It would appear that checkout girl Fatau Cham from Gambia was chosen to model the F&F range in a magazine was in fact an illegal. She entered UK on a student visa which expired in 2001. She joined Tescos in 2002 as a checkout girl and was choosen from hundreds to front this advertising campaign. She has appealed to stay in uk but was again refused in January this year. Tescos are co operating fully with the UK Border Agency. Just show fame and fortune will find you out

Well the cheek of it and the nerve, knowing full well she was an Illegal Immigrant and making herself public, well that's one who might be caught and shipped back, now for 4 million others

You would think a big organisation like Tesco knowing the girl was not British, would ask to see her passport and do a background check on her.

re msg 1

>>Tescos are co operating fully with the UK Border Agency. <<

Hmm I'll bet.. the fine for employing each "illegal worker" is now up to 10K GBP.

Now you'd THINK with all that revenue, from fines, an employer would be given the CORRECT info if they ring up the UK BA's "employer helpline".. re someone's status/ right to work...!

NO..

They told a potential employer of my step-son- who HAS the right to work - that they didn't know if he had - so to err on the "cautious side" and *refuse* him.... :o

I am a manager for a large company and the first thing i am required to do at a job interview by law is check nationality/elegibility to work in UK. Its not rocket science.

Dear karakum5c

re msg 7

The trouble is the "help" you get - as an employer - is USELESS.. and inaccurate..

i have similar position and cant get passed interview stages without proof of entitlement to work .

also true mmmmmmm that there is now a 10k fine ,however i tend to think this was shutting the door in the uk ,after the horse has bolted .

Hi Kav

re 9

>>however i tend to think this was shutting the door in the uk ,after the horse has bolted <<

I don't agree - it is a HELL of a disincentive to employ possible non EU nationals.. and the EASIEST place to catch illegals..

Many entitled folk don't GET interviews, because of the 'Hassle factor'

I think that at the time of her employment and before the border checks all that was required was a valid ID card Not sure when the UK BORDER AGENCY was set up and I beleive she commenced work in 2001

Dear Lilli

If she entered the UK on a student visa, Tescos would have know their was a limit to the hours she could work and SHOULD have checked to see if her visa had been renewed.

Hi Lilli, re msg 12

before Hans, comments, please accept my apologies for my howlers on the 'spooling' front in msg 12 ( know[n] their[there]

The system sucks.. but by making the employer liable it should improve the detection rate, as competitors will cheerfully dob in rivals who are breaking the law...

but the thing is,shes a hard working girl, pays her taxes, and has been working since she has been here.never once has she pounced of the state.unlike millions of puff smoking morons ,who have been on the dole for years, just so they can get money for drugs.the reason most of us(immigrants) live in trnc is because we are looking for a better life.so leave the girl alone.
