I am building the Cyprus Veterans memorial in the Old British Cemetery Kyrenia.

371 young men died between 1956 - 1959, and on 8th Nov several hundred elderly people are coming out for the dedication.

We start building on 19th Oct. and I am really desperate to find a plant hire or contact for a Telescopic Lifter or a crane. Also tool hire for a generator and 120 volt site transformer.

Any help would be gratefully received.

I do feel sad about the 371 young Brits who died, many only 18. I missed National. Service, but their generation were called up with no choice, some to Cyprus to be shot, some to Porton Down to be poisoned, some to Christmas Island to be nuked.

thanks

The company referred to above is called Carmal Ltd (pronounced Jarmal). Tel: 0542 857 8559 Osman he speaks excellent english whereas the staff on site did not speak any when we went 4 months ago.

Directions are: From Girne turn left after Ian Smiths (which will be on your right), the turning is right opposite an olive oil factory. Follow the road until you come to a small crossroads and turn right and it is a couple of metres along on the right hand side

kwr1945,

I hope that you get the help you want as it is a very valuable job you are doing in building this memorial. It should have been built may years ago!

If anyone is interested there is a guest book where you can see the names of all those who died here in Cyprus, sorry I don't have the link. It is a very humbling experience to read this. May they R.I.P.

From what I've heard the ceremony at the Cemetery is strictly by invitation only.

This is because there is limited space there and naturally priority is being given to the relatives of the dead of whom between 200 and 300 are flying in for the occasion.

I can't find anything about invitations, just the book of remembrance.

Has any one got any concrete info about the ceremony ?

Sincere thanks for the information on plant hire, our main concern is a telescopic handler such as a JCB 535

It would be really useful if anyone could send email links for the plant hire.

A really super person called Donald Crawford had the inspiration for the project.

I understand that the road will be closed with a large TV screen available. Sadly, as the cemetery is small, even relatives will not be able to all enter during the cemetery.

I understand that the BBC are doing a live link for their national coverage. I have met so many of the veterans and their families and feel so privileged to be involved.

I am new to forums like this, if anyone could put the request for plant hire contacts on the forum home page, it may attract more help?

Many thanks to all who have responded.
