Have any NCs found it difficult to come back to your native NC, and have you found the ones that stayed here pre 1974, accept you back or do they look upon you that you have made your money and now should be humble.

Spoken with some NCs who were thinking of comming back, as they were taken to GB as children, they are finding that they are getting the cold shoulder, and that where ever they go they are charged more for goods etc?

AND THERE IS YOU ALL THINKING THAT YOU WERE "ALONE".

I have been screaming my head off to tell you this for months now.

When in Rome do as the Romans does. You will have no problem regardless if you are Turkish Cypriot or european.

If you expect the locals to change to your way of life forget it. Why should they?

Dont think any one is asking any one to change, it was a question for the NCs who want to come back to live in their true home land, it seems some do find it a problem, lol

In RoC, returning GC's werecalled 'Charlies' by those that had stayed. Whether from Australia, South Africa, Canada or UK, they all get really hard time, epecially if bureaucracy is involved.

For example, a South African born GC, a friend of mine and a really nice guy and hard worker, parked his car on the frontage of his new cafe, next to the village coffee shop. He got multiple parking tickets - the others didn't!

Brits they dislike - 'Charlies' they despise!

This is what the NCs were saying, its sad because they were children taken to safety by caring parents that had the money to do so. Those left behind it must have been terrible time as they just did not know what was to happen. They cared for their children but did not have the funds to flee.

Its difficult to integrate when all they want to do is be friends to try and fleece you. Its sad but you have to be wary of people when making friends.

Tc's who left are probably looked upon as outsiders which is sad, the same with the Gc's, when we lived there years ago we were told the same by them, those that stayed despised those that fled..all very sad.

littlejohn, why are you wanting to try and belittle what I have to say in any of my posts? if you have a problem with what I write dont answer, simple. We have had this discusion on another thread, people like yourself and our dear DC always ready to pick and be persional, spelling etc, well dont, if you dont like a subject, dont pick on the person pick on the subject, simple. Disagree all you like, good to debate.

The NCs do have a problem comming back, but I did not know if it was wide spread.! it seams it is.

Another reason why members are not comming back is because of the ilks of yourself, xxxx just for you littlejohn.

My family that have moved back to their homeland, have had no probs, have great british, turkish mainland and turkish cypriot neighbours.....

Yes, some think that cause they moved from UK, they have more money and some people try it on with pricing.....

I remember a time when I was visiting and was at the wednesday market in Girne, I asked the price of something, I then sent my father over to ask, then my grandmother..

all 3 prices were different

mine - tourist

dads - UK Turk

nan - turkish cypriot

Didnt buy in the end.....

Those GC's and TC's who were born in Aussie or UK and returned not being able to speak their native languages have the hardest time - especially those poor young girls who are the unwilling victims of 'arranged marriages' and have no idea what they're letting themselves in for.

Heck, this is a big and complicated subject, but I doubt we'll get much information from returned TC's - one can hardly blame them for not wanting to publicise their 'difficulties'!

billyboy1, pleased to hear your story, good to know that some have come back and are happy,

Re pricing, it is difficult for them to realize that the money will eventually flow, but its behind by 35yrs isnt it.

Tenakoutou, hadnt thought of what you have just said, did that happen?

You are right it is a complicated subject, talking to NCs you never really find out all the issues that they delt with or still dealing with, ........

I don't think that arranged marriages are quite the way it happens. I am sure that any TC who has spent time abroad in UK or Australia, etc., would not be comfortable with that.

TV: I could relate some attempted 'arranged marriage' stories (but won't for obvious reasons!) - you're right about OZ & UK GC & TC kid's reluctance!

I think returnee TCs have more in common with expat Brits than the TCs who never left.

I was at a TC friends last year when a London Cyp was moaning that their friend had let slip that they lived in London to the garage where their car was being serviced, as this would push-up the bill

MarkVPiazza.

Sitting next to a British TC on return flight to UK, He was having a villa built and was hoping to move back eventually.

I remarked that he had an advantage with the language over me as he would be taken for a local and therefore would pay what a local would pay all the time . He burst out laughing and said that as soon as he opened his mouth they knew he wasnt local.

Its extremely difficult for returning Cyps, they are not accepted by their own people,as they are considered rich London Cyps, and constantly befriended by Turkish Cyps who want some of their money.Even their own famillies look on them as a 'cash ' dispenser.

And not accepted by the ex-pats either.... who look on them as Turkish Cypriots !!!

Its a no-win situation.

It doesn't help the cause of returning Cypriot Turks from USA, UK, OZ etc. that some lord it up in a gauche, nouveau riche, condescending show off manner!

Thanks Dizzy for starting this thread... You hit the nail right on the head! Although the country itself is lovely, I have to say that all the locals seem to have some chip on their shoulder which I haven't managed to understand fully (and that includes my family). Even though I speak the lingo and have roots in NC, I'm still treated as a tourist so I'm constantly being ripped off where ever I go, I'm always reminded how difficult life is for those who live there and they almost want you to feel sorry for them because their the ones having to pick up the pieces after 1974. In fact, I think they have it easier out there, no one seems to manage a full days work but still gets paid double for it (and a 13/14th month salary), little taxes, council tax is peanuts, laws are just for tourists as everyone else seems to get away with murder. I really feel that the locals have really lost touch of reality and more importantly humanity... I say good luck to them!

Any returned GC or TC, if he's honest, will tell the same story - their accent, whether Greek or Turkish gives them away immediately. The bureaucrats really give them a hard time, especially when they try to establish their own businesses. If they import a motor vehicle they get really socked for duty - the list goes on..........

Well, we have whats called discrimination, thought it went on but am suprised at how its to their own kind, and widely done. If NCs are treated so, it must put a few off to come 'home'. ........lol

Yes, it certainly has put me off... These people have had it easy for too long and they feel that the world owes them something. I think they must be the laziest individuals that walk the planet, they're always looking to get something for nothing and if that doesn't work then why not give nothing for loads (£s). I once stood up for an expat at a bar who was charged 4YTL for his first beer, then the 2nd one he went to buy cost 12YTL. When I confronted the barmen, he told me that I should mind my own business and that he's allowed to charge what he likes his customers and that my beers would be charged at the higher rate too - Why, becuase they believe we're all made of money. It is true what Msg 9 says - these people will worm themselves in to your circle of friends just to get in to your pockets and rob you! You just need to be alert!

TinLondon you are right about some worming there way into a circle of friends, as one business has gone very wrong last year, they had a local chap as friends, who started helping them, then the business was gone, gone to the local chap who wormed all contacts into his pocket! A good warning from you, thankyou.
