$10,000 is the limit legally allowed to take out of the UK i beleive.

but if you inform customs before your flight and have proof of where the money your taking out of the country came from.ie, letter from bank that you withdrew it,you can take as much a you wish out of the country.

a chap from manchester used to take out 50k 70k 100k regular when he was flying to china, vance miller, the kitchen guy. google his name...it makes for very very interesting reading. quite a colourful geezer!! even i say so myself!

I thought foreign currency control was lifted decades ago (includes Stg).

Currency control has been replaced by money laundering control.

If you get stopped they will question you for anything above £7,000.

Msg 3 Richard you are right. I remember when you were only allowed to take £50 (it was £sd then) from the UK with you to anywhere (your passport was stamped etc.) - that stopped many years ago.

These days there is EU wide money laundering controls €10,000.00 - for all sorts of reasons mainly drugs and prostitution.

There are fewer controls about money transfers but the banks are very careful so as to avoid being caught out.

I have a friend in the uk who is irish, he lives in the uk but works in ireland and commutes every week. He gets stopped all the time and is asked questions to do with money laundering.

It is 10000 euros only when leaving the EEC.

All airports have triplicate forms available if you are taking more than this.

You could therefore bring whatever you want to Larnaca and transfer the risk from a UK airport where a percentage of bags are checked to a crossing point into the north.

Alternatively RBS charge £20 for transferring money to TRNC in 3 days which is of course notified to HMRC.

I was stopped at Stansted a few years ago because I had £10k in my hand luggage when it was searched. Spent ages waiting to be interviewed by Customs and they only just about let me off because I couldn't prove that I had taken the money from my bank that day. Anyway, because I had no idea at the time that there was a limit I asked what the limit was coming the other way and they said they didn't care how much was brought in, only what was taken out.
