England's World Cup qualifier in Ukraine on Saturday will be shown exclusively live to subscribers on the internet who will pay at least £4.99.

All previously broadcast England matches have been available on TV.

who's punishing them? The truth is that following the demise of Setanta none of the traditional broadcaster's with UK rights bid anything like enough for the rights to the Ukranian F.A. Obviously, the BBC, ITV channels 4, 5,Sky and ESPN did not think that the showing of a meaningless game was worth a portion of the licence fee or would cover the cost through additional advertising revenue. The real fans are not showing enough interest to make it worthwhile it would seem.

If market forces are allowed to operate in this field (and they have vastly improved both the scope and quality of sports coverage) then the market cannot really complain when those same market forces respond to the apathy that the market exhibits.

£4.99 now but £10 on the day. Not for me to sit for over 90 minutes at a PC watching football.

Harold,

The people that think money is more important than the fortunes of the national football team are the ones that are punishing the true fan. The money men have turned the English premiership into a sterile top four plus the rest "competition". You say market forces have vastly improved both the scope and quality of sports coverage. I disagree. If you want to watch the top teams play each other over and over again ( any sport, not just football) then market forces are for you. I want to watch England play football every time they compete. There is no such thing as a meaningless England match to a true fan.

How can you say things have not improved coverage wise under SKY. You used to get highlights of maybe three matches on Motd with similar regional coverage on The Big Match?

Yes the big 4 get a lot of coverage but they pull the audience. Every premier league side get at least two live games a season though.

Harold,

I can't afford sky and there lies the problem. The money men have priced me out of it. I would begrudge paying my hard earned to sky anyway because they show the same teams all the time. The less popular teams get two games a season and are paid accordingly by sky. This polarises the haves and have nots and has ruined the competition.

I am disgusted and feel this may be the thin edge of the wedge

I Consider myself fortunate to be in a position to afford sky TV but will freely admit I only have it for Football

I find that Sky are so much better than any of the other channels there showing of the match and the making of time to show all the contentious decisions fully.

But I really do honestly Feel that the NATIONAL teams FOOTBALL CRICKET ect should be shown on terrestrial TV and a good portion of the blame for lack of internationals lies purely with the FA in Football and the EWCB for cricket hence we had the opening of the ASHES in BL@@DY WALES cos GlamorganCCC paid 3 million to host it!!!

No offence intended to any welsh folk its just the Ashes are an English Australian Argument !!
