A 13 year old boy in Manchester became the UK's youngest father this week when his 16year old girlfriend gave birth. His father says he is chuffed to bits and his son is very mature for his age and will make a great father!!

Will the UK never learn and start teaching these children about contraception and the dangers of unprotected sexual intercourse as pregnancy can be the least of their worries. There are approx 43000 pregnancies a year to single girls under the age of 18 years. The highest rate in Europe. Also the UK boasts the highest Aborion rate in Europe.

If the parents of these children can't be responsible enough it is time Browns government did something about this!

How can a 13 year old child support himself never mind a baby?

Another sad state Nurse. UK should be ashmed of itself with figures like that. What can the government do. Education should begin at home. What was a 16 year old girl doing with a 13 year old boy.I cant imagine anyone of my grandsons capable of becoming a dad for a very long time xx

In some parts of Scotland ( I don't know about the rest of the UK) sex education starts at a very early age of 6 years with the basics by the time these children are 10 they know most of the facts. My opinion is they are being taught too early and therefore want to experiment with sex.

When I went to school sex education didn't start until we were 14 years old, by that time we had heard enough in the playground to scare us for a long time until we did get the proper facts.

The other thing the UK will have to face in the next 50 years is the fact that there is going to be an awful lot of interbreeding caused by these poor kids not knowing who their fathers are.

Richard you are correct in that one sexual intercourse with a minor in the UK under the age of 16 years is illegal and should be dealt with. In this case however what would be gained by prosecuting the girl?

When I read about this, I was so shocked, but more shocking was the comment from the Boys Father being so over the moon and proud, what in Gods name is he talking about, no one of that age knows anything about bringing up babies, so who is it left to the state.

Message 6. Totally agree, maybe the "proud" grandad will pay for the baby's upkeep rather than the state, but I doubt it somehow...............

In the UK it works like this;

If the boy is over 16 but the girl is under 16, then the boy WILL be charged.

If the girl is over 16 and the boy is under 16, then there is NO case.

Dont ask me why they wont prosecute the girls, because they can be just as fierce as males, especially when they are 16 and the boy is 13!

Its just another f*ck up in the british justice system.

They don't always prosecute. A boy from our village fathered a child to a 13 year old and no action was taken at all.

If the government passed a law that these culprits were all sterilised, then these offences would diminish dramatically.

lol, would be good idea, but if they did that, then everyone will end up getting steralised and population would drop, because nowdays, everyone has sex younger than 16. Getting pregnant is the punishment.

On the sunny side, at least when the child becomes a teenager the father will only just have gone through it so he will understand what all the complaining is about.

My teenager is driving me insane at the moment, life is terrible, nothing is good enough, nobody loves them and I am the worst father ever.

And the joy of the whole thing is I will get to do it all again in about 13 years, how will I survive.

Gordon Brown has just announced he is setting up what we used to call in the 50's and 60's - Mother and baby homes. This is where they put mothers of illigitimate children.

And they say times have changed????

having worked with Teenagers for 30 years, I know that it is a fact that they see a baby as a good way of getting a council house and being 'treated' as an adult whether they are adult or not. (I speak as someone who had my first baby as 17 years of age. I worked to buy our first house and moved in when I was 18 years old - the ceiling fell in, the toilet was at the bottom of the yard - it froze after 3 weeks and we had to use a bucket and pour it down the manhole. They had no contraception then unless He went to the barbers and got 'something for the weekend'. By the time I was 22 I had 3 children - all living in the above house whilst we paid ourselves to moderise it. I worked to bring all my children up and never claimed benefit. Too many benefits and houses now.

Kids see far to much sex, be it on telly or Films or they can simply read about it in the papers.

They have a 'watershed. of 9pm my wife is a teacher and she says most of the kids in here catchment area dont go to be before 10pm so some good that is.

We are both no way prudish but lets keep what of couse is a natural part of and I say this not loosly ADULTHOOD behind closed doors and let kids be kids without having kids.

My son is almost 13, as we call it the kevin and perry age.....

We have a great relationship and talk about sex and contraception etc...yes he does get embarrassed at times, but at least he gets the facts from me and any litreture i can give him,.have also recorded programmes for him from the tv.....

He believes that he shouldnt have sex til at least 16, but realises , as do I that it may happen before.....we have discussed this fully, and when he feels that he may, I shall be supplying him with condoms.....

Yes, he may be under age, but better safe than sorry......

My stepdaughter came to me when she was 14 asking me to put her on the pill, she felt she was getting into heavy petting with the boyfriend and could go further.....

No, I did not put her on the pill, I discussed it with her and told her she needed to go to her mum to help her...i didnt want to be the "wicked step mum.... she did go on the pill, but remained a virgin til 16.

They are growing up tooo fast

billyboy1 - how on earth do you know she remained a virgin until she was 16? We tell our parents what they want to hear - you were young once, you know that.........we all have secrets.

proger1 - surely you know the old sayings a) "ask a teenager, they know everything" and b) "if it's not one thing, its your mother"!!!!!!!!!

I know she remained a virgin til the age of 16, casue she told me , and I believe her.....and I happen to know the boy also..

we have a policy of which I live by and so do my children...good or bad, we dont lie, cause the truth always comes out...

The truth may hurt at the time, but the lies you say at the time will hurt even more when they come out..

I personally had a lot of lies in my family, so that is what has made me be a totally truthful person, and i have taught my son that also...like it or not, you always get a honest answer and the truth...thats the way we are

My 10 year old grandson said to me "I know what sex is Nan" then said, it's when a man puts his limosine in a ladies garage. Oh well one way to describe it but still a shock from a 10 year old.

The school I worked at in the UK had a pro-active approach to sex education. We had our own, on site, very trendy approachable 'nurse' that any of the kids could turn to and tell in complete confidence, all the things they couldn't tell or ask their parents. (And there are parents who find it very difficult to talk to their kids). She spoke to them in a wonderful non patronising way about everything, not just having sex but waiting, love, family, growing up, everything. She would also give the advice on taking the pill to students and give them condoms if they were embarking on a 'relationship' that could end with a pregnancy. Our school was the only school for miles that didn't have at some time a girl leaving early because she was pregnant.

Then some fudderer at the local council says..the school was encouraging students into sex, so what happened..yup they pulled the funding.

Very sad, the next term we had a 16 year old, pregnant and no one to turn to until it was too late.

On a lighter note.

Tommys grandma is babysitting.

Tommy runs inside from playing with his pals and says ', Nan,Nan...what d'ya call it when two people sleep in the same room..you know, one on top of the other??'

Nan gulps and then bravely replies, 'Well, thats called sex'. Tommy runs off happy but returns soon and says, 'Its not sex nan, its bunk beds...and Billies mum wants to talk to you!

One reason they have sex/get pregnant is to feel like an adult. I left school at 15 and went to work on Monday as a junior-I was treated as an adult at home & at work. I was promoted into my own job at 16 and was training a junior. I issued work to the foremen and dealt with customer enquires and complaints. Today, we treat 16 year olds as kids - they are not kids. By the time I had my son at 18 yrs of age I had been in a job for 3 years. I was considered to be an adult and treated as an adult (even though I could not sign the papers for my first house as I was too young - the law then said the age was 21). I was able to cope with my living situation as a result of being 'treat' as an adult. Having taught teenagers for 30 years I can honesty say I have 'never' met a bad teenager - but I have met a lot of teenagers with 'bad parents' there are also so many sub-divisions within families now, different fathers, mothers, sisters etc, some do not learn to get and stay close to others
