Wanted a tarpaulin to put under my grapevine - to shade the sun & stop all the leaves etc falling in my blow up pool (yes some of us don't have 'real' swimming pools). Shopped around a bit and found some tarp like material at Ilif just west of Girne. He couldn't put eyelets round the edge as he doesn't have the machine so he recommended a place/chap called TutKucan opposite the Green Garden Centre. We took our 'tarp' (which cost around 50tl) to TUTKUCAN and told him we'd been sent by Gurcan @ Ilif who'd recommended him to do the eylets. We were told to come back & collect it on the Monday (this was Sat) Turned up Monday and 'tarp' was sitting outside on forecourt - noticed eyelets & all looked ok - asked how much and nearly fainted when asked fot 100tl !!!!!(we supplied our own eyelets!) What could I do? Made a mental note to always check the price of a job first in future & paid up. cont........there's more!

Part 2

On the way home we stopped at Karoanogulu ('scuse spelling) while Bernie was in bank I got a sudden urge to look in the boot at the expensive 'eyelet job' - then I realised - they'd folded the blinking thing in half and put eyelets all the way round the double material AAAAAAArrrrrrgggggggggghhhhh! Back to TUTKUCUC to complain - they said - "material not strong single - needs to be double" I pointed out that I wanted it a particular size & they had just halved it - lots of shoulder shrugging from them and told to come back Yarin! Returned on Tuesday & Tarpaulin back to original size - eyelets all around edge but also a line of them down the middle where they had cocked up!

Just thought I ought to NAME & SHAME these people who took 100 tl from me for what should have been a ten minute job.....TUTKUCUC! apparently they specialise in awnings & tents etc ha ha ha Next time I'm back in the UK top of my shopping list is an eyelet machinel

Yep, I think you were well & truly had over on that one. Lesson learnt by me there.

Moral = ALWAYS check and agree the price before getting even the smallest of jobs done!

Never ceases to amaze me some of you timid ones. Demand the 100TL plus 50TL for the canvass and the cost of the eyelets. Their mistake to compensate as it's no longer of any use. Cause a stink if they are adamant in not reimbursing you, start knocking/breaking things in the shop and explain it's just an accidental mistake as you lost your balance, not your problem! Tell them to call the Police in a stalemate standoff or you'll do it. It does work!

Yes Brinsley I agree - and in another life I would kick up a stink - but I came here to get away from a stressful life - I want to relax in the sun (or shade sometimes, hence the need for the tarp) not stand arguing the toss in a foreign language with people who really don't care. They will never get any more custom from me and I just wanted to warn other people what a rip off they are - I only lost 100 tl (& the cost of the canvas 50 tl) Imagine if I'd given them a really big job to do. Golden rule for me from now on - Always agree a price first!

I'm more stressed here in retirement then when I was working 16hrs a day, 7 days a week! Win/loose or compromise, the outcome for having tried against rip off merchants is reward in itself!
