I have just come off the phone to my wife who told me that when she went for her residency blood test she had something injected into her left arm before having the blood taken from her right arm.

This is very worrying for me because I have never heard of this before and with her being 6 months peregnant I am highly concerned.

I have heard of times when there is difficulty finding the vein in one arm so the other is chosen but when I suggested this to the wife she assured me that she was given an injection.

Could somebody advise me on this, is it correct and if so what is the purpose of this injection.

Thanks in advance from a distressed husband

Thanks Linda and Sam, the worrying fact was that they did it without mentioning it to my wife until afterward and then we she said she was pregnant they said it's fine.

DD is quite right. It is only a skin test to see if you have any reaction to the TB virus and your wife will need to go back to the clinic in a couple of days for them to measure the reaction. It usually just comes up in a little red bump (as far as I can recall) and they put the measurement (mine was 2mm) on the paper with the results of the blood test.

Would have been nice, if it was explained to the patient in advance

Proger1

i do not wish to alarm you but a TB test does not entail something being injected into your arm!!! especially if into a vien.

The blood test taken when you go for residency one of the things they test for is TB also Hepatitis and I think HIV.

E-mail me all the details if you are still worried.

When i had mine done, i was sitting there nursing my arm from where the blood was taken and a nurse just spiked me in the arm...it was so fast i thought it was maybe a mozzie bite...but then she assured me it was the TB test...

Nursie...when i was a little girl at school, everyone had a TB test, and it was done in a similar manner...except it was done on the wrist...

DD the test you are refering to is called a Tine Test which is a multiple puncture test. The holder has 4 small tines coated in undilated tuberculin. And yes it should be done on the wrist, and you should be able to see the 4 tiny puncture marks if you look very closely.

What worries me is that Progers wife seems to have had an injection of something from a syringe and needle not from 4 small tines.

Alls well that ends well.

I'll try and remember this for when I need to go.
