Need some advice please

i feel i have the worst breaks on the island as they squeak or should i say squeal EVERY time i put the foot on the pedal. have had new break pads fitted but alas 2 days later and same old same old noise.

Can i squirt something like WD40 on the wheel or wash down daily with water.....feel my late night arrivals back home may be getting on my neighbours nerves as for sure they must be woken up by the deafening sound. Not to mention my embarrasement when in a trafffic queue and every stop.......squeakkkkkk

Any suggestions please?

Hi, My breaks do this a lot, with mine it is due to driving on gravel, one of the little stones gets caught in (I think) the brake disk somewhere, what a noise it makes too.

The stones eventually grind down.

UK - we have come across this on a couple of different cars and it was due to the brake pads being made from a different material and possibly the shape of them not being 100% either.

Maybe that\'s it

if they changed like for like on old pads (when the brakes also squeaked) then maybe thats why they still squeak?

its a Suzuki Aerio, do they have their \"own\" make of pads?

The person who changed your pads didnt put enough paste on them between the caliper and the back of the pad, if they put any on at all..still check for mice thou..

It's 'brakes' not breaks no wonder they squeal. Best have brake discs checked to check not warped.

Its more likely to be the dust off your pads accumulating in the gap,or some grit trapped in there.normally a good clean out with a jet wash or good hose cures the problem.Who ever changed your pads sounds as if he used cheap chinese imports..They only last about 6 months,so keep an eye on them for wear...

You got it in one Coachie, dust is the most common issue if we are talking about brake drums and shoes but it would be very unlikely in a disc and pad set up.

The copper slip or alternative type of brake grease would probably help but there is also a fairly good chance that whoever installed your last set of pads either forgot to install or incorrectly installed the anti-vibration clip that should be applying constant spring pressure to the brake pad outer edge to keep it constantly engaged. If the pad is not securely installed it will allow high resonance vibration when the brakes are applied also known as a very loud squeak.

I suggest you take it to a garage and ask them to install clips if they are missing or replace them with new anyway and ensure that they use the copperslip.

Hope it fixes the problem, Paul

Proger1 that sounds more like it

not only is there a high squeak, squeal there is also a grinding vibrating noise that if i didnt know the brake pads had been changed i would have thought needed doing. Seriously the noise is so bad that i darent drive too fast for fear of having to do an emergency stop and everything fails me!

Definitely back to the garage tomorrow!

A big thank you to you all

more to the point DID they fit new ones. sounds as if the old ones were put back in and are down to the rivets.

As a couple of posters have already said, the squeaking is generally caused when the brake piston (in the caliper) makes contact with the back of the pad. Sometimes there is a metal 'shim' that fits between the back of the pad and the caliper/piston.

Remove the pads, clean out and check they've been fitted correctly and then smear some copperslip or copperease on the back of the pad (or shim if fitted) That should do the trick.

Try applying the handbrake when driving along the road, and see if the brakes make the same noice,if so it will be the rear axle with the problem.

Hi mate,

Thers a couple of right answers above but to give you exact isntructions on what to do read on.

Disc brakes:- there should be a thin metal plate between the back of the brake pads and the caliper pistion. That is supposed to stop the noise but it may be missing if someone left it out last brake change. Ideally use CopperSlip but at £25/tin you may prefer a "thick" grease. Just a "small" bit between the pistion and back of the pad will stop it. Thats where the sqeak is coming from.

Drum brakes:- The half moon metal base of the brake shoe (directly under the friction lining) is touching the back plate. Pull the shoes forward or remove them to see the area of touching. A "tiny" bit of thick grease on that spot only wil fix it.

Take care not to get grease on the friction linings.

TY rigsby i tried this

a different squeak could be heard!

but only when hand brake applied

what i did notice is now the normal brakes do not squeak all the time actually only when i really press the pedal

What does that mean if anything?

still i am pleased with the result!!

as sitting in traffic i am not as noisy as i was

car into the garage on Tuesday wonder what they will say?

brakes need to be stripped and copper slip grease applied to the rear of the pads, then brakes re-assembled...

That should do the trick...
