Hi everybody, just wondering if anybody gets homesick? Do you miss old Blighty or does it not really enter your mind? What common things do you miss?

I know it sounds like a silly question but just wondering on peoples thoughts feelings on this?

And for those of you that have lived in NC for years what do you notice when visiting the UK?

Thanks Nunu1

Only been here 9 months but do miss the shopping (can't wait to hit Lakeside in the summer). As for the rain - not missing it at the moment!

I don't generally get homesick (although I do agree with livethedream on the shopping), however being here at Christmas was a somewhat strange this year. We went back to Wales at the beginning of December to do Christmas with family then and leaving the Christmassy stuff behind was a bit of a wrench.

Also, an old school chum of mine was here last weekend and being with someone who still hanging out with my other old friends tugge at the old heartstrings a little too.

hi

hmmmmm thats a hard one what do i miss about the u.k let me think!!!!

do i miss the ever increasing taxes on living, the stabbings the shottings, the diverse amount of people flocking to the u.k to ponse of the government while the tax payer works their whole life for nothing, working from the time they leave school to maintain a level of standard that they can call keeping up with the jones or the fact you have to work min 25 years to pay of a mortgage for a house which you have paid off 10 times over or is it the great british summer

so in a nutshell yes i miss all of that NOT!!!!!!!!!!! LOL

and if most of you guys miss your shoping get on a plane 45mins and you are in istanbul and they have everything that you will find in any lakeside, brent cross, tratford centre and its also a great weekend get away break

warm regards to all of you still stuck in the rat race

Erkan,

You can be really annoying at times.......You have written what I was going to do!

Would like to add I feel sorry for the ladies as they can not shop to keep up with the jone's in over priced shopping malls, that are really places to go and show your shopping bags off in.

When I get back to the UK, all to quick you see all the miserable people that keep themselves to themselves and low life hanging around the main line London stations waiting to beg and rob unsuspecting people. I could turn around and head off again.

This Island (uk) has gone down hill so much in present years. Looking forward to the days when I can spend most or if not all the year in Cyprus where you feel relaxed and amongst people you are friendly with and not afraid of.

Sick of Home...........yep.

Nuff said as I may type too much.

Greetings to one and all.

3 years now and İ miss walking in the forests and watching my dogs swim in the streams. I miss visiting my parents grave and I miss going out dancing with my friends or having a takeaway round their house.

Tiggy - you don't need to feel sorry for me - the only carrier bags you'll see me with are from Primark and Matalan, no way designer!!

Tiggy, I'd buy more stuff here if I could but I find that it can be a) quite expensive b) difficult to find stuff that fits properly (shops here stock clothes designed for very skinny ladies and anything more than a size 14 is difficult to find) and c) quality not too good. All these issues can be alleviated with a once a year trip to George at Asda.

It's nothing to do with keeping up with the Jones's...sometimes - even living somewhere as heavenly as NC - you just have to be practical.

Everybody is trying to take and not give!...........IM sick of it.....just winding things down here...getting house ready to rent.....then get that one way ticket.......that will be strange...but has to be done!

It surprised me that I have never felt home sick for the UK but have for TRNC when visiting the UK. Do hold my hand up to missing the kids and grandsons but a phone call cures the craving. The shopping bit is sorted with a visit to the South.

Hi all, we have been living out here for 5 months now and really love it, I too miss my kids and grandchildren but as Janann says a phone call helps. When we lived in the U.K. all we wanted was to live in Cyprus unfortunately for us we now have to return to the U.K. for several months and already I know I will miss this place an awful lot, but at least reading all the posts on Cyprus 44 will keep me going until we return again in November. So good luck to everybody whether on holiday or moving to N. Cyprus.

Best wishes Lesleyb

Been back in UK for 2 weeks now, been great to see family and friends and do the odd bit of shopping, had forgotten how short tempered people got whilst driving, Surly shop staff and the increased cost of living(cant help converting to YTL), for the 1st time in 3 years, i've actually locked the car, with all the rules and regulations here now, they are no longer living in a democracy but a dictatorship, 6 Days and counting and I'll be home.

i was interrested by all the posts about home sick - i can see that all of you were living in england - i am living in france, middle of ,still working there - we have a house in N C , i love cyprus but today i just can't think staying permanently there - i would like too, because france is getting hard to live in, is it because i am not an insular? - i don't know - the question is still in my mind and i believe the first step today into a country is to know the language first and adaptation is easier - and we, human being alway think that " the happiness is somewhere else" i wish you all the best

After being here 8 months - what do i miss - norra lot !!!

In the winter it was central heating and fitted carpets !!! And family.

In the spring it is the colour Green (its not the same Green here) !! And family.

In the summer it will be -family.

In the Autumn it will be - haloween and bonfire night !! And family.

Telephone calls help but nothing is the same as a cuddle with the little ones and seeing things thru their eyes when you are with them.

BUT overall the pros outweigh the cons !!

Consumer wise there are still items i crave for :

Sainsburies extra creamy horseradish !! Tinned red salmon !! Cadburies fudge bars !! Proper fresh swede !! Decent hairdresser !! Muller light/corner yoghurts !! Pinoit Grigio wine (at affordable price ) !! Blah blah blah

Still wouldn't go back unless we had to - may consider somewhere else but NOT England.

Cleos,

Sadly, I can't help you with most of that but I can let you know of a very good hairdresser. Drop me an email if you'd like the number.

She was the third one I tried here, and she's excellent!

Ps...I got some tinned red salmon in Bells.

agree with kitty some hairdresser are very good but i doubt it will have a magical effect in your home sick - e best solution for you, if you can afford it, is to go back to your country when you feel home sick and come back when you miss the beautiful weather of cyprus - maybe, work is a solution !!! if possible of course - i am actually tired of fce so i will go for 2 weeks and come back to my beloved children

May be i gave wrong impression - love being here BUT do miss some things about UK - mostly family. Hopefully we will be here for long time yet - but if circumstances change (eg Interest rates !) then we will probably consider somewhere else but not UK !!

sylvie - thanks - have been managing to go back whenever the need ! gets too much - work - well bit of a prob if no work visa and do not want to work Full Time ! - p/t would be great ! Lots of visits this year from G/kids thanks to Pegasus free flights (well 80 quid taxes ). Hey Ho . Missing family but still in Cyprus and Luvvin It

Kitty1

Will email you re hairdresser ( i am also in Cataloy - i am not too far from you i think ). TTFN x

Hi peachy - you sound really unhappy, have you been back to see 'if the grass is greener', what made you leave england in the first place? Hope you find what you're looking for.

hi peachy

i'm a relative newbie to the site. one day i hope to book a one way ticket (with hubby of course) and come out tho i know that there will be things I miss. The obvious things...

However,,, if it helps a bit...

In Hartlepool it is raining. The view from the window is rape seed fields starting to turn bright yellow. But nonetheless, it is raining. Sainsbury's round the corner and I could go and get the weekly shop in - but i'd rather have a kebab on the road out from kyrenia! yep - its still raining and this is real WET rain! Garden is sodden and the washing's on an airer. Gordon Brown is on the telly and Eastenders is as bad as it ever was.

I'm over on Monday. Will see if i can bring some Warbutons through customs!

Keep ya chin up - I really hope things settle for you. x

Got the impression you are not happy in Cyprus and seem to be stuck here and cant go home. İs it true. I agree its extremely difficult being a woman on her own in this small minded place. Keep your chin up.

hi guys

i sympathise with all you who miss the u.k too!!!!

the thing is a lot of people get the wrong impression coming over for a couple of weeks holiday is very diffrent to living out here, and it can be pretty hard for people to settle its not all about sea,sun and good living sometimes its just the little things that count, and living here does not mean you have stresses and strains you do but it diffrent streeses and strains, like in the u.k you have stresses in paying your bills keeping up with the mortgage repayments and everything is centrerd around money strains, living abroad its all about settling in and i agree its hard for women living in a mans world like cyprus indepandce is not the same like in the u.k jobs are hard to find and dont pay well, you could go down that road by getting involved with the expat scene (which i dont really like) very clicky and can be quite bitchey at times or you turn into a alcaholic!!! (not every one before they have a go)

then if you got kids trying to settle them into a strange place away from their friends and family and for them to speak another language its hard but trust me kids adapt very easily and better than us adults!!!!

even thou cyprus is a lovely place to live and the people here are the best you will meet think hard and long in what you are doing cos its not for everyone espeacially for the young and middle aged no offence to the mature people on here, at the end of the day friends come and go and family are only a phone call away and a few hours away by plane you can go and see them or then can come and see you whenever you or they want!!!!

take care all and i hope all your expectations get answered one way or the other

warm regards

ukturk

p.s i dont miss nothing that has to do with the u.k not even family only joknig

i could not get rid of them even if i tried cos they get their cheap holidays and i get my u.k products that i cant get hold off for free!!!! lol

Hello Peachy,

Sorry t ohear about your home sickness. Devon is a lovely place and you should go back and see if it what you really want. Not everyone can make the move

I'm from London where a lot of it is horrible now, I feel like a stranger in my home town. Looking forward to the day that I can spend much of the year in Cyprus.
