As a closet buddist, i usually have qualms about killing things, this is not applying in any shape or form to sandflys!

Does anybody have any suggestions on deterrants, exterminators etc..

Hi Chris

Many suggestions have been given in the past such as eating vitamin B (Marmite), spraying anything that contains DEET or the Avon Skin So Soft (both pink and blue bottles have been suggested).

I got bitten really badly one year and suffered with severe headache and total lethargic for about 3 weeks. After that I've never been bothered by them again. I did read somewhere that once bitten you then become immune to them.

Why not try an ultrasonic repeller, I am going to try them when my villa is finished. They are meant to get rid of rodents as well as insects including flies, and mossies

Yes we should get together to compare bites! Perhaps we should organise a night out because I think there are a few of us in Hertfordshire/Bedfordshire/Northamptonshire!

I take garlic tablets about three weeks before coming over to Bogaz, I did have one or two bites last September, but usaually I am eaten alive. So they must do some good.

I have just started taken them again this week as we are over for two weeks from 30th April .I don't know if they fend off sandflies though, but ok for mozzies.

I'm surprised these sand flies need to go after anyone else as I thought they all totally fed them selves up on me! I have been told its due to blood types. Anyone else heard of that?

We are over in a few weeks time so I have started on garlic tablets, anti histamine and vitamin C tablets. I rattle when I walk now. We have also installed the fine mesh screens throughout, we have the scented candles and I will smother myself in the jungle spray stuff.

When I read all of that I have just typed I start to wonder if I have bought in the wrong place. I have also heard of people being really ill on sand flies and then afterwards they still get bit but without any reaction.

Are the snad flies the same every year or have the last couple of years been worse? All advice appreciated.

We have invested in a couple of solar powered insect zappers for when we come out again in May, hopefully we will be able to sit outside without getting chewed to bits.

Sorry about the zapping thing Chris.

Looking forward to meeting you all, we are over 23rd April till 14th May,if anybody wants to meet up can you reccomend a good watering hole, date and time-ish??

Last year the sandflies were around in August. There are lots of little midgy type flies at the moment, but they don't bite. Mossies don't seem to be here yet.

Since we installed the fly screens we can safely leave the windows open in the bedroom at night and haven't, as yet, been bitten. As most of my insect bites seemed to appear during the night I can only assume these do actually work. Well worth the investment.

In My experience fly screens are no deterrent to the sandfly as they are so small and they are usually picked up in sandals etc while out walking they are almost microscopic they are so small and it dosent take em long to make a mess some people only have the bites which look like a rash but others react with a fever type of symptom which can lay the person low for a week or more

The sure fire way is a combination of Garlic capsules and Vitamin B1 tablets. Take them daily 2 weeks before you go - you will not be bitten by sandflies or mozzies - speaking from personal experience here - and I used to get eaten alive !!!

No - fly screens do not keep out sandflies (but last year I had screens that did actually keep them out - it was made of fine plastic mesh with hardly any holes in at all and yes my house was sandfly free it was pure heaven. However once the winter came the wind blew out the plastic mesh or the sun made it crumble into thousands of pieces).... so my point is why cant they make the quality fly screens with miniscule holes to keep out sandflies.

We were out in July last year and there were loads of people going down with sandfly fever. The west indies versions are known as "no seeums" as they are so small so I assume these are the same. A couple of people we knew went to the docs and got some sort of shot which reduces the flu-like symptoms and we were told you remain immune for around 7 years.

Deet products were recommended (mainly round the ankles) but we were also advised to use carefully as highly toxic.

Every paradise has it's downside I suppose.

Hi again

It's sounding good. Any day or night would suit me, and I can organise the rest of my week around it - just let me know!

Could I place an Avon order too please? I've been hospitalised twice with the darned things and the memory is such a kind thing that I keep forgetting.

I'm looking forward to seeing everyone soon.

Cheers

Hello everyone,

On the Avon website, there are over 50 skin so soft products. A few referred to as bug guard, from the USA. I do not think you are describing these, so could you be more specific please. Blue bottle? containing what?

Like so many, I suffered the dreaded illness last year.

Hope someone can help. Thankyou.
