I'm working on a major update of my Touristic Roadmap of Northern Cyprus and I would really appreciate serious feedback on the following:

1 : => Do you have any suggestions what you would expect or like to find on this touristic roadmap?

I already consider these additions:

O - All beaches (free and paid for)

O - All or most historic sites (names)

O - Petrol stations (as neutral icons)

O - All speed cameras (small icons)

2 : => And a last question: would you expect to find roads on this map that (probably) will not be finished within a couple of years?

3 : What size would you like the map to be (when available in print): A0, A1, A2 or A3?

4 : Other remarks?

2 yes - making them clear as to the fact they are proposed and the earliest they might be open.

3 A3 and also as two pages A4 that could be printed back to back. The gazette is probably just as important.

Hans

The quality and accessibility of minor roads leading to Historical sites. Last April when showing Mother around the Island I found some roads totally impassable and unable to get to a few sites. Very disappointing but goes to show how interested the Ministry of Tourism is in promoting TRNC!

Would people be interested in "New and old village names of Northern Cyprus" on the map? ((new names are the names assigned to villages after the Peace Operation (intervention) of 1974.))

Yes, especially when cross referencing with guide and history books or even older maps.

If I can use your suggestion in this thread I'll send you the (free) password to download the first draft of my map (huge!) from this web site: http://www.cyprusdownload.nl .

Please go on sending suggestions without making this thread a debate - I'll comment on the suggestions later on in this thread.

Main town Hospitals, Clinics, Churches, KAR & Banks.

2 : yes as long as they're distinguishable from finished roads.

3 : A4. both sides if necessary.

Remark: there are limits to the details that can be put on a roadmap - please realise that some details (some mentioned above) can only be put on a city or village plan.

Now on the map:

New and old village names of Northern Cyprus (new names are the names assigned to villages after the Peace Operation (intervention) of 1974.

Example:

Map : New Name - Old Name

N-2 : Adaçay - Melanarga

Now added to the map: all reservoirs in TRNC (possibly interesting for bird watchers and sports fishermen).

1. Personally I would prefer an A2 size as manageable.

2. I would like to see the locations of Public Toilettes marked on town plans. Unfortunately most of them are hidden away with no signs.

3. I would like to see coordinates grid marked on the map preferably in decimals.

Good luck Hans.

Forget speed cameras,if you stick to the limit you have nothing to worry about, also I dont think there is the need to mark the distances in kilometers between each junction like the map from 4 or 5 years ago.

Reservoirs is a good idea also the state of repair some of the roads, this link may help with the symbols of features,eg caves youth hostel, roads etc.

You should see the portable ones in Moscow and St.Petersburgh, absolutely disgusting. Public Toilettes have improved tremendously in the last few years in TRNC.

And I should have added that if it's to be a book, then I think it should be A4-sized, but if a single map, then a folded A2.

Post offices, large hotels, car parks - not too sure about the size but should be easy to read for those of us who are 'visually challenged'.

If doing town plans it would be very useful to have places where people have to go for officaldom i.e. car tax office, immigration, property tax office, courts, Land Registry. Kibtek, Beledeyse, Muktah offices. Is it possible to include the no PTP area line around army bases?

Detailed directions to all main historical sites. Especially the ones you talk about.

This could be with some info where to park, how far to walk from the car park. Web references to your own sites.

I would also like to see the walks marked. Particularly the ones in the Cyprus Star.

Even though I have your original map, can I now have the password?

Cheers PC.

RE msg 22, Hector: (...) Is it possible to include the no PTP area line around army bases? (...)

=> It would be possible technically, but I know from former experiences that I have to refrain from most military details on a(ny) map. I have to respect that, living in this country.

What about Petrol Stations, Airports, Turtle nesting beaches?

Off thread q's -

How do you arrange a sign post for a road to give direction to a site, do you know Dc?

RE msg 25, janjin: (...) How do you arrange a sign post for a road to give direction to a site, do you know Dc? (...)

=> I'm afraid I don't understand the question completely: do you need a sign post (on a pole, wall etc) with a street name? Then you need to speak to the Belediye.

Or do you want a private sign post with the name of a site or house? Then you can design one yourself or have one designed - there are several shops (in and near Girne - I don't know where your house is) where they can put it behind a one or double layer plastic coating. There are of course nicer (and more expensive) solutions.

Hi Dutch, Great idea

There is a real lack of decent North Cyprus maps.

One suggestion would be to create it within the google maps API framework?

http://code.google.com/apis/maps/ (not for the fainthearted though!)

This would be the most useful way and would allow other people to add layers (KML files) eg, restaurants, historic places, new roads, etc,etc to keep the map current and able the user to only show information that was relevant to them.

Not sure if you can do this at the moment as Google maps seems to think North Cyprus has no roads.

This is an interesting project that you will probably have heard of.. might be able to add to it.

http://www.openstreetmap.org/

Good luck!

Ref message 27.

Surely from what I have seen this project is open to abuse and we all know where that may come from so I think Hans is doing the right thing at the moment.

RE msg 31, David: (...) Hi Hans - are you allowed to put on crossing points for the non existent 'border' and whether vehicle or foot? (...)

=> I accept the Green Line as the TRNC border and don't want to discuss it here. Some crossing points are put on the printed version of my map (1.0) and all are put on the update (1.6) available on line. Vehicles/pedestrians: yes, indicated.

The amount of information and the detail of the information shown on a map are a function of the map scale. In that respect (imo) the size should be not less than A2.

New and old names is definitely a good idea. If you include detailed city maps I'd like to have an index of street names with alphanumeric grid coordinates.

Re Message 29,

Do you mean the openstreetmap.org is open to abuse?

I mean't that people could take the core elements of the map and choose from a multitude of different layer options what they wanted to display. If it used this API it would be infinitely scalable.

Maps have moved on alot recently.

This site allow you to do some pretty incredible stuff.

Have a look at this example http://news.geocommons.com/obamameter (it takes a minute to load)

It allows you to create multi layers of information onto a google map base.

=> Dag Belgische vriend Jurgen!

What about larger family attractions eg water parks, golf course, tennis courts and other sporting facilities? Also, public/private parks such as Green Heights.

Great idea - most maps are now so out of date.

Good luck.

Hi Hans,

I use your original map all the time and it covers all the things that you require on a "country map". For some of the items mentioned people can quite easily go to Google Earth or similar.

What I think most of the above are looking for are "town maps". So perhaps what you need are volounteers to go around and mark up the various detailed items, pass them to yourself or someone with nothing else to do and set the maps out on line. Sorry if I appear some what flippant Hans but is not against yourself, what people do not realise is you do this mapping in your own time and produce the end product with little or no profit for yourself.

Keep the suggestions coming for Hans but please do remember that Hans is one person trying to produce a product for the help of all but at a cost to my ever shrinking Dutch friend.

I spent most of this summer touring all over Northern Cyprus and I would have loved to have had a better map than those I did have. Esp. with new and old place names. Had no problems finding petrol stations anywhere.

A point about speed cameras - last week, travelling from Famagusta to Bogaz, I saw three lots of police cars with the hand held cams (almost every vehicle coming the other way was flashing their headlights - I thought one of my wheels must be falling off!) So location of fixed cams wouldn't help for those, not that I'd need that - I don't speed I like to enjoy my surroundings.

One thing that could be useful for sites of historical interest would be suitability for the elderly, infirm or people with very young children. In Aug I met a couple who drove up to Hilarion but, after a very quick look round the levelish bits, had to come back because they just couldn't manage much of the rest of it. Bellapaise on the other hand is easily managed.

Hans,

A truly superb idea- most maps are practically useless. The only thing that concerns me is the sheer volume of information being suggested for inclusion. Unless there is a hi tec solution, it may be simpler to produce several versions of the map, i.e. a tourist one [detailing beaches, hotels, historic sites etc], a governmental one [covering courts, law offices, hospitals. post offices etc]. i think you get the idea, as too much information on one map will detract from it's usefulness.
