Is it me or did Mrs. Alciciglu the spokesperson for Astro supermarket forget to mention that the leading supermarkets in Alsancak were open long before her company decided to open their store. I could swear that the “big 5” Ileli, Starling, Atakara, Starling II and Dolmaci where in business long before the foundations were laid for Astro! To quote Mrs. Alciciglu “if you go to the Alsancak area, you will find 10 big supermarkets, I think that is to many for a small area like that and the government should do something about it” What complete and utter baloney, surely a business plan and SWAT analysis would have deterred the company from opening a branch in the area. The “big 5” do good business and have a loyal customer base, that should be enough to stop anyone considering opening a supermarket in the area. The supermarkets in the area provide their clients with quality products in an ergonomic environment with pleasant staff and service, no competition!

Find Astro too expensive, went to the new store when it opened and walked out because its prices were not in line with the others, thats why nobody uses this super market, the car park is always empty. Tells you some thing when all the others are busy.

Did they not build it in front of a large housing estate and cause the residents no end of problems?

Actually Aslan, as it was being built, Starling was also being built and Fresco was still open. I think it was about the same time Starling (opposite what is now the pork shop) that they both opened. But you're right in your sentiment.

I must admit to never visiting the store in alsancak, but if the one in girne is anything to go buy, I would never have set foot in it anyway. The one in Girne always seems scruffy and dirty to me but then that is just my opinion.
