Barack Obama has just been awarded the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize. My personal opinion is that he has not been around long enough and done enough to deserve this. What are your thoughts?

RE msg 4, chris75: (...) Well i think he deserves it (...)

=> For doing what exactly for "the Peace"? Or: for being what? This Nobel Prize cannot be justified - which unfortunately happened before (remember Arafat, Kissinger and the list doesn't end here).

Obama won because of " his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples"

Wasn't it only a couple of weeks ago that he 'blanked' Gordon Brown? So much for International Diplomacy!!

Some previous winners of the Nobel Peace prize included, Martin Luther King Junior,Mother Teresa,Desmond Tutu,Nelson Mandela and Mikhail Gorbachev. These were more worthy winners - not Obama.

I meant to say doesn't, mistake!

How can the leader of a nation at war be given a prize for 'Peace'?

President Obama doesn't appear to actually have a peace plan at the moment.

Someone sending more troops to war is winning Peace Nobel Prize

Though ,He has played his part,in toning down the madness G.W Bush

had unleashed on Earth But prize ...

Morgan Tsvangarai (Zimbabwe)was one of the favourites. Some very interesting comments flying in on the BBC's web site. Worth a read.

I agree he doesnt deserve it. He has only just taken office. I dont know for sure, because i dont know the other nominess, but i would imagine there would have been some other nominees more deserving.

Obama has made good moves, i.e. trying to reach out to all nations, and cultures, (see Egypt speech)

and giving the U.N. its much denied respect. Maybe it is a little premature, but don't underestimate the

change in attitude of the most powerful nation on earth.

Does that mean you dont have to do anything to promote peace, just intend to,sometime in the future?

Might as well give it to Miss World as most of these girls want to end world poverty and end all wars as well.

Doyen 1/Msg 8:

You 'put the ring around it'!

Obama hasn't been on the scene 5 minutes - those notables you mention gave a lifetime's work and sacrifice to be awarded such an accolade as 'The Nobel Peace Prize'.

Political expedience triumphs yet again!

You miss the point - Miss Worlds have no power but U.S. President has. Maybe they want to give

him encouragement to follow up! I note that Israelis were not too pleased about it, so maybe he

is doing a balancing act.

Obama won because of " his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples" ...

...by having US troops fighting killing and causing destruction in other countries.

whos next years winner, Dubya Bush!??!?!?!

But it is OK, hes giving the money to charity...probably a US based one and not for one of the poor countries his troops are spending billions blowing up so that US companies can get the contracts to build them up again.

C'mon, Obama himself said he was surprised.

"I do not feel that I deserve to be in the company of so many transformative figures that have been honored by this prize"

msg. 20 "I note that Israelis were not too pleased about it"

Interestingly, on what basis do you said that? Any public polls?

Dear Hans

re msg 6

>> For doing what exactly for "the Peace"? Or: for being what? This Nobel Prize cannot be justified - which unfortunately happened before (remember Arafat, Kissinger and the list doesn't end here).<<

The irony of you mentioning the farce of Henry Kissinger getting this prize in 73, whilst being involved in a long-term plan to remove Makarios ( playing off the GR based Junta and the Turks) AND being complicit in the deaths of French Nationals during US meddling in Chile can't be lost on you !

Also, please remember that Arafat got this accolade after renouncing violence- and it was jointly awarded to Peres and Rabin ( who paid with his life) ..Arafat was also the target for assassination by extremists from his own 'side'.

It did seem somewhat premature, but as Message 26 said, Obama himself was surprised to have received it. Hopefully the money will be distributed fairly to deserving charities across the globe
