Just wondering whether the cost of car insurance and the high prices due to the euro has curtailed people crossing to shop in the south?

Curtailed anyone going anywhere buying or doing anything without great vigilance and caution world wide! Oh, except if your surname is Gates!

Every country that has the Euro as it's main currency is now too expensive for the rest of us.

Why any holidaymaker choose TRNC in preference to Turkey is beyond me!

A holiday in Turkey is a bargain compared to TRNC and, unless this whole island's 'greed mentality' tones down, Cyprus will end up with only a handful of naive tourists and, of course, those apartment and villa owners who are either 'in for the long haul', or can't sell up due to adverse publicity, but must come to 'check' their properties.

This applies North & South - what Cypriots can't seem to get into their heads is that Cyprus isn't the only 'sunshine holiday' destination.

I have been to Paphos recently and was astounded at the high prices. As for Turkey, I have found it much cheaper than here. A good idea is to go to a 5* all inclusive, lots along Lara beach, Antalya and book through someone like http://www.hotels4u.com. They have some very good deals.

I went to Calis/Fethiye in July and it wasn't cheaper than here apart from the kebab joints and you don't get many of those in the resort areas. A bottle of local gin in the shops was 18TL.

A bottle of Angorra in liquour store in Marmaris 20TL. Don't think the resort areas in Turkey are cheaper than NC. tho much cheaper than any of the Euro zones. As for Southern Cyprus can go to Dom Rep or Mexico from the UK for the same price of AI 4/5*, if that what rocks your boat.

Yes. It's now way too expensive because of the exchange rate and inflationary pressures.

I seldom go now and then only for the variety, pork at Alphamega, Cat food at Orphanides and UK products difficult to obtain here in the TRNC.

No problems with customs at the border, but like to follow a GC car back in just in case (strangely, the customs officers seem to pick on them).

Generally yes, however on certain items still pays to shop on the dark side. Generally Electrical items are still cheaper in the South, as well as meat.

Yes. The South has become tooooooooooooooo expensive. We went to a wedding in Nissi Beach (near Agia Napa) we stayed 3 days in a friends apartment. Just as well, we already had accommodation, as everything was so expensive. Our friends who travelled direct from the UK to the South, said they were averaging £150 per day and although they loved "Cyprus" they wouldn't go back. In the future they are looking at visiting the North. We also will be staying away!

I think joining the EURO has cost the South and they will see a decline in holidaymakers.

if you talk to anyone in the insurance offices as you go through the border and they will tell you that there are fewer and fewer people going over from the north to the south. Insurance used to be £5, it is now 25 Euros. The exchange rate £ to Euro doesn't help at all.

On the grocery shopping front, yes I agree the pork is a good price but other than that, unless there is something that you really must have or need it really isn't worth the cost of going over there. I have done quite a few price comparisons in the supermarkets and so much over here is the same price if not a little cheaper.

Goonerboy, is correct in saying that generally electrical items are cheaper there is also more choice.

It seems to be strange to me that they don't reduce the cost of insurance to drum up more business (someone cynically commented that it's not as if they pay out anything). I couldn't believe that its the same price per month whether you buy one or twelve months insurance. Actually having written that I shouldn't be surprised, it's Cyprus I'm talking about.
