I think it will cost about 4500stg to dig new well and also you need permission from police or beldiye.

if want one now is the best time to digg

Hi sylvie,

The permission is a thing you must gain yourself,it is not the digger's responsebility.The place to gain that is called "KAYMAKAMLIK".

We were quoted about £3k last year and that included lining the well and digging a 'square bit at the bottom' can't think of the terminology at the mo!! I also think it included the pump but I cannot be 100% sure of that.

scoobydoo,

That sounds reasonable enough.But we also did one for £2100 few weeks ago.

It all depends on the landscape.

If you would like another free on site quote,give us a ring.You never know what you might find out.

sylvie;

That price was for diggind the well and fitting the pump.Just a qiuck job,done in 4 days.

But like I said ,it all depends on the landscape.In this case some of us luckier then the others.

Hector,

You can either employ the geology dept. in Lefkosia to come along with their echo sounders and ground radar or whatever, or you can go for the little old man with two bits of bent wire or a forked twig,

By all accounts the latter is the more reliable option...

Keith.

Nobody knows where to drill,its all guess work.But,the more you do this the more you become familier with the area.ie. Lapta seaside end:you are more likely to find water then upper Lapta,also seaside end,you dont need to dig as deep either.

But none of those above are facts.Thats just how it is.

Lapta Belediye has just dug I think about 250 meters to find the water up at the mountain.Thats because where the source is.The upper you go,the deeper you dig.

corrr blime me,things I have learnt in little time as 2-3 months.

Genius or what????????????????

gates;

Yes I know ,some do go for as far as "no water no charge"

To the point that ,in order to get their money they go as far as putting tanker load of water so that they get "paid".

what about people digging - i have heard about it - and stop the work after a certain number of meters because they say " no water" to get money !!! is it fair - that's why people are searching for professionnal playing the game !

our friend called in the geology dept and they found water no problem.

when a well is dug, do they not charge something for like per meter in dept?

you may find you dig one, it will have water sometimes and not others, depending on the weather the previous winter.

i know a few people who have always had water in their well until this year. is that because local gov is also looking for new water sources ? close by??

re msg 13;

Unfortunatly there are too many 2cowboys"in every game.Which is why ,when we price up a job,we always remmomend to the owner whats best for them.But again, unfortunatly our prices tend to be more expensive than most others out there,which is why they get the initial job(and mess up),then we go clean up and put it right.Which is exactly why,we did more repair jobs thorogh the summer then digging new ones.

But above all that,there is also one more issue;and that is the fact that most recently dug wells are illegal.Which makes a way for "cowboys"to jump in.

What you all need to look for at the end of digging ,if no water is "black clay".Ones you've found that and no water,there is no water.

Yes,good points,government is always looking for new sources,most recent one being in Lapta.And now that they had found the water means that ,wells down below will get less water if they are on same stream.

suffolk,

i think there may be rules on that?

i would be more worried who's toilet system could contaminate your new well.

in the uk we have strick controls on well water but i'm not sure what the trnc rules are.

all new toilet tanks have to be the processing/recyle type in the uk but here i think you can just still dig the old style tanks.

Suffolk,

re msg16;

Yes there is,and the required distance changes from area to area and from the officer to officer you speak to as well.Which I think what in a way forces us towards building one illegaly,because we all want water.

I've been told 80ft-500ft

sylvie,

see message 15 - "What you all need to look for at the end of digging ,if no water is "black clay".Ones you've found that and no water,there is no water."

What he means is that the water always sits on the impermeable clay layer - if you're going to find water, it will be before you hit the clay - the water won't be beneath it! - So, 'you dig until you hit the clay'.

So basically, pot luck as to where to dig. It will cost a lot to drill a well. If you find water, great if not tough. Don't be fooled by the drillers pretending to have found water, they may have just poured some in. If you hit black clay you've missed it. If you find water great but you may be draining someone else's water source. If too many wells (as may be already) then what precious water there is, may be squandered.

Locals have as much respect for their water usage as they do their litter. There must be a / regulations / permission / licensing system but depends on whom you ask or is officially responsible and who has or wants to dig a well. Fair summary?

there is regulation on well, in NC it is very difficult to get permission - you have to satisfy to certain criteres - distance betwen neigbours.....

but besde the fact of gettng the authorisation, a good driller is someone who can garanty his work and water - drilling for nothing is wrong - they should be equiped with pro material so there will sure of the final issue - water -

and in cyprus water shouldn't be wasted by filling pool even with well-water - restrictions should be done beside the fact that some people d not have enough water for domestic use - green lawn is disgusting in summer in such a country - in south of france actually they have a wave of heath and people are not allow to water their garden - they will be fined - the nature ressouce is not endless and it should be everyone concern -

i have read that people are no concern with water and litter - they will have to learn - but thoses having green garden, lawn and pool are not concern either !

Hector;

very good points and summary,except that I;m also local and I recycle almost all my waste water.

slyvie;

Also very good points and thank you for finding out what it takes to have your own well.

BUT;

When it comes to people having pools in their garden(inc.myself),we only bought these houses or had them built with building permissions granted!!

Yes we musnt waste water,yes we dont nesecarely need pools in our garden(as much as it is nice to have one),shouldnt the government be more restricted when giving "building permissions" for swimming pools.

One of my local neighbours just had the second one dug in his garden.He has no pool but about donum of lawn.

We had very hard times in Lapta this summer regarding water,and as much as pools are for summer use only,I did not put water in my pool.

I also applied for well permit,and I also will dig well in my garden when permit granted.Thats all because,we live in a very selfish world.

cont;

I am sick of watching my neighbour watering his lawn when I dont have water to wash or even flush my toilet.

Basicaly,I suppose what I am trying to say is ,BALIK BASTAN KOKAR as we say in Turkish.

As for having the well done by drill or hand:

When done by hand and no water,you can side drill(2 inch diameter)for 30-40 meters at different angles to carry on searching for underground water streams,and the best thing with that is that you can use other local wells as guide.I am no expert at this,but have seen it done with my own eyes.So for me hand digging is the best option,but we are all different.

Good luck to all
