This morning 4 KAR rescue centre dogs have been killed and 1 is currently at the vet seriously ill after being poisoned. The dogs were being walked by volunteers/members of the public along the mountain walk routes from the centre. The area is a well known dog walking area. Currently there are still some KAR dogs and members of the public out walking in the areas along the designated routes - hopefully they will all return without further incident. As you can imagine this has been a horrific and distressing experience for staff/volunteers/members of the public alike - it is a truely awful way for an animal to die. Until further notice the Centre will not be allowing dogs to go out for walks - they will remain open to the public (9am -1pm daily) but sadly NOT for walks. Please please whenever you are walking your dogs be extra vigillant.

Lilli As you know KAR had previously campaigned and handed in a signed petition against the sale of poison here. But there was then the change in Gvmt and so far nothing has been done. Yet it seems the feeling amongst us all is overwhelming for the poison to be banned ! KAR are not sure yet of the type/method of poison but the people who were walking the dogs this morning had their children with them. Not all posion needs to be swallowed/eaten to cause harm - it could have been a much worse scenario involving the children who were simply out enjoying taking the dogs for a walk (which they had done before) in the countryside. Now what a horrible distressing memory for them to take away from North Cyprus.

Even if the poison , presumably 'Lanate', was to be banned in TRNC, it can still be purchased in RoC. Indeed, if an EU directive to ban this ghastly poison exists, or that the EU plan to issue one, it is likely to be totally ignored, as has been the case with other banned agricultural chemicals. You are dealing with unscrupulous people, so enforcement of such a ban is almost impossible, as with any banned substance.

the 20fus/Msg3 'KAR are not sure yet of the type/method of poison....' I think it is likely to be either 'Lanate' - (this is laid extensively in RoC, and readily available), or 'Wharferine', normally used to kill rodents. But these poisons have been responsible for killing not only dogs and cats, but every type of feral creature - animals and birds. The 'brave hunters' wonder why they've nothing left to hunt, so, for amusement, some of them shoot their own dogs. Why are Quail, Thrushes, falcons and the 'Griffon' vulture, and goodness knows how many other forms of wildlife are now all but extinct in the wild in Cyprus? What about the poor little foxes and hedgehogs - isn't survival for them difficult enough as it is? Some locals blame it on 'drought' - rational people know full well that extensive and indiscriminate poisoning is the indisputable reason.

why is it all happending in Girne or around girne but not else where in the country that I know of. it is sad to loose any dog regardsless but there are questions to asked before pointing fingures.is it beacuse too many un wanted dogs, is it noise polution. Hunting season over month away things will get tense near the time lot of people with gun dogs will go out for training before the season starts, is it worth speaking to shooting federation see they can help in any way or address the issue? it is difficult issue to tackle.

Serkan/Msg7: Are these ecologically minded, Nature loving, 'he-man hunters' not worried about having their own dogs poisoned when they let them loose? Who can really believe that the 'Shooting Federation' don't already know what is going on, and have known for years, yet done nothing, or said nothing to successive governments? What do Cypriots want to leave as a lasting legacy to their children and grandchildren - a barren wilderness, bereft of any life, except for themselves? Get wise - the remaining fauna and flora of this island are more of a precious asset than some of its people realise. Conservation, on land and in the sea, is what is urgently needed - not a continuation of decimation and destruction. Please note: this posting is not intended to be a criticism - just a caring reminder.

tena, have you ever been out hunting here in the trnc? my hubby goes and he says there is nothing to shoot! its more like a mans day out, male bonding thing. its a great day out for my dog, she loves it. all the men in our village go hunting it is tradition, and i don't know of anyvone of thems dogs ever being poisoned whilst out hunting. the wildlife or lack of it is not just to do with hunting. think about the new villa estates and development and what they have done for the wildlife? probably destroyed more wildlife than any amount of hunters.

Dear Firestarter, I walk, I don't hunt! When I lived in Pafos District, our village was in the main hunting area. Every hunting day, the pellets were bouncing off the roof and walls - eventually there was nothing left to hunt; all wiped out. Then a main road to Troodos was built through this area and hunting banned. Within a couple of years this beautiful area was teeming with wildlife of every description. Does this say something worth taking note of?

| Hunting, poisoning and building are probably the 3 main reasons as to why the fauna is being decimated at an alarming rate...I think folk forget that this island isn't as big as they think, it doesn't take too much of either to cause a fall in wildlife...Tena...i think your other post says it all...thanks for the reminder. | I agree with Tenakoutou. "and so far nothing has been done" just about sums things up in NC government wise. |

fire starter: No, my house is pre '74 Turkish Title (PTP refused) and is 18 years old. As it had been uninhabited for 15 years, I refurbished it from a derelect, shabby shell. I have a large swimming pool, which I emptied last year due to lack of use, and never plan to use again. I can't see the relevance of your line of questioning, as pertains to the subject of this thread, and can only surmise that your prevarication is an attempt to taunt me. It hasn't worked - better luck next time!
