Does anyone know the reasons for the lack of sea life here. Is it just fished out or what? Can find nothing but minute winkles no limpets, no anemones and fishing is a usless adventure here. Why no crab, lobster or diversity in the fish for sale? Surely the fish don't avoid this part of the Med?????

Too hot, too salty, too stagnant. What there ever was has long been fished out.

as a pasionate diver I can tell you that you are only able to see fish at the protected diving spots, or by chance when you are snorkiling.. . The med is empty! huge fish trolls from all around the world catch away everything which is not fast enough to escape.. 1000s of seaturtles, dolphins, coralls.. all die in the hunt.. The golden sand beach in karpaz had nearly no nesting turtles this year as we think trolls from turkey and syria have done a great job there by cleaning everything out of the water.. it is very sad.. Greenpeace is acctually trying to set up a protected reserve between TR and CY which would be positive for future sealife.

"Dont eat TUNA fish. If you eat it, your children will never eat it (Melissa, 11 years)"

And this is true. During the hunt for TUNA 1000000s of sea animals die each day.. There are nearly none left in cyprus. so think twice.. (Infos etc) Facebook group, Cyprus Underwater World: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=270121655124

RE msg 3: (...) The golden sand beach in karpaz had nearly no nesting turtles this year (...)

=> Sad. But some good news from a little beach in the Karsiyaka area: 53 nests (or 54) and a couple of thousand turtles helped to "the safety" of the sea. The bad news: I understand that only one out of 1000 young turtles becomes 20 years of age. It looks like another lost battle.

Tuna is the only fish I eat. Having read what you've written above I now refuse to buy anymore. I had no idea of the amount of sea deaths caused by catching this fish. I think there needs to be a huge awareness campaign started, should anyone say that there is, it never reached me.

The Tuna battle is one of the biggest battle going on at the moment. I stoped buyin TUNA 5 years ago.. The situation is at the point where lots of TUNA species are in great danger of extinction. FOREVER!

This is why the EU is thinking about taking the step to ban all kind of trade with Bluefin Tuna. hope this will come true.. here are some news on which fish you should avoid: http://www.greenpeace.org/usa/campaigns/oceans/seafood/red-fish

Petition for marine reserves wordwide (takes 2 min to sign): http://www.greenpeace.org/international/campaigns/oceans/marine-reserves/roadmap-to-recovery

Its the same in the UK, most undersized fish caught in nets are thrown back dead , the same happens if they catch over their quota .

mitsi, I asked the same question in another thread, but nobody seams to know, I just cannot make out why the rocks are black all around the coast, the actual line in roughly the same hight. As you say, no limpets no watersnails, no shrimps. Is it because the minerals are very high in the waters?

Hi ya cyprusairsoft, how ya doing then, lol xx

there is lots of snails and stuff, but as I said, only in the protected dive areas. also, there is some kind of sealife but its very poor on most of the coast line.. maybe try some different place for snorkeling..

I know some places where you see anemones etc, even at the coast, but will not post it here.

shrimps are very rare and mostly seen at night dives.. pictures: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=270121655124

I know that there is also dynamite fishing in the karpaz area.. lots of..

I was told some time ago, that the reason for the lack of life in the sea, is because there is no flow....as in no rivers run into into it, therefore no movement and very little oxygen.

Since the building of the Aswan dam there has been little flow of nutrients into this end of the Med. This partly accounts for the dearth of sealife. We do get however, a few Indian Ocean visitors who have migrated over time through the Suez Canal. You'll also see a fair amount of stuff if you snorkel about 50-100m out, but it's usually pretty small. Re the black rocks - there are very few naturally 'black' rocks outcropping at sea level. Most of the 'black' is oil staining from ships either negligently or purposefully cleaning their tanks near TRNC. Look at Lapta beach and Akdeniz... you can literally peel the stuff off the rocks.

Thanks for the reply Jetski, did wonder about oil staining, but have not seen any oil/tar on shore.

This will get me into trouble! Nothing to do with the rights of the issue in discussion, but why should the European Commission start dictating to none EU members (Msg 18) especially Turkey when Brussels have for many years dictated to Turkey to adjust it's laws to have any chance of joining the Union, at the the same time being berated by the likes of Austria, France, Germany etc. Surely this matter should be dealt with by the UN (inefficient quango organisation as it is)!
