Hi all Just wondering if anybody could recommend a good optician as both my wife and me are due for new glasses and are over in October. I was wondering how they compare in price to uk, we usually go to specsavers but after the apalling service last time we wont be using them in future. So if anyone has any advice on price and speed of service ie making up glasses i would be interested to know. Many thanks Tigger

I wouldn't recommend anyone over here, if you go to the International Eye Clinic , as my husband did then you get your prescription, you then go to the shop to get your specs made up, if there is anything wrong they both blame each other and you are stuck with a pair of specs worth £200 that do not work!!! We ended up over in the south as the International Eye Clinic in the TRNC did not even notice that my husband had cataracts!! They just kept selling him new glasses for reading with a different prescription and new contact lenses for distance. We would not waste any more money here, okay it costs more in the south but at least they are professional ie they found the cataracts. The guy we found was trained in Moorfield Hospital, London which I believe is the best eye hospital in Europe.

We use Dr Mustafa Guvenir in Lefkosa, tel: 0392 223 6640 email drguvenir@yahoo.com. We went to him for 2nd Opinion after International Eye Clinic wrongly diagnosed our 15 year old daughter with glaucoma... May be best to visit the clinic to make an appointment, the receptionist's English isn't too good. Drive to Lefkosa, straight ahead at big roundabout with boulders on sticks, go past hospital on LHS and do U-turn at mini roundabout. Take next left, just after hospital lights, turn left again, road goes round to right and then take left again - park in car park on RHS and Optician is in apartment block opposite.

There's a good doctor in Girne, who prescribes what you want and not what you don't need/want (the greedy lady at the Girne Eye Clinic, who finds problems - she is ready to operate on - where they are not). Here are the details (I got them - thanks again! - from someone on this board): Oogarts (Eye doctor), Celiker Hatahanesi 20 Temmuz Stadum arkasi. 03928154950. Mail: datakan@kktc.net . Op. Dr. S. Deniz Atakan. If you need directions, call me on 0533 864 5433 (easier for me to explain orally than write it down, sorry!).

Has anyone any comments with regard to Canada Optics please? I have tried the rest, including the South, and have heard that Canada Optics is the best of the bunch in the North??

Waddo, RE Canada Optics: nice people, excellent service, they call you (yes, they do...) when your specs are ready. Good choice of frames, your (reading) glasses are ready within two days. Very reasonable prices - unlike a competitor in Girne, where they started to show "design" frames of ca 500 Tl... and were less interested when I asked for less expensive frames. P.S. When you show your BRS membership card they give you 15% (extra) discount!

Mick, I got varifocal, scratch resistant, photo-sensitive lenses in Italian designer frames from Canada Optical for £250 - and what's more, when I SAT ON THEM (I really did think that I'd totally destroyed them!) they set to with a smile on their faces and fixed them for NO CHARGE. You get what you pay for (well, not always in TRNC! ) Keith.

Canada Optics were great for me. I did not need a new prescription, but my glasses fell off and the frames smashed on the floor. First they tried to fix the frames when that didnt work, they suggested that my lenses (very expensive from uk) could be fitted into another frame, i agreed and bingo they did that for me. I was very impressed with them when they offered me a 50% discount for the new frames and did not charge me for cutting my lenses to fit. They are truly fantastic. Julia

RE msg 9, keithcaley: (...) p.s. DC - why didn't you tell me that BEFORE I bought the bloody glasses? (...) => Oh, irony..! Errm, Keith, I always check websites before I buy... Several restaurants (and other businesses) give you a 15% discount also on the total bill when you show your BRS etc... => http://www.brstrnc.com/ (main page) or => http://www.brstrnc.com/BRS%20Discounts%20Page.htm (list of businesses with BRS discounts). P.S. Teaser for non-members: one good meal and you've made good your ten Sterling year membership... Or glasses... "Associated" members only pay 9 Sterling per year.

Scoobydoo. It`a funny you say the Eye Clinic Lady did not even notice your husband had cataracts. She is known for telling everybody they HAVE cataracts (including me) when they have not in order for her to operate at 800gbp per eye. DC I am going to try the Dr at Celiker hospital, as I do believe he is genuine. Canada Optics. I`ve had two sets of glasses from them and binned both of them (300gbp a time).

DC. I could not get the first pair to fit properly and the vision was not correct (I have varifocals). After about 6 visits I gave up. At the same time I had some designer prescription sunglasses and the right lens split and broke away from the frame. They eventually replaced it but both lenses were very loose at the bridge and have started to split again (rimless). I have lived in TRNC for nearly 7 years now and have never found anyone to provide me with specs I am happy with. The last lot I had from Akay, they mirrored the prescription.!!!
