There is going to a super performance at the Girne Ampitheatre on Wednesday and Thursday of this week. For those of you that do not know of these works by Carl Orff here is an insight to some of what you might see:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QEllLECo4OM

There was also a very good write up in Saturdays Cyprus Today.

I have posted details on the events listings but would like to add that it would be great if you could find the time to support the efforts that have been put in to get a German Chorus, a Turkish Orchestra and a local childrens choir together for these 2 nights.

Hope you can make it!!

Hi Lilli,

I am sorry you will not be able to make it ....... but I guess someone has to work!!!

It will be a super show, I have only ever seen recordings and love it. I think it was the article in CT that said some of these pieces will be recognised by people who do not normally follow this type of music as they have appeared in adverts.

Our very good friend is organising this and the loops he has had to jump through to get people from the TRNC, Germany and Turkey together is unbelieveable which is why I put this on to try and drum up some support for him and everyone else taking part.

Lanclass,

sorry I didn't see your note.

I am not sure which direction you will be coming from but basically if you turn off the main road by the side of the Girne hospital which is on the road between the court buildings/post office and the new harbour roundabout, you will find the ampitheatre on the coast line, almost next to Ezic restaurant.

I do hope you get there, we had a superb time night last. The music was excellent as was the setting.

THey do provide pads to sit on but if you require a little extra, as they are thin, I would suggest you take your own!

Great timing when it started in tandem with the local mosque spouting out!

Im so pleased you all enjoyed it. Sadly I had to miss it but Guido did manage to go and said how wonderfl it was. He at least rang me on his moby a few times so I could at least listen to my favourite pieces. Well done to all involved. Bring us more of this type of culture please xx

Well, it was certainly a unique experience - one that you would not get in the UK...

Superb setting, with floodlit rocks reflecting back over the sea, idiosyncratic behaviour from the audience (every time there was a slight 'pause' - they clapped!) of course we are talking about an audience who spontaneously break into applause when the pilot manages to land the 'plane on the runway!

Started at 20:00 hrs, people were still arriving at 21:10 and later... - and the Stewards let them in!

I think that you need to understand TRNC life and attitudes to attend a function like this and not get 'wound up' by other people's behaviour - patrons and management talking on the 'phone, kids running about etc. - mind you, I did do my share of 'shushing'!- I'm not THAT perfect

The Orchestra and Chorus did make a very fair stab at Carmina Burana and I thoroughly enjoyed the night, and even started to appreciate the nuances of the locals' behaviour - it's not 'Little England' after all...

Keith,

Very nicely put. Could it be that in the more "civilized" countries people pay a small fortune to attend such events whereas here in TRNC its very cheap and thus all sorts attend. I am just wondering how we can stop such behaviour. Any suggestions?

My lovely keith very well put we used to pay a small fortune to to Glynbourne this Is a start at least.I hope it lasts. Elko my lovely man many of us have been brought up wit it. we used to go to Verona every year so there has to be a starting point and if the had rowdy kids at least they spend thier monies to enjoy whats on offer.its hardo know how they een brook even bringing talent like this here. like i say its a proto type and they may learn not to let children in next time. Or mobiles as they do at every cocert I have been to. glad you enjoyed it xxx

I don't think that you have any right, in someone else's Country to start lecturing them about their behaviour and attitudes to Life, Leisure, Family etc

By the way, the children weren't particularly noisy - and even the BABY didn't make a real lot of noise -I'm not joking!

I think that the gate staff and Stewards would probably benefit from a little training, to increase their awareness of how sound travels - so that they didn't stand around talking to each other or on the 'phone

They could also be instructed to advise patrons (particularly latecomers) to be really, really quiet - something that does not seem to come naturally to Turkish speakers - my neighbours always sound as though they are having a fight, when they are just talking

I am sure that as the general appreciation of live 'artistic' (as opposed to 'pop') performances increases, then so will the conduct of the audiences gradually change.

I understand that the theatre in Shakespeare's time was pretty rowdy...

I must say that the Conductor, and Soloists took the occasional random outbreaks of clapping in the spirit that it was intended - as genuine warm appreciation of the performance - and acknowledged it with an 'ever so slight' inclination of the head... - and the audience did seem to get the hang of it a bit more as the performance progressed

- And at least the boy with the football only sat and held it

Matinee performances for the schools might help to introduce the concert-going experience to the younger generation

I doubt that restricting entry after the 'kick-off' would work - most TC's and Mainland Turks that I know never arrive anywhere on time (Ismet excluded!) so I really don't know what to suggest on that score

In the meantime, if you do go along to one of the performances, I suggest that you just accept it as part of the overall experience - and try to limit the amount of 'shushing' that you do!

Lilli,

I don't know the capacity, but on Thursday night it was about half full - the performers were well outnumbered

Hi Keith

Very well put. We enjoyed the night but we were sat in the centre next to the main aisle so children running up and down most of the night was quite annoying. Also apart from the mobile phone ringing the guy also sat and took the call - it's was just amazing! A lot of effort had gone into staging the performance in a fantastic setting. I hope there will be many more productions, and the price was right too!

A guy next to me said the capacity was 1500
