Has anyone or does anyone know whether it is possible to a drive a car from GB then in by ferry from Turkey for a limited period -say 4-6 weeks as a visiting tourist.Obviously taking it back at the end of the holiday.

Are the costs ,bureaucracy involved prohibitive in such an excercise.

Or does anyone know where I could get official information on such a proposal.

thanks

Should imagine it is ok , had friends that have done this in the past but like everything else needs offically confirming . What would be interesting to know is what is the maximum time the car vehicle can stay as a temporary stay .

Isn't it 3 months?

My friend wasn't sure whether to keep, or take his car (UK Glasses Guide value £1,500 - 2000) out.

Initially, he was quoted £2.5k by the shippers. When presenting himself at Customs, they demanded £8.5k - next time he went, he was told £10k, and the final time £10.5k! Can you believe it.

Although he is entitled to keep his car 3 months (as anywhere in the world), his car was confiscated by Customs after 4 weeks. He arrived home to find them hauling it onto a low-loader truck.

He said he was told to sign some paper in Turkish, which not wanting to aggravate them he did, but later found he'd signed his car over to them. He then had to pay fines for his car being impounded, and so on.

His car was moved to two differently located compounds, and will be auctioned...

Since this all happened, the government has changed.

Will he be informed about the date of the auction and, if so, will he be allowed to bid for his own car?

Alistair

There are costs to everything and some painful ones to do with cars

If you drive outside the EU you need to have insurance at the borders

Serbia 120 euro

Turkey 80 euro

TRNC 240 YTL

RoC 20 euro

These figures are not accurate but near the mark cover only lasts from 2 weeks to a month so you will have to pay the same again on your return journey

Also how do you fancy claiming on your Serbian insurance or Turkish insurance for your damaged car

Ferries are not cheap 120 euro on the boat from hell to Girni

Compare that with the cost of car hire in the TRNC and a cheap flight from London £100 to £200

The choice is yours its cheaper to hire cars in the on route countries and do the sightseeing at your leisure over a period of time

If you have a ressidency stamp on your passport for TRNC they will insist that you are bringing the car permanently to TrNC and you will have to pay all import taxes there and then

I was given 30days when i arrived in May on the ferry from Turkey & told if i needed it extending to go to the customs in Nikosia, they look at the size & class of vehicle, but would only give another 30days due to the size (transit van size).
