I know there are some Mac users on this forum. You may be interested to know that I did an update to Mac OS 10.5.8 without any problems, followed by the latest Security Update. The system is very stable, although some had serious problems. If you want to read about problems after updating and how to fix 'em: http://www.macfixit.com . P.S. 1: Always repair permissions before and after OS updating! 2: Remove all peripherals from your computer before updating an OS version!

Did anyone else update to OS 10.5.8? Or do you stick to another version of 9.x.x or 10.x.x? Which one and why?

Dutch, Went from Tiger to Lepoard late last year and it was much better - however, did not do it right and still have Tiger sat on the drive in the background so this winter will strip the whole lot off and start again. At the moment it is sat in the cupboard sulking because I won't talk to it!!! Any idea where I can get a USB External CD/DVD Rom from by the way?

RE msg 6, waddo: (...) Any idea where I can get a USB External CD/DVD Rom from by the way? (...) => My internal CD/DVD reader/writer in a PowerBook G4 gave up and I tried many computer shops in TRNC to buy a replacement - to no avail. I finally succeeded in an authorized Mac shop (very helpful people!) in South Nicosia. I bought an external FireWire Lacie Super Writemaster (CD/DVD) which is very, very fast writing 52x speed CD's etc (even double-layer DVD's!). Greycom also sells USB peripherals afaik. His prices are only slightly higher than in Holland - he has to import his stuff from Greece. Details: Greycom, Mr. Tefkros Olympios, phone: 0035722668535, email: unic@spidernet.com.cy If you want to visit the shop, call me for directions: 0533 864 5433. Good luck!

Just so you guys know, you can also install Leopard from an external USB hard disc or pen drive (4Gb+). Using this method takes less than 15mins to reinstall the whole system. Make sure you back up or use time machine to restore your data first. I recommend that you dont do an archive and install but do a complete fresh install then apply the 10.5.8 update for a fast and stable Mac. Good luck! D

Also I should add that if you're running an Intel Mac, you may want to wait a month and install Snow Leopard (10.6) when it's available, it installs much faster than Leopard. D

RE msg 8, SunloverK: How did you get a 4.7 Gig DVD (official Mac OS X install DVD) on a 4 Gig USB stick? How did you tell your Mac to start up from the USB stick (afaik it needs some tricky work in the Terminal to do it). Usually a Mac only starts up from external FireWire peripherals or DVD's. I'm very interested to read your reply!

Hi Crusader, you'd actually want something bigger than 4Gb (you can fit it on 4gb but only with some work stripping down the image - removing foreign language files etc but I dont reccomend this course of action) so maybe 8Gb, or better still a little external 2.5" usb hard disc with 10Gb of free space. Essentially you use Disk Utility to make an image of the Leopard install DVD and restore that image to your blank external hard drive, choosing CD Image with Read/Write as the image type. Seperatley, an intel mac will boot from an external USB drive of any sort as long as its formatted as HFS+ Journaled and not FAT. I'm one of the PC support guys who advertises in Cyprus Today and have used this method to re-image some of my clients Macs in the past, as well as my own of course. Hope this helps! D
