1. An ambulance in Lapta is very recent and I am sure quite expensive to run - maybe board members who either live full time, holidays or part time in Lapta could start a fund to help keep one there?

2. For those of us who are not here to sign a pettition if we show our interest on this thread maybe IngridL or another resident who is on this board could print off our "signatures" and add it to one of the petitions?

Ingrid,

Well done. To follow on from flightholiday's suggestion how about having a bank of volunteer (unpaid) Ambulance drivers thus keeping down the cost, the only real overhead would be a nurse or paramedic on board.

A big THANK YOU to all of you for your support!

I think a voluntary ambulance service is a very good idea IF we can't have our ambulance back, but for now I want everyone to concentrate on getting it back.

I will collect the petitions from the various locations on the 18th (which is a Sunday) and the 19th of October, but won't present them until the following week (26th-30th).

If you are unable to sign the petition, please e-mail your full name to ingrid.lindh@hotmail.com and I will sign for you.

The petition can now be found at these additional locations:

Green Valley Restaurant - Alsancak

The DVD Shop - Alsancak

Varış Pharmacy - Alsancak

D. Kavaklı Market - Lapta

I am surprised no one from Esentepe has contacted me yet. If anyone from Esentepe is interested in doing what I am doing in Lapta don't hesitate to e-mail me and I will supply you with the petition and any information you may need.

Keep signing!

As one of the fund raising committee for The Emergency Services Branch (the 112's) and a resident of Lapta, I do find the suggestion that the residents of Lapta should donate money to keep their ambulance a little odd. The Emergency Service Branch have an on-going commitment to raise money for the emergency services, in particular the ambulance service and it is by their efforts that the 25 ambulances that we now have are fully equipped to EU standards. The money raised is 'donated' by the community, in particular the ex-pat community and it is by their efforts that we have also been able to purchase a defribrilator for Girne Hospital costing over five thousand pounds and which has already saved at least 15 lives. Without the ambulance stationed in Lapta, anybody living west of Girne and Lapta would have to wait considerably longer for an emergency ambulance - this ambulance is not only for the residents of Lapta. Well done Ingrid, let's do all we can to get our ambulance back.

Re Msg #11: If the petition is successful, the Lapta ambulance is likely to be sourced from somewhere else, who then will be without one! You might be uncovering a can of worms with this one from my experience of the KKTC.

Geoff,

I hear you don't seem to know the background to the petition. Let me explain. There was an ambulance stationed at the Lapta Health Centre up until a few weeks ago when it was withdrawn. This affects not only the people of Lapta but also the people of Alsancak, Karşıyaka, Kayalar, Sadrazamköy etc. totalling some 20 000 people. The nearest ambulance is in Girne (Kyrenia) and can take up to half an hour to arrive at Lapta if the traffic is bad, even longer to some of the villages. Reinstating the ambulance is essential to save lives. I hope it is all a little clearer to you now. If you or anyone else has any questions feel free to contact me.

I always thought that the 112 organisation was committed to providing 'first responders' in outlying villages and also providing de-fib units so that in the event that an ambulance was not available immediately then a 'first responder' could be there to stabilise the situation prior to the ambulance arriving. If they are cutting local ambulance services then the 'first responder' situation needs to be developed to cover for any ambulance service shortcomings.

There are options and people need to get involved and understand the options and help develop them along side the '112' organisation.

I don't have any statistics to uphold my arguement, however during my time in Cyprus the majority of road traffic accidents seem to happen between Alsancak and Camlibel and these accidents are always dealt with by the Girne ambulance service, the travel times to these accidents can in some cases be 10 - 15 minutes which is not the best or ideal response time. In the rural areas of the UK and other EU countries they site a paramedic response team in a location that increases response time and thus saves lives, In the TRNC they could do the same, a garage with communication facilities, rest rooms e.t.c located at say the Lapta/Karsiyaka border with staff on a shift system, If the paramedics only have on or two call outs a week and the quicker response time saves lives then thats good for everyone involved, if they do not get any call outs then road safety and the health of residents must be excellent.

Msg #15, Geoff said, "If the petition is successful, the Lapta ambulance is likely to be sourced from somewhere else, who then will be without one!"

I think someone in Cyprus Today has already covered the way to find the resources to finance the return of the Lapta ambulance. I think it had something to do with coffee drinking Health Ministry civil servants.

I was talking to an Alsancak TC yesterday and they said they were unaware that there had been an ambulance stationed in the area. He said that if there was a serious accident they always drove to the hospital. In fact they did not even know the number to dial for an ambulance! Perhaps this explains why the government are saying that only 1-2 people a month used the service.

Mal - so is what is needed a publicity campaign for the 112 number through the whole of North Cyprus in Turkish as well as the expat's languages?

That might be useful, but what is really needed is for an ambulance to arrive in time to give you any lifesaving treatment you may need. Without this, knowing the 112 number might not be as useful as it used to be when we still had an ambulance in the Lapta area.

First responders are the way to go and I believe that the '112' or 'TKOD' organisation now has enough trained personnel distributed around the villages (to the West of Girne) to be able to make this a viable proposition.

It just needs peoples support to make it happen. It needs a communication system and needs the setting up of a duty rota system. I have every confidence in the people that have so far been trained and I know that those trained so far would throw themselves into the 'first responder' scenario with great gusto. So we have an option to having the ambulance service withdrawn from Lapta. In my honest opinion I would prefer a 'first responder' system than a single ambulance based in Lapta that for what ever reason could be out of service or called out to another village.

Everyone needs to think about this long and hard and realise that if the right systems are put in place then we could end up with a system that is far better than exist's at present.

I have spoken to Ingrid today and no one has emailed her. If you want names adding then please email. I have added smity and Mcsvetit to my list.As AJ states we need this facility. If they cant or will not reinstate it then the first response system is the way forward. please get behind this. We need a system we can rely on xx

The Cornwall and Devon Air Ambulances are almost entirely funded by donations. And altho' they get the odd large donation, most of the money comes from collecting boxes, small events and smaller donations. I've sat and rattled a tin for them myself on quite a few occasions.

With reference to message 28, we are often amazed at how many people do not know the number to ring for an ambulance here. 112 is the international number for an ambulance. We try very hard to put this number into the public mind - all our fund raising events are labelled 'The 112 ......' and the ambulances themselves have 112 emblazoned on them! In the case of the Turkish Cypriots some still hearken back to the days when there were only two ambulances here and one of those was reserved for the President! We now have 25 with response times as good and often better than the UK and equipped to EU standards thanks to the support we receive for our fund raising activities. However, together with our training programmes, it is an on-going task as equipment constantly wears out and has to be replaced. We currently have another 2,000 pounds worth of equipment on its way from the UK, shipped free thanks to the generosity of Dolphin. We are grateful for everyone's suport - it is vital!

Also, we rely on our supporters to pass the word, especially to the Turkish Cypriots who are often not aware of the advances that have been made in the emergency services here. Many will tell you that you cannot get an ambulance and, unfortunately, many people have been more seriously injured after being involved in road traffic accidents by well-meaning people trying to help by moving people and putting them into cars etc., instead of waiting for the qualified people to do their job. The TKOD (The Road Traffic Accidents Prevention Association) spread the word in the Turkish press and TV together with warnings about safe driving etc., but, like anywhere, much of it falls on deaf ears. So spread the word as much as you can to both ex-pats and our hosts in the TRNC.

1 - have you access to a press release I can use for http://www.northcyprusfreepress.com.

2 - have you a website? If not, would you like one for free?

Optimist 34: Unhappily having a number on an ambulance does not mean people will realise why it is there; so maybe you need to say things like "in an emeregency call 112 for a free ambulance" in English and Turkish at least

Mal: The web site - a very good offer I hope that 112 can take you up on it.

Ingrid: I would ask but hope to be over before you hand it in.

You need the support of the local community as well before you succeed. You need as many Turkish Cypriot signatures as possible.

Come on all of you - please make sure you sign this Petition, and get all your friends and neighbours to do the same. Even if they are not in Lapta, just think of the extra strain on Girne which could well affect people living there. All these things have a knock on effect - or put another way, the ripples in the pond are broader than you think at first.

Secondly, it is important because although it has been announced that a day time ambulance will be available from Lapta, there are rumours that it may not as well equipped as all the others - namely that much of the donated material will be removed - which could make the difference of saving or losing a life.

So, help Ingrid, help yourselves and help everyone over this side of North Cyprus, by ensuring that when she presents the petition is has enough signatures to make a dent on the Government's conscience.

Thanks in advance for all the sick people you could be helping with a stroke of the pen and sharing your name and concern.
