chance of "electric/fuse" being stolen again.

having in the past paid 170 TL and wasted over an hour and a half to get a replacement fuse i think this is the way forward

Hi All,

In reference to my last message I was refering to the law/rules in TRNC with regards to tampering with the main fuse and wire seal.

Cheers

after ours was stolen, our neighbour had a wooden box with a lockable glass door fitted. The meter can be read through the glass. Had no trouble since, about 4 years now.

Im sure both Hector & joandjelly are correct in that the fuse on the link fits into the housing which has the two prongs on.

I have a few of these fuses complete with fuse carriers (the plastic thingy with the two copper "prongs") brought out from the UK. I also have some fuses without the carriers.

please contact me at vaughan@sunnycyprus.net if you want any.

Whoa !! Careful all, it looks like there might be more than one fuse configuration - pronged or otherwise. There may even be variance in current rating. The one shown on Ebay is 100 amp but the description states 60 amp. When I challenged the seller, he said the pic was wrong and it should be 60. This is fine if you are already out there and can see what it should be, but for us poor souls still in the UK with fuses nicked in TRNC it is difficult for us to know which is correct.

I know which are the correct ones although there are some obsolete ones in old Cypriot houses in villages.

All the houses built in the last 5-10 years use the new type, which I have in stock.

It is the fuse and its carrier that gets nicked. I have both at my office in Girne.

With all due respect to TRNC Vaughan, I think the very purpose of this thread was to establish the type so they can be bought considerably cheaper in the UK. If the fuses are £4 or so in the UK, how much are yours, Vaughan ?

The fuses are quite cheap in the UK. In TRNC you can't buy them as KibTek have a monopoly on them. Here in the TRNC we are not in competition with the UK we are in competition with the cost of sourcing one locally. Of course, if you know what you need and bring one out with you from the UK it will be much cheaper - but you could say that about lots of things.

I have for a long time advised folks to get a spare and bring it with them. It can't be nice turning up at 3am on a Saturday morning to find your fuse nicked - no lights, no water, no a/c...and KibTek not open until Monday. Folks still get caught out though and for that reason I have imported some fuses for emergencies.

Thanks Vaughan. There is still the question of the fuse carrier if that's gone as well, and I believe they vary depending on the manufacturer of the distribution board. I presume yours are correct for all recent TRNC boards ?

It is usually the carrier that is taken along with the fuse inside it.

Yes, my spares are compatable with current KibTek installations.

BTW, putting a wire link in the fuse carrier socket may reinstate power but will not serve as a proper fuse and could be very dangerous. Definately a very temporary measure and not one I would recommend.

One of my neighbours fuse was stolen in kyrenia last year

I asked,why would anyone nick a fuse?

She said that,if you dont pay your bill,kib-tek comes and cuts you off by taking away your fuse, and with no electric they just came and took ours.

Thats just going by what I was told!

True or not I dont know

Thats a very common scenario. KibTek taking someones fuse justs sets a chain off.

I think you are right. When Kibtek cut you off they do just take the fuse out. Hence people stealing others fuses. Kibtek do ok as victim invariably go to them to get a replacement. Not sure what Kibtek then do re original customer who they cut off who is then racking up bigger electricity bill. I think they then take the meter away completely. That then leads to the culprit wiring into a neighbours meter with a simple wire as described above.

Kibtek meter readers certainly are liable to take your fuse if your account is in arrears. When my bank's *autopayment system failed to pay, the meter reader had my 60 amp fuse in his hand and would only give it back when shown the paperwork and told that the bank should have made payment , and that I'd had this *arrangement for 3 years.

Kib-tec will reconnect the electric with a wire but then they usually return about a week later with the new fuse if it has been paid for as this is what happened to us.
