Having tried various Indian restaurants in NC, which we have enjoyed, these are cooked in the Pakistani style. In the UK our local Indian (and most others) are Bangladeshi chefs - which is a very different style.

Which style of Indian cuisine would you say it was closer to?

In the meantime we shall shortly be ordering our Friday night "Ruby Murray" from the Balti Raj!

Spud1;

Obviously being a Brummie you miss the old home cooking so for your benefit Nosheen is at Friends Hotel Alsancak.

On the coast road just before the Merit turn.

I need to reciprocate a meal however, the person in question was worried about the car park facilities from his last experience over a year ago under a different regime. Has this now been sorted? No bad reviews to date!

my experience with a takeaway

I ordered 2 garlic naan, 1 x chicken jalfreize, 1 x chicken chilli masala & 2x garlic pillau plus a bottle of effes to drink whilst the order was prepared. Gave them £50 & got 43 ytl change.

Cost was (all from memory as i wasn't given a receipt) 21.95ytl for the chicken curries, 4.50 each for the garlic pillau & about 4ytl for the naan breads. Basically you are looking at about 30ytl for a chicken curry with rice & a naan.

It was pepared quicker than expected & was handed my order with my meal in a carrier bag.

When I got home the curries were placed at the bottom of the carrier bag with the rice on top & because the rice containers were smaller than the curry containers the weight had pushed through the lids of the curries & there was sauce all ove the bottom of the carrier bag. Anyway sat down to eat & the 2 garlic naans were in fact pashwari's & the portions of curries were not that big at all, taking into consideration that some sauce had s

spillt in the bag

Naans were very big though & were nice but i was mostly disappointed with the size of the curry portions. The rice was also very nice. Loads of naan bread but hardly any curry to mop up with it.

I was disappointed that they got so many things wrong on such a simple order & it wasn't even busy - 6.30pm. Out of the 7 things I ordered they got 3 things wrong & I feel that the curry itself is way overpriced for how much I got.

Will I go again ??? Yes, but only to buy naan breads & I will stick to making my own curries cos I cant make naans like they do.

What I do find laughable is that people rave about the curries here & even kebabs too for that matter. I don't think there is a curry house in Derby (UK ) that wouldn't blow these out the water regarding taste & price for either curries or kebabs. Can't stress that enough.

It's close but I think the Punjab would get my vote. Only thing Nosheen has in its favour for me are the naans.

jimmy - I found your post interesting, particularly as I believe it's the only one I've seen regarding Nosheen not singing their praises. We don't usually bother with curries whilst we're on holiday, preferring to wait until we get back home, although we did go to Punjab this time, which we found to be good (although not what we're used to in UK, but very enjoyable).

Will definitely give Nosheens a go next time. It's nice and local for us and, if nothing else, the Naans might be worth going for

Hi Jeannie, (Mess 27)

just wanted to relay my experience - no biases towards any restaurant.

In the last two years I have read on here various reports from people about chinese, & indian restaurants & even fish & chips outlets come to that. I have simply come to the conclusion that half the people on here don't have a clue. Either that or I have been very lucky where I have eaten for the past 30 odd years.

Someone said that a certain place did the best fish & chips that they had ever tasted & that they should know cos they came from a seaside fishing village. Was it any good ?? it was OK at best !!!! I was anticipating something special & was again fooled by the hype.

I have been out with several people that have said "that was a fantastic meal" & I have agreed out of politeness.

One thing I have learned here is dont trust anyone when it comes to food. The only thing I trust are my taste buds.

jimmy - my sentiments exactly!! I think you just have to draw the conclusion that one person's idea of a great meal is, obviously, not another's. We have been disappointed many times going on others recommendations, and like you, have agreed with them about the quality of the food out of politeness. I have wondered, in the past, whether we have been 'spoilt for choice' in the UK.

So, "one man's meat is another man's poislon" type of thing??? (literally).

Regards.

Waited a long time for a decent Indian to open and at long last here it is.

Nosheen is in a class of its own, no disrespect but way above the quality of the others, in my opinion.

Went there twice in the last week and both times have had a fantastic meal and the service was second to none .

Highly recommend this establishment

The naans must be good as the owner, Tariq, told me that tonight a customer came in and bought 13 yes 13 naan breads to take away!!! well they are very big and very tasty!

Twas I that bought the 13 naans.............. For me a proper naan makes a curry & these are easily the best naans that I know of round here.

We went to the Lambousa market to get a couple of curries off the Indian lady but she had sold out so instead we had a curry making session & made a massive bowl of chicken curry plus a smaller pan of Lamb curry & managed to make about 10 curries in total with each one enough to feed a family of 4. We bought some of those takeaway tin foil type dishes (the big ones) & froze the curries along with portions of rice & the naans & we have enough curry to start a restaurant

Have to say that the curries turned out superb & could have easily passed for a "bought" takeaway curry.

Spent 50ytl on naans, used about 7ytl worth of basmati rice, 50 ytl of meat & 5ytl worth of onions & spices etc. So each curry has cost about 11ytl each which will feed us 4 for the next 10 weeks.

Morning, in my (humble!) opinion Nosheen's is not only by far the best Indian food I have had in Cyprus, but also one of, if not the best I've had anywhere in an Indian restaurant. I would quite happily eat there every night of the week!! Back to Jimmy's comments, obviously everyone will have a different opinion, and it's a shame you had such a bad experience, the times we've been the service has been impecable. I am surprised about your comments re portions though, ours have been very generous with loads of really great sauce. Of course opinions are subjective, and neither right nor wrong, but being half Indian I have obviously some experience of Indian food, and I personally would say this restaurant is fantastic!!

They're also really nice people and I wish them all the luck.

We went twice when we were over last month. The first time in a company of 6 and then in a company of 8.

The food was first class, the price were good, the service was excellent and the main man, Tariq, is a really nice man.

Will I go back again, too right I will.

After all the hype on this forum was really looking forward to a curry at nosheens.

We went last monday 26th Oct.......Nan bread and the service was excellent...but in my opinion the meal was average

There was 5 of us and we all felt there was plenty of sauce but not a lot of meat in the dishes we ordered

i had Chichen Tikka Misala and asked for Madras hot.....but actually tasted medium hot

Agree with earlier post i find the curries in the UK much better than here.....especially Glasgow

So its back to the tried and tested Jashans or Punjab for us.......maybe i will ask Riaz if we can bring our own nan bread!!!!

Well everyone obviously has their opinion - and mine is that no where on the island compares to Nosheens. I've been 4 times since it opened and I can only give 10/10 for everything. Tariq has run an indian restaurant in Aberdeen (I think) for 15 years plus, so he must be doing something right.

As i said, each to their own - but so far we have been with around 20 different people and ALL have said it's one of the best they've tasted!

ENJOY!!

Jimmyboy

You will have to ask for more sauce at Punjab if it is anything like when I went a few weeks ago. There was barely 2 dessert spoons of sauce with my chicken malai, shan't go back there again now I have tasted Nosheens fare.

Went to Nosheens last night with my family, they are all vegetarian and they were over the moon at the choice on offer. We are meat eaters and were also impressed with the huge choice of dishes on offer. Food was brilliant, portions were huge, service was great and price more than fair, cannot fault it at all and will definitely be going back, wonderful !!

Throughly enjoyed my dansak but could be more to do with the fact i haven't had one for about four years. Waiting staff - need to lay off and let people enjoy their meal. When one member of our party was still eating they tried to remove her plate stating finish. Then with the main meal i had everyone's dishes around my 25% full plate and my mouth full and they tried to remove it again Finish. This service made me feel a pig but plus very un welcome, time to go home.

Been back to Nosheens on severak occassions now with many different guests and have absolutely no complaints at all. Excellent food, lots of it, great service (definately not over the top waiters and never had the problems snd mentions above).

By far the best Indian in North Cyprus and probably better than alot in the UK.

everything is orange as thats how bangladeshi chefs cook if they are bangladeshi chefs that is,if they are thats why i never enjoyed the curry, cos i dont like there style of cooking. personally i would not return to nosheens for a meal. roti /chapatti good. stuffed keema paratha good, but i suppose if u got the right tools,u cant go wrong in making such simple sundries, curry was garbage in my opinion, maybe i was spoiled when i lived in manchester by real pakistani curries,to be perfectly honest, sheraz rafters happy valley curries are more superior, what nosheens serve is what i call tourist food or curries for the english, bangladeshi style curries for the english palate. give me a pakistani style curry any day of the week,,also i found it quite dangerous to have to break all the speed limits to get home to the bathroom after eating at nosheens. all is just my humble opinion by the way.

One of the people we went with is half Indian, growing up with an Indian father that cooked authentic Indian food for most meals of the day. She reckons that this is as close as you will get to real Indian food outside of India/Pakistan.

I think maybe it's you Zerochlor that might be used to the 'curries for the English palate' you are used to getting in Manchester!! Maybe this is too authentic for you, being as the the lady we were with spent many years living and travelling around India.

Which do you think serves a proper curry - India or Manchester?? lol

Dont think it really matters if its authentic or not. its what people want to eat at the end of the day that matters because its a business. I could cook the most authentic yorkshire puddings in the world but if no one likes them its pointless!! most people in the UK havnt got a clue about indian food and just stick to what they know, which half the time is dishes that arnt even eaten in india/packistan etc

everybody has different tastes, I found nosheens OK, nothing special, much prefer the punjab because that is maybe closer to what you get in the UK. I dont feel paying the extra at Nosheens is worth it, and it is more expensive!!

People want to go out and have a tasty meal thats is value for money and something they enjoy. Im not going to rave about nosheens and say it was brilliant just becasue its more authentic than the others. for me it was OK. but as I say it all depends on your taste.

My experience of eating Indian food .... in India, is nothing like i have had anywhere else.

We were served our meat dishes which were relatively 'tame' ....you then select from various spices and sauces according to your taste ....and constitution!

After reading all the hype about nosheen myself and my wife went all the way from essentepe to give it a whirl.

Well i really must say i was pleasantly shocked to say the least when i looked though the menu.

This green eatery must be the most expensive curry house in the whole of cyprus.

i dont wish to get into a heated discussion about curries, what im trying to say basically is that i didnt enjoy nosheens food for a number or reasons,to much red food colouring for 1,3 out of the 4 dishes tasted the same. yes maybe im used to home cooking as the asians call it ,maybe ive been spoilt, and also i think if you go to india or pakistan you will not find the array of curries on offer on the menu in nosheens,so as to the comment regarding the best curries or watever outside india or pakistan i feel that is hogwash.Again those curries are made for the english palate.

Give me a pakistani style curry any day and cooked by a pakistani chef not a bengali chef.

But you keep enjoying nosheens and i and others will keep enjoying the real curries in and around catalkoy oh and punjab over that side.

end of discussion. good luck nosheen !

One man's meat is another man's poison.

we are all individuals with individual tastes, likes and dislikes.

what amazes me is there seems to be no middle ground when it comes to people views on restaurants either the place is carp or brill, it's either the best food ever had or the worst.

Some of the places people rave about I have been to and would not go back again but I do not think it is fare to slate the business just because it was not to my liking. once again all down to personal taste.

to much negativity seems to be spread around these days!

Well I look forward to tasting the Curry when I am out in a weeks time.

I have eaten curries all round the world and in TRNC the best to date is Al Shaheen in Karakum.

Not overly impressed with all the others Kukri,Punjab,East is East,Jashan,Sultans, and Courtyard.

For Nosheens to be the best I always use my normal taster a Chicken Madras and if thats good I return and enjoy lots more choices.

Best Curryhouse that I rate is in Aldershot by the name of Johnny Gurkhas!

Any one else been there!

We went to Nosheen last night for their much advertized Indian Meze. I can say that this was the worst meal we have had - ever! The food was bordering on disgusting, the lager tepid , a bottle of water served to us had clearly been opened and re-filled. We booked well in advance, advised the manager that there were two vegetarians coming- no problem he said but oh yes there was! The food arrived and there was nothing for our vegetarians to eat. After complaining a small plate of greasy, unappetizing items arrived consisting of rock hard onion bagees and awful cold potato things, that defy further descripion. If to add insult to injury, the nann bread given to our veggie friends contained minced meat. Non Veggies didn't do much better. The meat being so awful that we pushed it aside almost untouched.

Trying to forget the evening, but as the food keeps repeating this is difficult. I keep getting one recurring thought in my mind, I think I an going to throw up! As for the belly dancer...

Re message 60

We were there last night and can only (regretably) confirm the standard of the food. It was pretty dreadful. We also were given bottled water that had obviously been refilled - the bottle wasn't filled to the top and the seal was broken. We brought this to the waiters attention and it was changed immediately.

Had eaten at Nosheens before and enjoyed what we felt was one of the best curries on the island. Very disappointed with last nights experience.

I think that they would be best advised to stick to their a la carte menu rather than trying to cater for a 'catch all' meze experience - it really didn't work.

And before anyone asks, yes we did bring our disappointment to the attention of the 'manageress' whose response can be best described as indifferent.

We went there on the 'off chance' and turned away as fully booked, we did not know that there was a 'special night' on last night!!! After reading msg 60 & 62, we are thankful now!! Had a nice meal in Mama Mia's. Chicken with lemon and corriander sauce and Scillian Chicken for Snakes with salad and chips. Very nice. Must add that we have always enjoyed our curries at Nosheens in the past.

I had a take away from Nosheens on Friday night and it was fantastic as always. Maybe they overstretched themselves by trying to offer something out of their normal repetoir?!

I started the Indian Restaurant debate site last year. I gave Nosheens a glowing report, after eating there for my wifes birthday.

So many people went along on my reco. Then we went back for a 2nd visit. there was someone well known to me in there fetching a take away, he had also gone on my reco.

So I stopped the preview there and then. Its like football, you are only as good as your last game.

Tariuq who runs the place is avery nice guy, I would think he has put a lot of money into that place, he deserves better from his staff.

went to nosheens last night..... what a shambles, we have eaten there before and always enjoyed the food, last night it was appalling, the service was even worse, it looked like family and friends were serving the food, in no order whatsoever, we saw quite a few people leave bypassing the till and we can understand why. they seemed totally unprepaired for the event even though it was bookings only, they knew how many people were comming. on a positive note we shall go back when normal service is resumed.

I have been to nosheens on many occassions, the food and service has always been fantastic.

But we did go on their meze night, and the service was worse than terrible. However, as someone that has eaten a fair bit of Indian food, when the food came, it was good, it's not what you would "normally" find on most indian restauarant menu's, but it was good. But, the service was so bad it did spoil the evening. And there was no excuse to be honest, as the food was meze, everyone was having the same, so the drinks should have been easy.

However, as people that enjoy the restaurant, and like Tariq, we decided the best thing to do was tell him, so he could receive feedback, hopefully acknowledge the faults and deal with them.

I think if you go on a "normal" night, you'd be pushed to find fault, as above in Shaynewards case, this is only my opinion, and obviously everyone will have very different tastes, some will like it, some not! (as you'll see above!!)
