I was parked outside a house I was viewing in Catalkoy yesterday when my parked car was hit by a niegbour reversing out (who lives) opposite. I helped her reverse off my car to which she just sped away. So I returned the next morning and tried to offer a solution by her paying for the scratches to be polished out. Unbelievably, her husband became angry and refused saying it was all my fault. I suggested that unless we resolved this between us then the police would have to be involved - he said go and get the police - so I did. What happened next was next to unbelievable.I was an onlooker to a turkish language "deal" being brokered between the police, the husband and the (English) wife, who by the way spoke very good Turkish. I was told that I would be charged for illegal parking - no charges against her or I can shut up and get the damages "fixed" by the husband "friends" and that would be the end of it. No police fairness here at all.

This is quite a serious allegation which if you cannot support it with evidence leaves you open to prosecution by the policeman for accusing him of bias. This is not a criticism of you nor am I saying that everything did not happen as you said but it's the same as in the UK where I can remember a similar case where someone used the internet to make accusations against a specific policemen and this resulted in prosecution. Now if you are willing to produce evidence and take this further, North Cyprus Free Press at http://www.northcyprusfreepress.com would happy to publish this evidence. Mal

I was told on entering the Island that if you have a bump/road incident, you should not move the vehicle until the police have been to measure up. Saying that there was a bump outside Tempo yesterday which caused quite a queue, so both cars drove away. One was quite badly damaged, having hit the other up the rear end.

message 5 - absolutely correct.. if you have an accident in TRNC - whatever it is - you need to call the police. If you dont do that you end up in cases like this.. police is always the way to go.

Why do women get charged lower premiums on car insurance than men? Simple, we have less accidents and are safer drivers! Here is a quote from the internet; 'Despite comments often made by men (disparaging remarks about ‘women drivers’ – everyone has heard a remark or two) if you look at statistics it appears that male bias against female motorists is misjudged. If statistics are looked into closely, rather than mere here-say or rumour, we can see that women are actually safer drivers. It is proven and documented that they have less severe accidents than their male counterparts. The facts speak for themselves and accuracy or bias within these stats does not come into play, as they are actually compiled by independent driving associations and the car insurance companies themselves.'

Firstly, I would like to point out that my wife IS a better and more patient driver than me however the insurance statements are not completely accurate. The cheaper insurance for woman is based on Risk factor not ability and it is also based primarily on the age group of 16 to 25 and that is changing as seen below copied from the net. The rate of female fatalities among young drivers in car accidents rose over 14 percent in the last 25 years – while male fatalities among the same age group dropped by 11 percent. More women are getting driver's licenses than they were a quarter of a century ago. They also seem to be picking up bad driving habits. Take into account that when it comes to motorway type driving which calls for higher speeds my wife always insists that I drive, thus the higher speed collision possibility. Back to thread, sorry about the situation but if you walk away from anything it is very hard to prove what happened later unless you take pictures, anywhere

Forget the sexism! Most drivers are crap most of the time but the standard of driving in TRNC is horrendous - but at least they don't go around claiming to be better than everyone else - as in UK.

No chance of a woman parking a car better than a man, my wife says that women know nothing about distance and measurements, But thats our fault because we have always lied to them and told them that 6 inches is 10.

Its amazing that we all forget we a foreigners in a foreign land. Even in the UK if you park obstructing / near to or by a ramp/ access / egress point you are deemed at fault as I found at some years ago. As for the Police its already been stated they Must be called to all accidents irrespective of damage etc. The Police decide whom is responsible unlike the UK where its knock for knock !!!!!! After working with the Police in the TRNC at various road traffic accidents I will say they do a thorough job and the decisions do not always please all the people all the time. Finally the language barrier can be a disadvantage and caused mis-interpretations on all sides..
