In the modern age of apparent equality, women, who are increasingly encouraged to have a career, have children and enjoy marriage, are seen to be successful. However many feel this is bad for children who are then cared for by a childminder, nursery or member of the extended family often grandparents.

Should mothers stay at home to raise their children?

Is there an argument that early childhood is the most formative period of development for a child it is important that a mother has as much time to devote to her children as possible. By choosing to stay at home mothers could ensure that the next generation had the best start in life.

What an ideal world it would be now if mothers were able to stay at home and look after their children. Some are probably still lucky to do this and there will be those who can juggle home life and also go off to work. My mother always worked whilst we were young and it did us no harm and we never brought trouble home although I was always classed as a "streetraker" or the "latchkey kid" and we let ourselves in by the key on a piece of string hanging behind the door. Times were very different then.

Its about values and how you bring your children up whether 2 parents or 1. Fortunately or unfortunately single parents are not going to have any choice due to changes for Income Support. The Government is aiming to get these people back to work if they have children under the age of 16. Anyone with a child under 12 will no longer be eligible for IS and then that age will change to 7 in 2010 and they will have to claim JSA and they wil have to look for work.........cont

.....cont ......so some people will have no choice to stay at home to look after their children. In my experience here where I live whether there are 2 parents or 1 and they are at home, their children are still up to no good.

As a mother who goes out to work full time with two children I feel that I can add to this. My eldest daughter has just got a GCSE grade A in Maths a year early and is top of her class. I feel that time with my children is a case of quality as much as quantity. They are much more likey to happy and well adjusted, I am am happy and well adjusted and my job as well as the children make me that.

Message 5. I partly agree with your last paragraph. I personally feel that leaving a child that young may do some harm - mentally.

I was a childminder in the UK for 23yrs, They were between 3 months onward. i have kept in touch with most of those children and none of them seem to have had any problems. Sometimes both parents need to go out to work because of the high cost of living. I also found that parents spent more time with there children when they were away from their work, maybe because they were not with them 24/7. So,my answer is no,mothers should not need to stay home to raise there children.

There are too many financial pressures to keep most mothers at home. Unless of course if one is financially secure. For those who are, then they have the choice. It's not necessarily then about one's wishes if you don't have enough income to support your family.

Sometimes the choice is about quality of life for one's family. Be poor or work. Eat well or not. Life's choices are not so simple as some think.

Then of course there is governmental pressure. You know. Not enough female politicians, executives, civil servants. This government wants women at work not at home.
