We have found the best solution once you have been bitten is Benadryl cream. It does what it says and is available from pharmacists both in the U.k. and Northern Cyprus.

Hi Paul, Sorry to hear that you are suffering from bites. There has been alot of info on this in the past as many of us suffer at varying degrees. When I first came I was constantly on antibiotics from mossie bites as they became so infected, anyway after 6 years I have my own system which works very nicely. You will get a lot of suggestions on this but this is how I cope: Firstly, you need a mossie net or fly screens. Secondly, I take vit B1 about a month before the biting season starts until the end. Thirdly, I then cover myself with the local anti mossie sprays that have deet in them. It is what the locals use and it's not expensive. Re; sandflies, only last week i was given advice from a member of this forum (and I am very grateful) on this and I now spray the bedroom and screens with cockroach spray every 4-5 days and I am now sleeping like a baby ... no kamikaze sandflies.

Paul. I bet those bites itch like hell. I thought it was only me that got attacked, but the lumps on your back beat anything I've ever experienced. Try drinking more Efes next time. They may still bite, you won't feel the pain!!!

Newlad Vit B is good but has to be taken a month before your visit. Marmite also as it contain Vit B. Me I use Avon skin so soft and so far that works. Irish skin like mine tends to get bitten for some reason. I beleive there are some good products mentionedf. Sandfly are the worst. Try Vit B complex tablets also or sanything with yeast they hate that

Hi, Scoobydoo - glad you tried my (cockroach spray) method. Perhaps you have read my other (multiple!) postings re biting insects. The guy from Hull (Newlad?) - I know Hull well - spent several years living in Swanland. 27 years in Cyprus has taught me a thing or two about this subject, including what lotions to use as 'after-bite' - I make my own. Newlad: you may also need antihistamine tablets - very advisable when bitten as badly as you are.

Boots own Repel spray on insect repellant and Anthisan cream for bites, stings etc. (available in Tesco) works well for us.

Newlad. Same here bitten this time, came back from NC last Saturday by Sunday was covered from head to toe both me and him, most unusual I usually get away without a bite. We stayed with Turkish friends but they didn't have any plug ins so went out to buy one for our bedroom but still got bit. What are the sandflies like, do they hang about the beach or are they anywhere.

message 15, Woodspeckie they are called sandflies because they are the size of a grain of size (fine sand - hard to see) and nowt to do with the beach. That means most screens are of little use, and you don't get to see the little b*stards before they get you. Hope that clears that one up! In the absence of proper cockroach spray, use a tin of Raid or similar (any supermarket, most local market shops) liberally before hitting the sack. Spray around the wall/ceiling, wall/floor and under the bed. Stinks, but it also stops you getting bitten. Some say keeping the fan turning also helps; I use the aircon on 'fan only'.

Best thing we have heard of is Skin So Soft from Avon, have been using it all year and have had no problem, have told all of our friends and they too have been using it. No problems. Just make sure that you use the right type, spray form and not cream. Try it it works.

Hi DC, I can't read the turkish on the cans or bottles but if you look closely you will see deet and it is listed as a percentage. The ones I buy vary but the most common name I go for is something with sinkov in the name and it contains 15% deet which has proved more than enough for me personally to fend off the mosies. They can be bought in most supermarkets ie lemar, erdener's, tempo ...have all stocked them in the past. I have also bought some anti mossie spray in the army shop next to 1001 in Girne, but as I do not venture to Girne often I haven't bought it for a while and can't remember the name but if you do go ,someone will point you in the right direction, they did me and I was grateful.

Newlad from 'ull! I just made a boo-boo! I thought I was replying on your thread, but it turned out to be on Scoobydoo's 'How do you kill sandflies' thread, which is now at the top - so you shouldn't need to search too far! In TRNC (Girne) a good 'after bite' lotion is: Stilex Jel - Topikal Antialerjik/Antipruritik - a 30 g tube is a bit pricey at 10 TL , but works goodo, and you can buy it at the pharmacy opposite Astro Supermarket. With 200+ bites, you need to be asking them for a discount, or if they do a 50 gallon drum of the stuff!

What do sandfly bites look like? I have had small red 'dot' bites that don't really itch but you could join them up dot to dot!! I asked at the chemist and they said oh they are little tiny insects that do that you can't see them, so this time before we came out I tried all the recommended methods - garlic capsules/vit B/marmite/plug in/deet lotion/skins so soft, we also have fly screens fitted - we have just come back - they weren't as bad as when we were out in June but I still can't get rid of them completely. Needless to say Mr MAC gets none says Scots don't give up their blood that easily!! Mrs MAC

Deet doesn't work for us cos you still get bitten before they die. Mosiguard best spray ever and we don't get bitten at all. Don't kn ow if you can buy it here though, brought ours from uk. Vape plug ins are brilliant for the house. Done all of the suggestions and vit B anti histamines etc, no use to us. Wilkinson's in UK sell mosiguard sprays and cream.
