Went to Karmi today with friends, what a lovely quaint village, one could just as easily be in a village in Kent or Yorkshire. Called at an eatery for a coffee, was delicious(Cappuchino) in small cup and a piece of cake for 3 persons, then we decide to have another coffee. Total bill 54 TL ouch!!!

Cake was 5tl each which made it 6.5 lira per cup of coffee. Oh well, the view was priceless.

I agree totally with Nick. A rip off. All the while people just pay up these prices will continue to be charged.

I would normally question bill but my friend said leave it they obviously think we are tourists. It was called Levant Bistro, after a walk we then went to Crows nest and had 1 lemonade, 1 coke and half pint shandy and that was 9 Tl total which was spot on. Very reasonable.

Very sorry to hear that you had an unpleasant experience at (I’ll assume) the Levant!

The price of our coffee (using freshly ground, imported Italian beans) is 4 TL and a cappuccino is 5 TL. Please accept our apologies if an error was made in your bill and let us make it up to you. Please try us again and have a free cappuccino and cake on us.

Mindy Hi

Did you not check the prices of the coffee etc then pointed it out that we owe you this much, and then say can you tell us what we had to warrant 54ytl sounds like it was the waiter who saw you coming.

Go back as Levant says and he will sort it out

Well nothing new here, as Fazo informed us in one of his recent posts. If your a tourist, or take your finger off the the pulse for a second the sharks here will have you for breakfast, most of them are at it, so as they say buyer beware, name and shame the culprits so they can be avoided en masse.

=> Fazo in his post did not "inform" us. Because he didn't give the name of the place he criticised for its prices. So I agree with the last words in your post: "name and shame the culprits etc". Which should have been done in the starting post of this thread also - it was incomplete now.

you only get one chance in life to make a good first impression ,more so in business.

if you think everybody is a cash cow ,then you rip off at your cost for future business.

kavenkoy - i believe it was an honest mistake made by Levant, and nothing to do with being a 'tourist' the menus are all priced and as smithy said did they not double check the bill before handing over the money. Miscalculations can happen, its a fact, and Levant have apologised for that.

Mindy - go back up to karmi, and give Levant another chance, as you said the views were priceless.

Levant

Very good of you to reply regarding our visit to your Bistro, Can I just say we were 100% satisfied with the service, one reason we didn't question price was I couldn't see price list for beverages displayed, now it maybe was and I missed it, I wasn't sullying the restaurant in any way as some forum members thought. So now I will apoligise for even daring to mention it in the first place. I would reccomend the Levant to anyone, it is like going back in time, the surroundings are second to none. Lets hope this is the end of the matter and on the plus side your customer numbers will rise due to the publicity.

On this occasion, the "mistake" made was highlighted on a public forum, and the establishment was able to offer an apology and make effort to offer compensation to resolve the problem.

However, all too often various establishments in North Cyprus make the "mistake" of overcharging tourists or providing poor service. These tourists leave, never to return and tell there friends.

The toleration of this behaviour quite frankly baffles me. Calling this good customer service and putting an article about it on a website is unbelievable. Good customer service would involve being able to add up the price of 3 coffees and cake, without making the mistake in the 1st place. When you are dealing with tourists in a place like Karmi, you only get one chance.

If I had a pound for each time somebody tried to rip somebody off, then pass it off as a mistake when it was noticed..... Shocking!

In 40 years of visiting Cyprus - both sides - I cannot remember one incident of being ripped off. Why do brits perpetuate this myth ? Is it because they think everybody is like themselves??!! Just a thought - and the attitude seems to eminate from the same people each time. The ones who constantly whine on about litter, the locals this , the locals that. Go back to where you belong!!

Makes you wonder what foreigners find so appealing about the Uk.!!!

little john, msg 22, so if something hasn't happened to you then it can't possibly have happened to anyone else??? Then you blame "brits" and then you swear and all this at 00:28 on a Saturday morning.

This week, at a petrol station near Girne, I had to pay 50 TL and gave 2x 20 TL and 1x 50 TL in error. The man who had served me showed me the bank notes at once and I could change the 50 TL bank note for a 10 TL bank note. Off topic in this rip off thread, but this happened in TRNC also.

P.S. And yes, before someone asks, I appreciated his honesty with another bank note.

Back on topic: "All expats get ripped off in TRNC all day long and everywhere".
