There are only 2 good days with a boat or so I'm told by those who have been there & done it. The day you buy it & the day you sell. I'm sure you know this but check out insurance, maintenance & mooring costs & not with the person who is selling the boat. Not cheap.

What kind of boat are you looking for - sail boat, power boat, speedboat? Several in the For Sale section of the board. Also try down at Delta Marina Girne.

mess 3 - Wise words Hector - as an ex boat owner myself, i couldn't agree more.......

Would have thought the market for selling over here was quite small too.

re message 3 - as a former power boat owner I could not agree more however does the same comment also ring true for sail boats? Are there any former sail boat owners who could comment or even current owners who are prepared to give an unbiased opinion?

As a rough guide you should budget about 10% of the value of your boat per year for maintenance, insurance and mooring.

The problem here in the TRNC is the lack of mooring facilities that may or may not be improved soon depending who you talk to.

Owning a boat opens a whole new dimension to living in Cyprus

a. its a lot cooler on the water.

b. You have a choice of anchorages albeit most only suitable for day stops or in settled weather.

c. Within 8 Hours you can be a Turkey with the whole of the Aegean coast available to you.

d. And finally there is nothing better than messing around on boats.

Msg 3 put the ring round it - hope you're even tempered and have deep pockets. Firstly, before buying, try 'virtually owning' a boat in Cyprus: Stand under the cold shower ripping up wads of £100 notes...

Power boat owning here is not cheap as there is no equivalent to Red Diesel here.

Definition of a boat: A hole in the water, into which you pour money.

Don't listen to all the doomsayers - the sea is one of the few places left that feels free, quiet, clean and uncrowded.

It's not cheap, but then again drinking and smoking isn't either.

Moorings are few and expensive in the TRNC, and I thought the slipway charges at Sunset were extortionate.

Also, there are few marinas or harbours that you can visit. Have a chat with Hippo, he's the man on this subject.

MVP: As you list your location as 'UK' - how would you know?

The '9 day wonder' of owning a boat in Cyprus soon palls, according to most who've had this rip-off experience.

Owning a boat in any country is a 'horses for courses' situation - be aware, very aware!

Vaughan,

I also liked Richard Branson's definition of Power Boat Racing: -

"It's like standing in a cold shower, tearing up ten pound notes" - probably be 50 pound notes nowadays...

Tenakoutou,

If you would like to apply a little diligence in reading past threads on this and other Forums, you would realise that MPV has a house here, and has been a regular visitor for many years.

I will add a caveat to that - unfortunately TRNC Villa Owners Forum, at one time an unparalleled source of information, lost all its past data in a DDOS attack. (Due to said MVP not backing up the data!! - silly boy )

Tenakoutou,

Sorry, I've fallen into my own trap - I never read your msg 10 before posting

I wasn't copying - Honest!

exits, quietly, stage left, trying not to attract any more attention....

I don't know what part of my post has upset you.

The first half of my post concerns boating in general, the second half is cautionary r.e the TRNC.

Having a boat in the UK, and frequently diving from a RIB in the TRNC, I have some experience of the matter, but as I state, I think Hippo has the most experience of any board member.

Good day to you

You haven't and couldn't 'upset' me, Mark!

I've only got limited experience of boating/diving in Cyprus.

I was a partner in 'Paphos Sponge Divers' for 11 years - we started off underwater photography instruction and dive trips for tourists in Paphos. Prior to that, I was a dive guide and boat handler for 'Aloe Divers', based at the Aloe Hotel and with the watersports franchise for the 5* Cypria Maris Hotel.

I think the best advice for any intending potential boat (whatever category) buyer is to talk to as many past and present boat owners as possible - only then can one be capable of making an informed decision.

Not many boat owners around at the moment as they have all set off this morning for some fun on 3rd Caretta Rally to the Karpaz.

Go on, then, JG - go for the trendiest fizz boat!

I was going to suggest you'd need an auxiliary motor - but of course you won't if you power up with a couple, or triple, 200 horse Mercs/Mariners.

I'm sure you'll have no shortage of people wanting to come water-skiing with you, so make sure you take plenty of booze for them; and afterwards, don't be surprised if they want to come back home with you to wash the salt and sand off themselves in your swimming pool - more booze and maybe food needed. If you're really lucky, they may even offer to help you wash the boat and trailer, flush your outboard(s) and chammy down the boat, but that seldom happens in my experience. Happy boating!

The Marine shop going up to Lefkosa from the main Girne roundabout has a good range in all sizes, sail and motor and is the Yamaha dealer for North Cyprus. We bought our engine from them and the service has been fantastic as they has all the parts in stock. They also have all the bits for fishing and boats, my husband is like a kid in candy shop everytime he goes in there.

'my husband is like a kid in candy shop everytime he goes in there': so am I when I go into Nalder & Biddle, or Bolitho Marine in Nelson!

Nelson, Monaco, Kaiteriteri, Havelock, Picton - the Sounds; that's boating paradise, Angela - oh and up to Lake Rotoiti for some waterskiing and flush the jet or outboard!

Have heard that Harry is selling his 'Floating Palace'. It's the great white whale of a cruiser moored next to the Blue Dolphin. A snip at about 600k.

We have a boat for sale. It is a 7.8 metre cuddy cabin cruiser with 130 hp Yamaha outboard and a trailer. 40 hours on engine.
