OK I've just signed too, but.............

Please don't sign as MR & MRs or the UKTURK family, as this will only count a one signatory.

If there is more than one in the family that supports this issue, then have them sign individually.

Not that this Government will do anything about it. It doesn't do anything for it's own citizens let alone another countries.

But we all must try if we believe.

I signed.

I dont want the North to be united with the South. History proves it would not work. A separate recognised state is the only way.

gottheyips,arty and breezyboy thanks!!!

i too personally feel north cyprus would do better on their own rather than being unified and the only solution i hope for is that these embargos are lifted and both states go it alone on a peacefull level

we can only pray for a good outcome

Hi ukturk,

signed the petition to lift all bans embargos from the people of North Cyprus

not sure about the Turkish republic as I don't know enough about the politics of the country, but you don't need unity to live in Harmony.

Erkan,

After alot of serious thought and soul searching i have changed my mind re-unification and think it would be better to keep the north and south seperate as long as embargos are lifted and fair trading is allowed so i have signed the petition.Great posts today mate good luck and may your god go with you,

Warm Regards,

Paul.

Hi Erkan

Just signed - whatever else happens the TRNC must get recognition. How could unification talks even be started when the two parties cannot go to the negotiating table with comparable international standing?

I'm far from wild about the idea of unification anyway, but that comes second; first we must keep fighting for recognition.

If I ever have to go into battle Erkan I hope you will be on my side!

Kind regards

Jo

I did read some where on the net turkey was getting bored of supporting northern cyprus if that did happen where would they stand if talks failed they would be left to fend for them self because they get all their goods from turkey lets hope this does not happen

hi guys

robbo, andre, ronaldo, the jock family and brandy sour thanks for taking time out and signing these petitions like i said its not for me more for cyprus and eventually we will get heard one way or another!!!!

brandy sour i can tell you this will never happen firstly north cyprus name k.k.t.c which translates into english north cyprus turkish republic and turkey considers north cyprus one of its republic states, secondly over three quaters of its army are from the turkish mainland, and at least a quarter of its population are settlers from turkey with many buisness that are owned by turkish mainlanders, so it would be very difficult for turkey to just drop north cyprus of its familyhood

i for one read a lot of turkish newspapers and here in turkey they always say they will never leave its brothers and sisters of north cyprus out to dry!!!! and at the end of the day turkey has supported north cyprus and its turkic people for over 40 years so why would they stop now and also one of the reasons turkey has not joined the e.u sooner is because its stance on cyprus and not reconising the south as a indepadent country

hope this clears up things mate

take care and regards to you all and thanks for supporting such important subject even if it does nothing at least we can show the puppets there are many people who support the north cyprus plight especially people who are not turkish

people power!!!!

Just to add to your piece Erkan. I can't see Turkey giving up NC. I think the issue Turkey has, is that, it doesn't want to waste money in NC. It seems that a large part of the money it sends over goes in to providing government jobs i.e pen pushers. It wants NC to become self suffcient, to create more of a entrepeneurial culture, not one of beuaracracy. Has to be the right way to go.

Turkey also wants to reduce the number of troops on the island (to save money) and replace it with militaralised technical solutions.

Also too much Turkish blood was spilled in taking over NC. Could Britain give the Falklands to Argentina. It's unlikely. A friend of mine who fought in the Falklands war is going back there in November with 50 of his comrades. They saw many of their friends perish in that war and the scars remain.

I think also, deep down Turkey probably sees Cyprus as it's island, as the Ottoman empire ruled it fo 300 Years. At the same time it is only 40 miles from the Turkish mainland.

A GC who is part of the 'working group' (in finding a solution) stated that he had never seen so much willingness on both sides to come to a solution, however, at the same time he had never seen the two sides so far apart in their demands. (this was stated in the 'economist' magazine.) A solution has to be based on compromise, but neither seems willing to do so (same goes for Turkey). It is unbelievable that the GC's are still penalising the TC's, and actively doing so. This does not encourage good relations. Without compromise the frustration is going to grow and the enthusiasm for a solution is likley to wane.

The best solution has to be for the TRNC to be recognised, for the Embargoes to be lifted, for the GC's and TC's to be adeqautely compensated for land loss, for both sides to trade freely with each other and for freedom of movement to be encouraged and supported across the island. This may mean a hastened entry in to the Eurpoean Union for the TRNC. The advantage to many Brits of EU membership maybe that it becomes far easier to reside in the TRNC etc.

Just a side note, recently I was very very lucky to do some work in Singapore. It was really interesting to contrast Singapore with Cyprus. Both were Britsh Crown Colonies, and it is interesting to note how they have both developed since independence. Although most liberals would cringe, I think Northern Cyprus could learn a heck of a lot from Singapore about law and order. If the TRNC wants to grow and develop, to become entrepeneurial it has to impose much greater discipline. There are still too many stories of people being ripped off and people like Gary Robb walking around freely.

Hello Mark,

Great post mate hope you are well and keeping busy. Its a good point that you make regarding the fact that both sides are willing to talk which is great but i still think there will be alot of points that they will be so far apart on that it will be almost impossible to agree.

One point i picked up from the press the other day was the fact that the french minister of foreign affairs was quoted as saying that "there is no question of Turkey joining the eu if it fails to recognise the republic of cyprus".its worth remembering that the french do actually carry alot of clout,

Regards,

Paul.

Hi Paul, I am good mate, loving the English sun - long may it continue. Hope you are well too mate?

Yeah, the French do carry alot of clout. I think they are inherently biased against Turkey though. Not sure they are wise to threaten Turkey. Turkey is a proud nation, like France, and may not react well to beng pushed in to a corner. Certainly Turkey is a little vulnerable right now, due to it's economy, mostly stemming from it's internal politics, but Turkey can probably offer Europe alot more than some of the more recent acquisitions in to the EU. Turkey can offer it's young and increasingly well educated population.

Didn't the two leaders of the North and South get together yesterday? Do you know how that went? It's quite excitng seekng what is going to happen next. Does anybody know what language the negotiations are taking place under? Is it English?

As well as the many, well stated sticking points, I think language is going to be a major problem. For the two sides to develop a good relationship they need to build trust. It was demonstrated to me recently how difficult trust is to develop without a common language (certainly over the long term)

Just signed Embargo.

Has anyone UK based suggested petitioning our local MP's, MEP's for support?
