I'm trying to find a way to make my email address unrecognisable for the many mail bots active on the Internet (harvesting mail addresses 24/7 for usual malicious purposes).

Many people nowadays use this as an email address "aname [at] yourisp.com". But this little trick doesn't work anymore: the mail bots translate the [at] or (at) in @.

I may have found something to protect myself and have tested it on a Mac (it works) and now I need someone testing this on a PC. ===> IT'S ABSOLUTELY HARMLESS. <===

Please click this URL and tell me in this thread what happens. Thank you for your cooperation!

Dutch,

Blank screens on both - as if the URL did not work!

Waddo: you're using a Mac - didn't your mail program open?

Hans - best I can explain is that a blank box opens on the first URL and then when you 'allow' a second one opens, already headed up as an e-mail to you.

Hope this makes sense???

Both work Hans.... you just need to open the outlook window and your address is already at the top. But why send messages to yourself? (Don't answer that Hans - we know ;0)

Might be online but can't help, not on a Mac or Windows. Nice idea though.

Thank you for your help!

RE Jetski: (...) But why send messages to yourself? (...)

=> I have this strange habit to give my email address to other people (example: in my web sites) so THEY can send me email... I know, I know, it ain't easy... In October I give an email course again (The Pegasos) - you are very welcome...

Sorry Hans,

I did try and it has something to do with Outlook and the company server doesn't let me play on that so I didn't think you would be interested in my result

Thanks proger1. Very useful info! I hadn't thought about this limitation of my idea. Have to think harder...

Outlook express 6 popped onto my screen straight away, couldn't email you though as I would have all the rigmarole of joining.

RE msg 14, proger1: (...) It is probably fine on a non company system but they have all sorts of blocks on here (...)

=> Hmmm. Unfortunately (in many cyber cases!) there are no or very few blocks that cannot be unblocked... I keep trying and appreciate your cooperation.

The outlook express 6 box came up but wouldn't let me email because after I had put my own email address in, a message then pressed send I then got this: incoming mail (POP3 IMAP or HTTP) ? I really don't know what that means.

The alternative to trying to hide your email address is to use an intelligent spam filter. The link below is a freeware option that I've implemented with very good results on quite a few business networks. It's easy to install and use and learns with your help what you consider to be spam.

There's no perfect solution to spam, as different people have different ideas as to what spam is. If anyone tries thios and has any problems installing or configuring it, give me a shout and i'll be happy to help.

Hans,

Just saw your post.

Doesn't work at all using a proxy - at least not 'defilter.co.uk anyway -

Managed to get on to cyprus44 direct (for once!) and it started my default email program (Yahoo mail) in a new window in 'compose' mode.

The only problem is that it included the 'mail to' bit in the address box, unfortunately this is common to all 'mail to' links with Yahoo mail.

Both of your links worked the same way.

RE msg 21, Lemtich: (...) retrobate (...)

=> Lemtich my fine friend: why do you always use words I have to look up..? And then you seem to spell them wrongly to make my life even more difficult... Google asked: Do you mean "reprobate, 1. A morally unprincipled person. 2. One who is predestined to damnation."? I almost said Yes! but then I found "retrobate" in the urban dictionary: "One who can't, or who refuses to walk the bleeding edge of technology, preferring old, reliable tools." May I choose myself what you meant..?

=> Thanks, AndyR. Not exactly what I'm trying to implement in my web sites, but interesting.

=> msg 23, Keith: Another problem, when proxy servers are used to access one of my web sites! But, I don't give up...

=> But that's exactly what I try to achieve! I want people, who visit one of my web sites and who want to email me, to click on a URL instead of on a regular email address. Mail bots who visit my web site will ignore an URL (dead end anyway) but will harvest a regular email address. This is my fight against the mail bots!!

Hans

Seemed to work ok for me. Your e-mail address appeared in the 'To' box. By the way, I am also working through a proxy server based in Saudi.

Regards

Paul
