I think that alot of people need to try and run a business here then they can comment. 6.5 tl for a kebab is still very cheap compared to alot of places but hey if your in that bracket then I guess you gotta complain.

Tigs makes you wonder. We see restaurants selling sunday lunch for 16 tl and wonder where the hell the can get the beef that . We know what we pay through the summer months for bon filet and the lack of supply. My guess bums on seats for the drink prices xxx

Since all of you living in TRNC,are meant to be here for retirement(early one in some cases(?));

your income would be coming from UK,which you will find ,ia hell of a lot more than one would earn in Cyprus(legaly)

If your income, pension is coming from UK(supposedly),you will also find that;you could at least have 2 kebaps in Cyprus for a price of 1 in UK.

However,if you are still not happy with the way things are in TRNC,my free airport run with one way ticket provided, still stands.

For those of us who eat kebabs in UK (not me, very often, because I don't like them, but would live on the things in NC), yes, kebabs are a lot more expensive here in UK, and not of the same quality. BUT, the point NN was making was that it was a HUGE percentage increase.

And, yorgozlu, surely you have to admit, that it is 'N.C. Thinking' - no/fewer customers = increase prices. Come on now, we've all seen it and, I believe, few of us can understand this way of thinking?

Regards.

As a matter of interest the average price of a kebab in Turkey is 2TL and they are very similar to that sold by Gulen in Girne, and that price included an Ayran!!!!!

The ones we had in Tasucu were, IMHO actually better than Gulen's. In Finike they were on sale at 1.5TL and again were excellent. In Alanya we had a filled pitta bread similar to Kup Kebab opposite Karakum Lemar, again 2TL.

I know it's a different country but........................

Jeannie, I totally agree. I've noticed that too. it applies to flights and hotel rates, almost everything they sell...

Anywhere else in the world the price is driven by demand, i.e if there is a demand than the price goes up.

In NC, they seem to have this get rich quick thinking so if a Kebab shop needs to make £1,000 a week, instead of selling loads of Kebabs at a reduced price to attract more customers (like they do everywhere else in the world), in NC they would rather overcharge a few customers to hit their target. Then it all back-fires and people stop eating Kebabs, the meat goes off, then it's sold cheap again, a mass food poisoning hits the island, and then the Kebab shop goes under! I think all the business need a quick Tesco lesson on stack it high, sell it cheap.

I think the kebabs from Pizzanini next to Tempo in Catalkoy are the best and I am quite happy to pay 6.5tl for one (even though I'm a pensioner). He only makes one doner per day and when it's sold that's it, so you always know it's freshly made the day that you eat it. He uses a special blend of spices which he keeps a secret and the cost includes a carton of ayran. Still good value for a quick lunch!

national wage in Turkey=600 tl per month

national wage in TRNC=1260 tl per month

minimum wage in UK=not sure but got to be around £6 per hour

Work it out for yourself

and Jeannie,

You are correct. At least in Cyprus you get "meat"with your kebap,in which acording to living standarts,it is much more expensive than UK.

PS.

Any one bothered to enquire how much the workers earn in Turkey.

It would certainly give you better idea "why",things are much cheaper there.

With no kids,I wouldnt think twice to go and live there, providing I dont have to work.

Living and visiting a place are two different things, specialy if you are there for holiday purpose.

I think that works out at about 40 pence probably cost you that in petrol to drive the extra distance to Girne and back. There could be a million and one reasons why they have put the price up, it does not deserves a name and shame. Its to easy to have a go at a business on this site I would imagine there just making a living.

I think we are all missing the point wihich Nick is trying to make. Its not the item its the fact that said item has increased by 18% it could be washing powder or fuel it doesn't matter.

In the UK they do the same. Look at the cost of a train fare, no one uses it so they increase the price, similar story with buses (at least in the S.West).

If all the Brits took the advice and left TRNC I wonder who would buy the kebabs then, or use the restaurants, many of them are kept in business by the Ex Pats.

The fact is that operating costs here are at least double those of most parts of Turkey with provisioning in many cases being triple.

Average UK wage (for those lucky enough to still have a job) is just over £32K.

However you look at UK Vs KKTC the KKTC works out better value and better place to live.

That guy in an earlier thread offerring a free ticket home if you are sick (sic) of KKTC won't, I suspect, be having many takers (unless they are on the fiddle and going home (for a visit/family stuff) anyway.

Geoff,

I agree the cost of living here is lower generally and it is a far better place to live but many people here are retired and living on a pension, they do not have the opportunity to increase their income any more. I'm pretty sure they are not living on the bread line but, as in the UK, people have to count their pennies and live within a budget. An 18% rise is a large jump, ok, you don't have to buy a kebab but if that sort of rise was applied to other things then it could become a huge problem for some people.

For people to be told that they can always leave if they are not happy is a cop out to excuse a blatant price hike.

The best kebabs in Cyprus are in Alsancak at Cafe Fast Food - I beleive 7.50 TL for a Döner in a pitta - worth every TL - as we are all aware the price of meat has risen dramatically in the last 18 months - when did he last have a price increase??????? Give the man a break - its only 1 TL.

nurseawful - try telling a lot of us here in the UK (I work for the NHS and Paul works for the Identity and Passport Office) that the average wage is just over 32K.

One of my best friends is a nurse and she would definitely concur that this is not the case.

With the future of of the UKs finantial stability in question due to Gordon and his morons, disposable income will be hit hard, the £ will be taking a beating so expats will feel the pinch. I would suggest local buisiness start to value thier customers with quality goods and fair prices, if not they will be the first to fall when there are less pennies to spend.

yorguzlu,

of cours it is more expensive in uk but you cannot comair 2 different countries - cost of leaving isn't the same - cyprits are not earning as a minimum wage what uk people do !

anyway concurrence again and again why do people complain about prices of one shop - just forget it and go to another one if cheaper !

When I said the average salary (wage) in UK was £32K I was quoting a Labour Govt. spokesman. I am sure it is right, but many public servants don't get anything like that - as one on here in an earlier contribution pointed out Nurses don't (although a Ward Sister gets twice that amount!). Horses for Courses.

On the other hand, if you are in UK and married with say 6 kids, and work-shy, you can get £600 a week with all the various benefits and loopholes; especially those who arrive in UK from the EU.
