last night whilst sitting outside under the stars, we watched a jet that had obviously taken off from Ercan climb very very slowly over the mountains (we live in Catalkoy and the planes from Ercan normaly fly over our house in a north/north easterly direction). This plane, once it had cleared the mountains turned sharp right and flew up the coast towards the Karpaz, it then turned inland again. The plane was obviously in some sort of trouble and we wondered whether anyone else had witnessed this incident or had heard any news (the incident took place just before 10pm).

We were sitting outside also last night, in Lapta and we saw a plane flying East and wondered why. This must have been about the same time, but we know nothing either

it could have been pilot training. In the South long before Paphos airport became a busy airport we used to see what we thought were loads of planes taking off and landing a few minutes later, we found out it was training for the pilots to land and take off when the air space wasn't too busy.

Could have been practicing emergency procedures IE..engine failure on take off, which might explain its slow speed,or could have actually been just that, engine failure and he was returning to the airport, but he would have to dump several thousand litres of fuel before he could land.Hope it was just a practice.

just seemed odd, as we spend most evenings during summer on the terrace and obviously see the planes going overhead, but not once have seen a plane behave that way

Orangekazzie - yes, I remember that going on in Paphos - I thought it was Lufthansa, who had some sort of a deal for pilot training.

Timefore..If it was a training flight they do all sorts of things, but not normally so low,The more hazardous trianing normally takes place in flight simulators so if they get it wrong and crash they just press the restart button and try again until they get it right. All pilots not just trainees have to do so many hours in the simulator to keep them up to scratch and if they fail their training they can actually be downgraded and in some cases be grounded for awhile. Most airlines carry out these procedures hence the good safety record most of your major airlines have.

I spoke to my cousin this morning who works for KTHY / CTA and yes she did mention that one of their aircraft developed engine trouble (again!) last night and had to land. She said she wasn't allowed to tell me any more than that!

To my knowledge CTA and Pegasus have a 100% track record, Atlas lost one craft, TA have had more than a few crashes, anymore? Richard

If you're referring to fatalities, Richard, yes I think you're right, but CTA have had their fair share of aircraft faults. Lets hope their luck continues, my cousin has told me a number of horror stories about CTA over the years. If I had to choose, I thunk Pegasus is the safer option (marginally!)

Hi All, I dont know any details about this aircraft sited flying an unsual route....Could be any aircraft/airline reason etc. What I would like to add and say that my experience with flying CTA on 4 occassions has been good. CTA Have been Punctual every single time without fail on take off and landing times literally on the button!!! I have seen many negative Postings about them but would like to Praise Them for good service! With All the Factors that are out of the Airlines control I have to say that CTA have done very well in my opinion/experience. nunu1

The plane would not have had to dump fuel as the main fill up takes place in Turkey. Therefore very little fuel is loaded at Ercan.

newscoop..Would seem logical,if it was a CTA or pegasus flight, but not if it was some Eastern European flight. Did it all turn out OK thats the main thing...

Hector No, they fly slower on OT as it increases their pay time, well, until it stalls and comes to a sudden stop against a mountain top! Richard

Coachie; In 20 years of holidaying and living here I've never seen an eastern european airline at Ercan or Gecitkale and even if there was such a thing they would still be mandated to touch down in Turkey.

Roy Judge Mahon concluding his summing up about Air NZ, "I've never heard such an orchestrated litany of lies" about their court submissions. A very apt quote which applies here with reference to local Advocates! Richard
