A report in todays Daily News [a Turkish newspaper printed in English] states that..........

The prime minister, Mr. Erdogan, in a speech to the A.K.P. at its third congress, the ruling party, he said that relations with the E.U. would only be on a "flirt" basis.

This is to be taken as a policy statement. Add to this his refusal of an I.M.F. loan which Turkey does not need, and times round here become very interesting.

All the more power to this man who cares more for his country and people than the Europeans.

I am surprised that no one has added comments to the above post.

As it is a policy statement it will undoubtably affect TRNC very much.

It also answers DC question that is on another thread "if not the EU , what?

The answer is TURKEY

There is no future for Turkey or the TRNC in the EU the sooner they forget about joining the better. The blundering Brussels bandwagon is bound to hit the rocks as its being bled dry by to many hangers on and freeloaders, Germany cannot afford to keep the Union afloat for ever, the UKs skint, France want more out than they put in, the rest are parasites with Ireland being the biggest. Hope they stay well clear.

Very much agree with the points raised in messages 1 - 5

Who wants to join a club where the current members do not want you for religious and racial reasons

Perhaps Turkey should exit European Footaball and Song contest etc as well

Russia and the 57 Islamic nations beckon with a Taiwan style 'solution', or as a part of Turkey...

As I said ..hopefully this is what the tc's want, otherwise it is them that will continue to suffer.

Dear mmmmmm

I can only tell you that which has been reported in the Daily News.

Apparantly 5 or 6 months ago, the I.M.F. offered Turkey a huge loan to see it through the recession.

Talks were started, but petered out when prime minister Erdogan said that Turkey did not need the money.

This is the substance of what the paper reported at various times, and I have seen no more about it.

Perhaps Mr. Erdogan sees the offer in the same light that I do, a blatant attempt to put Turkey into hock.

And once again all power to him in his efforts to safeguard his country and people.

re msg 10

>>You are clearly more aware than most...... do you know why? (not speculation please - the truth)<<

Would you expect anything less than the truth from me..?! ...

TR didn't accept the terms of the loan - what we can debate is WHY?

Mr Erdogan didn't WANT to be 'hemmed in' by IMF limits on spending.

But.. don't take MY word for it .. it was all in a TR newspaper..

speculating only, but i think they turned down the imf loan because they dont want to be held by the "short and curlies"or to be held like a puppet because they owe vast sums of money! And good on em! i say,if you cant even have control over your own money you always have somebody else holding the cards and calling the shots and they can make you or break you because of it!

DearBill- re msg 13

>>Mark, are you saying that the Press don't lie?<<

I'm saying this paper is a TR based paper and I've not noticed a biased 'agenda' in it's reporting ..!

I think the article covers the WHY ....
