hi guys

i had received a email from fevzi who is one of the owners and forerunners of the embargoed group, basically its a letter outlinning what they are up to and also the planned demostation convoy planned for next week take a look on what he wrote

As you know I am fronting a human rights group called Embargoed! not sure what you do and what you don’t know about Cyprus. Contrary to Greek Cypriots (GC’s) belief, it is not a problem that started in 1974. When Turkey’s army intervened in 1974, what GC’s fail to mention is that there has been peace on the island since 74 as a result of Turkish Army intervention (Terrorist group EOKA and EOKA-B had been murdering British Army, ethnic cleansing Turkish Cypriots and also murdering left-wing Greek Cypriots and Trade Unionists who were sympathetic to Turkish Cypriots). Ethnic tension and conflict has been particularly bad since the 1950’s – the Republic was formed in 1960 – within three years Turkish Cypriots were cut loose into the international wilderness from the newly formed government as Makarios tried to bring in 12 constitutional changes to deliberately lessen our rights as a group of people – obviously we were never going to accept this.

There are so many significant chapters going back from the 50’s to the current day – the latest positive situation (only this week) was the opening of Ledra St in Nicosia. Our human rights group welcomed this development – but if we all needed reminding as to how difficult it is going to be to reconcile the differences the street was shut again after a only a couple of hours, by the GC side – the reason for the closure – apparently Turkish Cypriots invaded their country (this is actual words used) – what actually happened was that Turkish Cypriot police (two of them) escorted the Turkish Mayor of Nicosia over to the Greek side, as he had been invited for a coffee by the GC Mayor of Nicosia – GC’s are desperately trying to win the PR war and recover the disaster that went with them rejecting the United Nations Annan Plan back in 2004 when Turkish Cyps voted to accept reunification but GC’s didn’t and so they alone was taken into the EU and we have been well and truly f***d since then – EU isn’t happy with Republic of Cyprus (RoC) but bottom line is they have not got the cahoonas to do anything about it – RoC is now officially known within the EU as being the main awkward squad member and this is particular bad given they have only just joined – they veto any aid package or effort to help Turkish Cypriots – EU promised Turkish Cypriots 259 Million Euros aid for accepting the Annan plan – GC’s got into the EU and the first thing they did was veto the decision so it got blocked!!

This is a very serious issue – I have done a major skeleton synopsis of why we need more people to join our campaign – we need more people to join our human rights group – it is only a tenner to join (it used to be £25 – we got some brilliant projects in the pipeline but at the end of the day we are only volunteers and we rely on new members and for generous donations from our more affluent supporters – which luckily we get from time to time. You know all know me very well and what my strong principles are – since joining Embargoed! and becoming their head, I have added a strong anti racism theme to our campaign work. I can’t let this lie – I have received what I regard as threatening letters come to me at my work warning or inferring that the CWU not to get involved – they are scared that the tide is changing and there are now actually people who are not scared to speak out and support Turkish Cypriots. I know from the above it will be obvious, but you may forward this on to family and friends, which I actually want you to do – this is not about GC bashing – far from it. Embargoed! actually are on record as stating that we are just as vehemently against any a

hi guys

this is a news update of the convoy the embargoed they prganised this sunday just gone in london

London, 27 April 2008: Human rights group Embargoed! organised a Go-Slow Convoy through central London today to protest at the continuing isolation of North Cyprus. The demonstration comes on the fourth anniversary of the UN backed Annan Plan referenda for a comprehensive Cyprus settlement, which Turkish Cypriots backed, resulting in promises to end North Cyprus’ isolation. Over 120 protestors in 50 cars decked in black balloons and banners took part in the Convoy, which concluded with a letter being delivered to 10 Downing Street to highlight British Turkish Cypriots’ huge disappointment and frustration that four years on from the promises, not a single embargo has been lifted.

Two convoys for ‘Respect and Equality’ set off at 11am on Sunday 27 April. The starting point for North London was Queensland Road, next to Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium, while protestors gathered by Peckham Mosque in Cobourg Road for the South London convoy. The cars travelled slowly to central London, converging at Blackfriars Bridge an hour later. Demonstrators parked their cars to walk the short distance along the Embankment to 10 Downing Street where a letter was handed in to Prime Minister Gordon Brown as a reminder that Turkish Cypriots have not forgotten the British Government and the EU’s promises to end the embargoes on North Cyprus. The 120 peaceful but boisterous protestors remained opposite Downing Street chanting in the rain, demanding freedom and human rights for Turkish Cypriots.

Embargoed! Chair Fevzi Hussein said, “We are fed up with these broken promises. How long must Turkish Cypriots wait to have their basic human rights restored? We can’t fly, trade or communicate directly with North Cyprus – even friendly football matches are banned! Everything goes through Turkey costing us more time and money.” He continued, “The Turkish Cypriots voted in favour of a settlement. Now the British Government and the EU must deliver on their commitment to end North Cyprus’ isolation”.
