When I was a kid in the good weather the whole street would be out playing fottball, cricket, tennis etc even our mums and dads joined in. Is'nt it a shame that you never see that nowadays. What are your childhood memories?

Chris, you are so right, you would always see me doing handstands up the wall, (showing my knickers as usual ) and all the kids would be playing one game or another, but I think the world has changed, today is not safe for the little ones to be playing outside on their own, We didn't have the toys which the children have now, but by god we knew how to enjoy ourselves all the same, my father made us all scooters with ball bearings in noisy but great fun. Those were the days Sheila

RE msg 1, nurse: (...) When I was a kid in the good weather the whole street would be out playing fottball, cricket, tennis etc even our mums and dads joined in. (...) => I remember it from Amsterdam, between 1945-1955. But you fail to mention that our parents then started to buy cars, fill the streets with them - and would slab you if you even came near their car or the neighbour's, forget playing with a ball...

Mine was being given half a crown to spend the day with my brother at our local outdoor swimming pool during the summer holidays. The fact that I couldn't swim but I had an inflatable rubber ring didn't seem to worry my parents. I was told to keep in the shallow end and make sure my toes could touch the floor! Steve and his pals would slide down a snowy hill with an upturned car bonnet at high speed tumbling off when they reached the bottom As children we were able to explore and know our limitations on how fast you could ride a bike before you fell of or how far up a tree you could climb before a branch might snap! If you went home early during the school holidays your Mum would ask why. Regards Irene and Steve

Bridie I actually still wear my Timex watch every day and it is now 36 years old. But my first one was a Cinderella watch which came in a glass (plastic) slipper.

Going for a walk with a pack of jam butties and a bottle of water. Jumping over the brooks and falling in and going to my Aunties to get dry before going home, she had a big open fire in a black grate and a rope across the mantlepiece to dry clothes on. The smell of washing day only on a Monday, the tub, dolly and the mangle. Riding on a bike through the lines of washing strung across the back of the terraced houses and being chased. Playing hop scotch, top and Whip and piggy on the main road, you could play there for hours. Our grandchildren to play out but not sure they have as much fun as we did.

I'll tell him this afternoon to buy you a nice new Girne Rolex (guaranteed 36 minutes). OK, my pleasure... |

Why it is wrong what we, grandparents and our children, are doing for the grandchildren: buy them a present in a box and when they've unwrapped it - they start playing with the box...

RE msg 11, Woodspeckie: My grandchildren - smart as their granddad - would ask for the box and tell me I was ripped off again in TRNC...

One Christmas my 5 year old grandson asked me if Father Christmas lived in China, I asked why he said "because all the boxes say made in China".
