OK, so maybe it's a strange choice of subject but I really want to make my favourite chocolate mud cake and the recipe needs buttermilk. I've checked in all the supermarkets I've been in but haven't seen any, can anyone out there help me please?

Try ayran.A friend uses it instead of buttermilk in her recipes(scones etc)

If anyone can find a link to the song 'Drinking butter milk all the week, whiskey on a Sunday', I think by the Dubliners, I would be very grateful. Cheers

You've made my Sunday evening! I stupidly lost the original tape of the seven drunken nights with the last 'two nights' recordings on it. Very funny but absolute filth!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks

Roisin, thanks for that advice, I'll give it a try and let you know. I can give you the recipe if you would like it anyway? It is a lovely cake, all chocolatey and coffee and very rich and indulgent

To make a homemade substitute for buttermilk:

8 fluid ounces of milk

1 tablespoon white vinegar OR 1 tablespoon lemon juice

Pour the milk onto the lemon or vinegar

leave for 10 minutes

It will curdle and not go thick like like the real stuff but I have used this in soda bread and its fine. Good luck!!

Adagirl, thank you very much. Now I have 2 options to try. I must admit I did wonder about the milk/lemon juice combo as I've used it in the past for making cakes. Been too busy with chocolate flapjacks and banana, chocolate and walnut loaf this morning

Really Smithy? Thats good to know, you can actually make buttermilk from a buttermilk "starter" like you can yoghurt!! One spoon to a cup of milk to start it off etc..... I will get some next I go!!!

Hi boo.I'd love the recipe if you can put it on this forum. Good luck with the ayran and/or milk + vinegar mix.
