Handing the annual paper work for temporary visitor into the Girne Police station a gentleman of 82 years who has resided here for 22 years was doing the same thing. We went into the process room together after a two and half hour wait and one of the immigration officers was puzzled at his status stating he had 'done his time'. He then said, with a grin, he would now have to do his military service! Who said plod doesn't have a sense of humour! Though having a property here, he now lives in a hotel as he's too frail to look after himself. Very sad. Missing a document the Police were sympathetic and waived its necessity and processed him anyway. Surely this is not correct that he still needs to do this laborious annual exercise.

Richard,

Why after 22 years was this poor soul still having temporary residency. Surely he can now have permanent at his age. Actually after 22 years he deserves to have Citizenship.

I have always found the police in Girne Police station to be very nice and no problems. This year hubby forgot to take his 'blue' book. I did my bit we then drove back to Lapta and when hubby returned to the police station they recognised him and processed him straight away.

Chris

The Police were very good with him and somewhat puzzled. He was going through the annual temporary visitor routine. I don't think it's their fault but that of the Immigration Department in Nicosia. He told me had taken advice from the BRS, that probably sums it all up!

Please don't shoot me down in flames .. But .. I have heard from a couple of sources, that after the age of 60 no need to apply for residency .. Anyone know of this .. Could it be another thing the authorities don't tell you

Re:- message 5.

We, also, were told that there was no need to apply for residency after the age of 60. We queried this at the Police Station, and also got a BRS committee member to investigate, since he had meetings with TRNC officials. The answer came back that we all had to have either a Residency or Work Permit, no matter how old.

I can tell you from personal experience, not needing a resident's permit after the age of 60 is an urban myth.

This can also be confirmed by the other half dozen or so of us that spent 3 hours waiting in a queue at Nicosia today.

This elderly gentleman should have been be awarded the 'key to the gates of Girne' long ago, never mind treated like this.

In my mind, from the moment he advised BRS of his situation, they should have made it a priority to contact the Chief of Immigration and requested him to intervene on this gentleman's behalf. I let my BRS subscription lapse - so glad I did!

Nursie; they should have processed him straight into the cells for what he did to that Walker guy at the border on wednesday!

Tenakoutou; How do you expect the BRS to persuade immigration to ignore the law of the land?

If it's a bad law lobby for change.

I'm sure they have sorely missed your tenner.
