Been picking up the odd snippet that hints at a Plan B if the current talks fail. Most here would prefer a Plan B, especially if, as hinted in a speculative article I read, it comes with some international backing and included recognition of sorts (Taiwan model). Certainly the Turkish Foriegn minister talked of the need to examine possible alternatives on his recent one day visit here.

The question is: is this just politics to put pressre on the Greek side to compromise, or IS THERE REALLY A PLAN B being worked on/discussed by those who count.

Does anyone have any real information on this (we all have opinions) or seen any reported specific comments from those who are in a position to know, that might be educational on this question. Our future happiness may in part depend on it !

Will 'Never Never Land' remain in limbo?

The "Plan B" referred to was from an article in Cyprus Star who were following on from reports in the GC press.

Apparently this is a UN move to allow direct trade and travel links with the TRNC should the current unity talks look to not reach agreement by November 2009. The UN would then attempt to facilitate further progress in the talks.

This was described as a "Taiwanisation of Northern Cyprus". The UN will develop the "intervening role" as from October while encouraging the two sides to make progress in the talks.

Direct trade would come about with the help of Islamic Arab countries who would immediately recognise the TRNC. This would provide a leveller playing ground for further unity talks.

Msg 11,that would be Azerbajhan and at least one Africa country currently recognises the TRNC. It is obvious to anyone with an IQ above that of a cheeseplant, that if the current talks breakdown, the situation would be a "watershed". New world recognition from whatever quarters would soon happen and the GC's would just have to settle with their emnity and living in the past!

Msg 21 - a very good article

We all know the talks are going nowhere (well everyone except Talat and Christofias it seems), and the present meetings are just part of the never ending delay tactics of the RoC

These talks are only going on to show good will to the International community. Whoever blinks first and walks away loses. The GC's are already 2-0 down (own goals) with 2004 and the latest Limnitis fiasco and the smart money is on the TC's keeping their cool and letting either the talks wither of their own accord, or wait to see the GC referendum rejection.

Sound reasoning, Vaughan.

But how long before the talks fizzle out?

The 'land dispute', as soon as it is on the agenda, will put the kybosh on the talks - that's for sure!

It's ridiculous that the 'land dispute' wasn't scheduled first - then this charade would be over and done with.

Very true.

I guess they anticipated that they would develop trust as they tackled less demanding issues, thus, when they got to talking about territory, guarantees and property each side would be more willing to compromise.

Seems like sufficient trust has not been developed, the necessary will has not been cultivated and neither party is willing to take the risk of making the large concession necessary to move the talks forward.

Bonjo.... message 11...... Why not read and understand the article. All I posted was a precis. There's much more to this than you think.

Just maybe the UN and EC are tired of the obstacles being put in the way of the talk's progress and wish to even the balance.
