How interesting, leaked UN papers reveal that the GC's are the obstacle to a settlement not Turkey.

"Pascoe is recorded saying to Urbancic that his main concern was that the second round might be as “unsubstantive as the first”. He said the EU had to put pressure on the Greek Cypriots and make it clear that the international community expected a solution this time"

"Urbancic said France’s contributions to the talks were “often unhelpful” while “Germany was virtually inactive”

"he said the rest of Europe broadly aligned itself with the Greek Cypriots"

You are right Musin. There is a distorted bias against Turkey and the TC's.

Someone wiser than I commented today that the main problem is that most of the EU states who support GC's simply do not know the true position.

So, it is up to eveyrone who can to ensure that they do.

Get out the pen and paper!

The article also said the Eastern European EU members would like to help but don't know how.

mark,

an interesting report that has the ring of truth

christophias is a politician naturally concerned about his coalition partners,

who are now threatening to go awol if he strikes out on his own

the other side is said to have informed the un earlier this year

they expected twenty billion euros in compo to sign up to a reunification deal,

but were gently but were firmly reminded

that there are many life-threatening problems around the world to be paid for

whether the gc's can get their act together

and come up with realistic propsals even after a year of meetings, is up to them

and I personally have no "views" on this either way

at least north cyprus can rest assured that its security guarantee is permanent

I didn't know that they had asked for 20 billion pounds. It makes sense to ask for this but it seems that Europe is only politely interested. The article says that the Inernational community expects a solution, yet it seems that few heavy weight countries are willing to break out in a sweat to support the process. Coutries have more pressing issues.

The Cypriots may be on there own and may not have the funds to implement any reunification plans, even if the will existed, which we know is extremely doubtful.

ilovecyprus message 8:

the other lot asked for twenty billion euros, you can't accuse them of being detached from reality

...or then again, perhaps you can

but nobody seems to have spare dosh to chuck around at present, apart from russian investors

as regards the outside world's general commitment to solving the cyprus "problem" I'd say this is

very strong verbally

more limited and circumscribed both legally and administratively

but zilch in terms of accepting any risk to their own troops, wealth, or influence

the ghastly example of british soldiers losing ten killed in afghanistan springs to mind,

in return for just 150 votes of unknown authenticity returned by helmand province

and the hundreds of squaddies murdered by eoka in cyprus during the 1950's,

just proving as it were that cyprus is big enough to screw things up

so partition seems the likely scenario, if indeed I had a personal opinion on this vexed question

So if the "leaked" report is to believed, the UN should have little sympathy for the GC's if the talks fail and should, by rights, finally ease-off on the TC's. Whether this turns out to be the case, remains to be seen.

Perhaps it might be that in the event of a stalemate the UN comes up with a set of proposals under which, if the TC's comply, some of the present isolations could be dropped?

yes tv,

a way to break the impasse is an interim agreement

...where everybody gets something

but would the south be willing? I wonder

they still hope to get all of cyprus one day, bless 'em
