Have been browsing this forum for over a month now and love it! We're coming over in a few weeks time for our 1st holiday in Kyrenia in - wait for it - 35 years!! All place names have changed of course and memories have faded. Staying at Hideaway Club in Edremit. Is that anywhere near Lapta (previously known as Lapithos) ? Can you recommend decent eateries in that area or not too far away ? Also, I was amazed to read that you'd (or most of you!) had just had a thunderstorm & some rain. Beginning of September, too! Generally speaking what are the local temps for first 2 weeks in October? In the 'old days' Summer in Kyrenia wasn't over till end of October. Thanks in advance for any replies.

September is HOT nights are cooler! Hideaway is in Karaoglanoglu, 5-6 miles before lapta.. Just below Karmi village nice place, nice people.. You'll love it... Decent restaurants in the area are Saint Tropez, The Address, Figaro, Missina, Kervan cafe is good for drinks and a snack. All in Karaoglanoglu.

Kyrenia 35 years?????!! You will be shocked to say the least

Swannee.

Hideaway club in Edremit. Nice choice, run by ex-pat family.

For information on eateries and places to go and see, all you have to do go to the reception speek to Guzin.

If you are looking to invest in TRNC ask Gusin to make an appointment for you to see Okan.

Msg 1

Would help if a moderator answered your questions. 1) Edremit on the correct side of Kyrenia for you to get to Lapta. 2) First two weeks in October perfect short wearing, walking climate during the day but maybe a jumper in the evenings. Hope this helps.

Hi swannee7, you have made a great choice staying at the Hideaway, we have stayed there lots of times and we can not praise it enough, the staff are second to none and will make your stay there special. We are over early October and always drop in to say hello.

Lapta is about a 15 minute drive away.

This link will give you a wide choice of restaurants to chose from - http://www.cyprus44.com/forums/restaurants.asp

swannee - welcome to the forum.

Hideaway is a lovely place. You are correct, it is in Edremit, a little way up in the mountains. yrys88 is right, it's about 5 odd miles before Lapta, coming from Girne. The St Tropez is, in fact, in Alsancak, whilst the other restaurants are in Karaoglanoglu. You are not far from some decent beaches, just down onto the main road and there a quite a few to choose from, whether you go East or West. I'm sure you won't be disappointed, but as yrys88 says, you will definitely be shocked! We started visiting almost 20 years ago and have certainly seen some changes.

Weather should still be good, so no need to worry there.

Enjoy your holiday - it would be interesting to see what you made of the place!

Just had another thought! Do the clocks get adjusted in October to mark end of 'Summer Time' as in Europe? Have noted you're currently 2hrs ahead of GMT at the moment.

swannee7.

Edremit is half way between Karaman , formally (karmi,) and Karouglanoglu formally( St Georges), about 6 k from Girne (Kyrenia) and 8 k from Lapta.

Yes the clocks go back/forwards the same as in UK so we are always 2 hours ahead.

Yes, clocks go back on same day as UK.

Actually we are 3 hrs ahead of GMT, and UK is 1 hr ahead of GMT at the moment. I think you mean BST.

The speed of reply is amazing! Thanks to last 2 posts for clarifying in more detail. I can just about remember where Karmi (now Karaman) is but not St.Georges. No worries. One memory that hasn't faded is that of the 'petrified tree' near the top of the original mountain road leading down into Kyrenia. It was the only relic of a prehistoric forest-ed area and had become 'petrified' (turned to stone) over the millenia. Is it still there, does anyone know? Perhaps it got bulldozed when new roads were being blasted out of the landscape......

After 35 years I think (could be wrong) the only drinking/eating establishment you may remember which is still in existence would be the Dome Hotel, central Kyrenia on the coast.

Alongside the Dome metioned by Richard

I know of the Riviera Beach Bungalows. The main building reception /bar / restaurant were well pre 74 as a restaurant only they are in Karanoglu on the beach side not long past the Lemar Supemarket

Ambelia Village just before and above Bellapais is also pre '74 so might be familiar to you

Brinsley - msg. 14. Yes, 'Dome' was THE hotel in the old days. We actually stayed on holiday at the hotel's annexe apartments in '73.

Flightholiday - msg. 16. Deffo don't remember Beach Bungalows but Ambelia Village does ring a bell.

Bonio - msg.l6. Thanks for that info. As Karaoglanoglu is bit of a mouthful to say the least, nice to know that its actually called Ayyorgi/Ayios Yiorgos these days - Greek/Turkish variation of St.George !

Has anyone got any news following on from my msg 13 ? You've all been brilliant and replies are much appreciated. Swannee7
