Hi helpful members. Can anyone tell me what size generator we would need to run a fridge freezer, television and a couple of lights - in the event of a powere cut?

Thanks x

Yes you will probably get away with a 3KW (3KVA). But make sure the extension lead you use is not left coiled up this will cause inductance which in turn causes heat , which will melt the insulation on the cable.

But the bigger KVA you can get the less harder the genny will have to work I would personaly go for a 6KVA

Good luck

3 KVA should be enough for the stated loads.

Very true but for the wrong reason! A cable heats up which depends on the length, diameter and load. It generates the same heat whether it is coiled up or not but when coiled up all the heat is concentrated in one spot and hence causes the temperature of the cable to rise. The "inductance" of the cable does not change whether it is straight or in a coil because the current that flows in the live wire comes back in the neutral wire and cancels out any magnetism and hence no increase in inductance. Even if there was an increase in inductance (which is not true), it would have caused a drop in voltage but would not generate any extra heat due to increased inductance unless the coil is wound round some iron.

Sorry about that, I could not resist it

That explanation to the uninitiated, sounds like some story coming out of the mouth of an Advocate!

1kw will do it.. assume: 300W fridge/freezer - (startup maybe 600W for a few secs), a TV will be rough 300W so 400W left for the lights... as the small and cheap gennys do not run on lower rpm, they will not adopt to load changes.. they run and produce in full.. so you you will only save fuel with a smaller genny.. go as small as you can.. but if you want to extend, you need a bigger one.. anything between 1kW and 6kW will do.. deppends now on what you need/want ?? good luck..

ismet; top explained! now I know...

Get as big a genny as you feel you can afford. Avoid small diesel models as these are v.noisy.
