Well the "bubbles" have surpassed themselves.

Why, you may ask? Whilst I and about 50 - 100 million others are watching a football match between Nicosia Apoel and Chelsea, any viewer could not help noticing the next stage in the "Peace Process".

There were at banners running the length of the pitch in all European languages making the following statement:

CYPRUS IS GREEK.

English, French, Italian, German, etc.

These were not hand-written small banners. They were professionally designed, written in foreign languages (obviously for foreign viewers to be able to read). They must have cost a few thousand pounds.

Someone must have organised this.

Someone must have paid for this.

Someone must have approved this.

Once again, the "bubbles" have turned a sporting event into a political one.

I must admit, it's very clever. Their biggest TV audience for decades.

Will Talat, or Turkey make a complaint? Will Apoel be suspended? Will they be fined?

Remember when Talat stood on the podium at the Turkish Grand Prix?

Well, Turkey had to pay a few million pounds in fines.

I think this is big enough for Talat to miss a round of talks.

However, I think no one will complain, nothing will be done, as per usual.

Don't need to worry about any referendum, the "bubbles" will never agree to any solution.

The good news is, as I write this Chelsea are one nil up.

Come on you Blues.

pinkchilli - if there is one certainty in life it is that the Cyprus problem will be resolved before Chelsea win the Premiership...

I am not patisan re football, but when you have a team of 'random' superstars with a core who think they are more powerful than the manger (which they are) then in the words of Vinnie Jones you are 'daffy ducked' mate!

I believe that the Cyprus Problem, as far as the "bubbles" are concerned, started in 1974, just three years after one of your life-long problems.

Was the replay not a resounding victory?

What division are you now competing in?

When I watched CSKA Moscow V Besiktas I noticed several large banners saying "No to Racism" around the edge of the pitch. I then watch the next match in the same competition and see a banner saying "Cyprus is Greek". That sounds very much like racism to me. Is it not time that FIFA got involved and did something positive rather than stopping friendly matches in the TRNC??.

I also noticed last night that there were no Republic of Cyprus flags around the ground, but plenty of Greek flags!!

Shows how prepared they are to discuss a * united* island, I just hope the rest of the world are watching their antics and see them for what they are. Cyprus has never been Greek and never will be.

Yes Cypwine, the main obstacle being that Southern Cyprus want to dominate the island and reduce the Turkish Cypriots to second class citizens, they continually show thier contempt in which ever way they can and seemingly the EU are happy to go along with that.

To use a sporting event for political gains is unacceptable and shows exactly what their stance is on the island of Cyprus.

I've been trying to get hold of clear images of these banners, the SkySports images were fuzzy and official images only show the tops of the banners. Anyone got images for http://www.northcyprusfreepress.com? A lot of interest is being shown in the article on NCFP, about 100 visitors so far this morning. In my eyes, Cyprus is Greek is harking back to the events leading up to the 1974 attempted coup by the Greeks in Cyprus and to ALLOW these banners to be displayed shows elements in the GC government who want to provoke a violent reaction from TCs and from Turkey.

Interesting. I'd have thought that Southern Cypriots might also complain about being labelled "Greek" given they make so much of being a sovereign country.

In the name of Richard the Lionheart I reclaim his property, the island of Cyprus (conquered in May/June 1191), and cede the Northern part to the Cypriot Turks as a sovereign state. All problems solved.

This subject needs a lot more publicity.

I don't mind sending some details if anyone can think of who would be interested in receiving information.

Is it in any of the TC or TR papers? Are any TC's aware of last night?

Will Talat decide he does not want to "rock the boat"? If so, someone should rock his!

Dear Kibsolar,

The fine was haned down by the FIA to the track owners and the TR motor racing association as they had sent a list of who would present the trophies for approval .. at the last minute it was changed and Mr Talat was announced as "the President" of "Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus"

As this is NOT an officially recognised state - ergo the "post/ title " was invalid, too ..

The fine was for changing the agree presenter, with out approval, AND the use of the terminology..

I appreciate you THINK it is similar, but it isn't outside Cyprus... :(

Hope you have also told the above mentioned about the Turkish flags that are draped over Gc schools in the north and about the settlers living in Gc houses plus the expats living in houses on Gc land!!! but then again people with morals already know.

Cyprus is for Cypriots and yes the Tcs were and are even less now a minority on this island.

Before you ban me again AJ!! i quit from this expat forum as i am sick of all the small minded people that frequent it, and hope to god i never meet most of you on here!!!! enjoy your properties and dont forget to save for when compo is due to the legal owners of where you are illegal guests!!!!!!

Maybe it's a EUFA mandate that you can voice your opinion any way you want this year although I think it would be the clubs to blame. Just caught this from another site, nothing to do with Cyprus but it amused me -

It's almost time for Celtic v Rapid Vienna and Fulham v Basle. I'm getting a banner update from Celtic Park: One says "Unforgiven"…. another says "1984-2009 - We still hate Rapid"… and one with the Rapid Vienna badge on it saying "Rapid Vienna - cheats, liars and conmen". Fair to say revenge is thick in the air.

Dear PC

>> in your valued opinion, what, if you were head of UEFA, would you do? Hypothetically, of course. <<

I would know the rules and find out if they've broken one by allowing the "banners" .. *I* feel it is somewhat racist as Cyprus is for CYPRIOTS...!

>>I know you disapprove of last night, but is it being discussed in your "circles"?<<

This IS one of my circles.. ;)

But I'll try to explain! This might "help" ..

http://human-rights-archaeology.blogspot.com/2006/02/cyprus-fieldwork-apoel-ultras.html

Some time ago there was a near riot as a left wing Limas(s)ol team played this "right wing " team and flew a banner saying " 'thanks' for dividing Cyprus" ..

This is a hangover from the 74 coup attempt...

Cyprus politics is VERY complicated..

Dear Tenakoutou

re 57

>>And now we hear they're suing the UK government for not stopping them - because, of course, it wasn't their fault!<<

Well, it wasn't - in the main.. do we blame all Germans / Austrians for Hitler ?

..and Britain DID stir things up between TCs and GCs and COULD have stopped the TR invasion fleet..

ok

let,s not sway too far from pinkchilli,s post ,let,s look at this simply and clearly and not complicate

matters ,as some people are trying too achieve .

the facts are simple ,the first time a high profile game comes along televised for the rest of the world

to view ,and what do we get ............cyprus is greek....................

this and this alone is what is being discussed ,so if anyone can come up with an excuse ,or someone can

exonerate the banners ,please post their views .

otherwise ,do not post .

cypwine

if you are a cypriot like me ,then you and i know that too continue to reach for unification is a pipe dream.

The waving of Greece's national flag at any event by GC's always vastly outnumbers the RoC flags waved - the same at this match.

What does this tell everyone - that they still want 'Enosis' (union with Greece) ?

Who wants unification? - I came to TRNC to get away from the EOKA chanting egoist so & so's!

ANY Cypriot that thinks that all of Cyprus is Greek or tiny part of it will be exclusively Turkish are BOTH delusional.

It's THAT simple...

There won't be "reunification" a la 1960 constitution - and GCs need to realise that.. esp.. APOEL supporters who laud the banner ad..

However, those who think that one part of the island will stay exclusively 'Turkish' are just as naive..

So mmmmmm, there won't be reunification and no part of the island will stay exclusively Turkish. How do you think it will go?

On the front page of 'Cyprus Weekly': RoC's 'Peace Parade', very proudly exhibiting their pathetic arsenal of vehicles and weaponry - all acquired from non EU sources - undoubtedly with EU loan money.

Come on, Bruxelles, now you've heard that Christofias has no intention of agreeing to unification, for goodness sake suspend RoC's EU membership and freeze further loans.

To the UN, the RoC's message is crystal clear - even more so since the 'Cyprus is Greek' banner incident - pull out now!

Why should EU taxpayers keep on funding either UNFICYP, or these intransigent GC bigots?

Let them 'row their own boat'!

Hi Musin

re msg 68

My post in 65 make ( perfect sense) ...a bi-zonal solution of autonomous regions as part of a federated Republic, will not / cannot - forever- exclude any ethnicity from settling.

re 66 tulik... I think the compromise HAS to be along the very lines GCs rejected in 2004 OR ... a change of 'attitude' in practical terms - if not political terms - towards TCs

re 67

I'm sorry, but no matter how many tanks the GCs have- they have NO air cover.. so practically this is all 'show'..

The money [for the latest tanks ] should have been spent on healthcare.. but it is hard to 'explain' to a 'bigot' who was forced from THEIR home - whether they were pro rapprochement- or not not to buy defensive kit when their is an army of a third country - just the t'other side of the green line..

BOTH sides need to cut down..

mark.......

I see you're still spreading your biased opinions on this forum.

I thought you would have joined a GC forum by now......which would make more sense

Canyavuz.

I think Marky has made recent comments that are a lot less biased than they have been.

Some comments are actually pro-TC.

Three of his sentences in post number 69 are negative towards GC's.

I haven't read every article in this weeks Cyprus Star, nor Cyprus Today, but I'm a little dissappointed there was no mention of the banners.

Nothing on the Cyprus Mail's on-line edition either.

Both my emails to UEFA came back with the Delivery Staus Notification: DELAY, then Delivery Staus Notification: FAILURE!
