Do Beauty contests promote an ideal of female beauty to which, realistically, only a minority of women can aspire?

Furthermore, can this can be harmful to women by encouraging dieting, eating disorders and cosmetic surgery, or simply by making them feel inadequate and ugly?

Jock, I know your feelings on this subject.

I think its fine if not taken too seriously, and I am sure that I read somewhere that contests now ban cosmetic surgery and do not allow girls under a certain weight to compete. I say if you are young and that way enclined - good luck to you!!

i think the whole thing is bad.

last week on tv was a program showing madonna and others how they realy looked in real life.

we were horrified.

now thinking how many kids grow up wanting to look like their idols and be like them, giving them false hope.

all this beauty contests and glossy magazine i believe is damageing our kids. its all a fake.

we should be teaching our kids to make the best of what they have and learn to love themselves.

its whats inside that counts!

look at those kids in the usa, sixteenth birthday presents are boob jobs ect. its disgusting.

I agree there is marketing manipulation for gain,... but hasn't it always been that way?

The female figure and beauty have been admired since time immemorial.

Mona Lisa?

Venus?

Aphrodite?

From the Bible even Mary is usually depicted as an attractive slim young Lady.

We now consider these 'Classic' images to be works of Great Art and appreciated worldwide.

Hi Bill

hopefully this will be a light topic !..

Personally, I can't STAND the Beauty pageants for kids, but if a young woman wants to enter - for fun or to hopefully seek a career, why not? ..as long as all laws adhered to..

It's only possibly harmful if contestants take it too seriously. Otherwise it's fun and slightly nonsensical.

If the Cypriots want a beauty contest, why do you want to spoil their entertainment.

Just because some don't like it, isn't a reason for banning anything.
