This is what the article says - THE MED AS IT USED TO BE - North Cyprus is opening up, but still retains its timewarp charm Psst. Do you want to hear about a beautiful corner of the Med that hasnt been concrete over by developers yet? A little-explored coastline that looks much like the Greek Islands 30 years ago, before the bars and clubs arrived? This hidden gem is North Cyprus - home to some of the most natural and picturesque scenery in the Med. It's a place where you will still find deserted beaches fringed by orange groves and flower filled meadows, with not a high rise in sight. Norh Cyprus has spent decades in timewarped isolation after the Turkish army invaded in 1974 in response to a military coup backed by Greece. But the political landscape has been changing since the border crossings opened in 2003, drawing more visitors to the idyllic North Cyprus beaches, the bustling harbour of Kyrenia, the striking Five Finger Mountains and wildly beautiful Karpaz Peninsula. Development has of course begun, but is so far reasonable controlled and has brought improved roads and hotels - an advantage for visitors wanting to explore the many historic sites. In fact, the number of high quality good value places to stay, from small villas to family run boutique hotels to ultra modern five star beachside spa resorts, comes as quite a surprise. Also on the visitor's side is the fact that the Turkish Lira is the currency here, making the cost of living around 30 per cent lower than in the eurozone. This means that you can sit at a table on the quayside of the crescent shaped venetian harbour in Kyrenia and enjoy a sumptuous Turkish feast - an array of meze starters, salad and BBq'd fish or meat - for about £15 per head. And although Turkish is the official language in the North, English is still widely spoken in this former colony, where everybody drives on the left and British plug sockets remain the norm. MED 30 YEARS AGO The traveller will enjoy and enthusiastic welcome from the people of North Cyprus, says Zekiye Yucel of The Discover Collection. They are very friendly and laid back and go out of their way to please guests, as hospitality is an important part of thei culture. Getting there requires a little patience as politics dictates that you have to fly via Turkey, with an hour's touch down before heading on to Ercan Airport. Or fly into Larnaca in the south and join a coach transfer across the border. Either way its take a similar time. Once behind the Green Line you'll find much to see. North Cyprus teems with Gothic abbeys, mosques, Turkish baths and an array of mountain castles, reflecting its long and chequered history. Bellapais, with its picturesque 12th century abbey overlooking the Med, is where Lawrence Durrell wrote Bitter Lemons, a lyrical depiction of life there in the Fifties. St. Hilarion Castle was the summer palace of the crusading kings and is said to be the inspiration for Snow White's castle in the Walt Disney film. And the 14th century Othello Tower at Famagusta has been linked with Shakespear's great play, part of which is set in a seaport in Cyprus. Old Famagusta with its Venetian city walls has a Rheims-like former cathedral thats now a mosque, as well as some Cyrpus best fine sand beaches on its doorstep. And the nearby Roman City of Salamis is a mirror image of Ephesus just over the water in Turkey, with baths, amphitheatre and mosaics but without the crowds. A must for nature lovers is the remove Karpaz Pensilar The "panhandle" of North Cyprus boasts beautiful empty beaches, some 500 wild donkeys and rare Green Caretta turtles that lay their eggs from May to September. North Cyprus also offers exceptional scuba diving and snorkelling in clear azure seas with visibility as far as 40 metres underwater. Other active options are plen

Good article and lots of travel companies mentioned. All news is good news. The interesting thing is that it says Turkey invaded which are not the words normally used. Is it being politically correct for a reason? "North Cyprus has spent decades in timewarped isolation after the Turkish army invaded in 1974 in response to a military coup backed by Greece".

Tiggy they did kind of mention how nice Cypriots were "They are very friendly and laid back and go out of their way to please guests, as hospitality is an important part of thei culture". Said 78 degrees on our outside thermometer today here in Hertfordshire!
