Hi,

We're coming to North Cyprus next weekend for 2 weeks and cannot wait!

Can anyone recommend any great, authentic local restaurants where the locals eat (rather than the usual tourist traps)?

We're staying at The Hideaway Club and Almond Holiday Village, so anywhere in these areas (though we have a hire car so can drive).

Thanks!

Try The Dolphin in Alsancak village. Very good, reasonably priced local food and friendly service.

You wil find the Almond will give you excellent advice as to restaurants etc. Plenty local to them. They provide an excellent meal themselves! Been going there for at least nine years! They have the best steak in the north I have ever eaten. Great family and great place to stay.

When in Famagusta a visit to "Minder" is a must. Great place for local food. They are very near the "Friday Market". You can ask anybody locally or contact me for greater details.

Cenap in Alsancak village, opposite Cafe Fast Food. A great experience and the best Meze on the island in my opinion.

Great Choice at the Hideaway - beautiful hotel and Mus, Lynn, Alf, Oya and Guzin are brilliant hosts.

For the best Turkish Cypriot night out go to Cenaps in alsancak - True Turkish food in a true Turkish Cypriot restaurant, serving lots of hot/cold mezes and kebabs. Most nights they even have 2 guys playing traditional Turkish music. Lots of locals go there as well as many Brits.

Over the road, at Fast food Cafe, you will find the best lamb and chicken Donna on the island (although there are more brits than Cypriots in there nowadays) and then Dolphin comes in a respectable third!!

Enjoy your holiday and definately try Cenaps!!

We had a Meze at Cenap on our last visit and couldn't barely walk out afterwards because we were so full. It just kept coming and it was so beautiful it would have been a sin to leave any.

Tried Dolphin as well and that was very nice. Must try Fast Food on next visit (very soon).

I would recommend;

1) Cenap

2) Ambience

3) Archway

and 'Follow me' in Edremit (very near to Hideaway ) which does the traditional "Kleftiko Kebab"

We went to the Acmeneya restaurant last night and were very disappointed. We arrived at 7.30 p.m. and it was nearly 9 p.m. before we got our meal. They were slow in offering drinks and the menu.

The food when it came was very average. My sister had a kebab and only the chicken was not tough or full of fatty bits. Husband had fillet steak which obviously was not. The salad was a bit of limp letttuce and tomato. We will not be going again. It was quite busy which surprised me, however it is on the flight path from the Riverside so I suppose it is convenient for their customers.

Linda,

I would recommend "Gingko" at the main square within the walled city but it is not strictly "local". In fact it is mostly Italian and French cuisine. Most of the local restaurants are kebap types and mezes, they are almost identical.

Hi,

If you continue up the hill from the Hideaway into Karaman (Karmi) village, you will find Levent restaurant, excellent food, great Sunday Lunch 3 courses for £25. Closed Mondays. Best to book though.
