| Christofias in Syria in bid to stop ferry tours to KKTC Greek Cypriot leader Dimitris Christofias on Monday had a meeting with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad upon his arrival in the Syrian capital for an official two-day visit. No statement was released following the talks between Christofias and Assad. However, ahead of his departure from Nicosia on Sunday, Christofias said he would discuss developments concerning the Cyprus question and ask the help “of a friendly country in the Islamic conference,” in an apparent reference to the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC), which has repeatedly and strongly called for the easing of the isolation of Turkish Cypriots. | The Greek Cypriots ask for a favour from these countries in return for support in EU for them, otherwise they imply that they will oppose them. Its a sort of blackmail which sometimes works. ismet |

Richard I agree and seeing that Turkey was a founder member of the OIC then what ever gave the GC's the idea that they would have any sway with any other members of the aforementioned organisation. 'Egg on face' comes to mind. AJ

aj i have said it before and i,ll say it again ,sometimes you have to move backwards in order to move forwards ,the gc,s keep on the same policy, stance ,angle call it what you like ,that,s the way it will go ,backwards. it,s too much of a bitter pill for the gc,s to swallow ,where as for the tc,s they started moving forward in 74. musin long live the kktc

these miserable blockade tactics are a potentally double-edged sword ...piling legal spoiler on legal spoiler and intrigue upon intrigue they have been quite successful in their narrow sort of way, but have not moved us a milimeter nearer to the single-cyprus objective while members of cyprus 44 twitter irrepressibly about referenda, and wait with bated breath for an "outcome" to the talks programme hammer blows batter the trnc's tourism, trading and social freedoms: some are roc-inspired, but others relate to world events and local problems all this is water off a duck's back to turkey, but there's the obvious danger that legal manoevers will finally fail to deliver the goods: and leave southern cypriots whining even more plaintively than they are now well maybe syria will choose to play the gc game, maybe it won't but make no mistake eventually the isolations and legal chip-chipping will be subverted, because the mills of geopolitics grind exceedingly small

Dear AJ IF this organisation is so "strong"..why have only two members ever attempted to recognise "TRNC"? 1/ TR - who we know about 2/ Pakistan - who voted against the UN Sec. Councils resolutions to decree "TRNC" legally invalid ? The way to get the CY prob sorted is through a settlement - recognised by the UN. Putting it simply.. this is an Islamic club that is talking.. the UN hold the key.. and it is an Orthodox Christian ( nation ( Russia) and a China that have to be convinced - unless the Cypriots can agree. Agree that Christofias is wasting his time re the ferry - but Syria might come under EU pressure - as it seems that the numbers going Syria to Cyprus seem to be, so often, much less than the return trip?!
