Had a converation the other night in the pub. I am BRITISH it says so on my passport and I am proud of same. In the same debate ( I use the term loosely)most English said no way I am English and nothing else.(the majority of people there at the time) What do the rest of the Welsh Scots Irish English think? p.s I was born in Edinburgh and I am proud of that but still British.

We of UK origin have mostly been regarded as British around the globe for many a century and our independant existance at times has been thanks to the services and many lost lives of our fellow compatriates , Scottish, Welsh,English and Irish, and I am happy to be regarded as British.

ROBnJo 1. It will never happen in my lifetime. So I will always have a British passport. 2. Only a fool would take Scottish banknotes on holiday as they are only Legal Tender in Scotland! (which opens another debate) OOps sorry just realised that question not directed at me but to Pilgrim but I have answered it anyway. Question to No1Doyen. What is your defination of English? and why not British?

Perhaps some of you lot ought to pay a visit to the First Wworld War cemeterys to realise what being British means. Will I see many of you at the dedication of thememorial on 8-11-09 I don't thinkk so. |

Brinsley. You have gone very quiet. Have you ever heard of Galipoli ? I think you will find that more people from the british Isles died than those from the antipodes. Don't be mislead by the anti British propoganda. We were all fighting for the same aim, don't let present day propaganda cloud your view.

Dear Nurseawful re msg 1 Kindly look at the British Passport you hold.. it says United Kingdom of Great Britain and NORTHERN Ireland Too many folk have lost their lives for the right to be called what they like.. My passports are travel documents that say where and when I was born.. that's IT.. I'm truly grateful for all those who gave their lives so as I can say that.. I've seen far too much prejudice in my life.. We are only what we are( nationality) by accident of birth...

BigMart Msg 21 Firstly, it's spelt GALLIPOLI or GELiBOLU. Secondly, are you sure there isn't an 'S' between g & m in your code name? Thirdly, did your Great Uncle die there? Fourthly, have you even been there? I think you need to read a book, if you can read, by Alan Moorehead about Gallipoli after which you'll be surprisingly educated! Richard

Richard; according to wiki, losses were; British 21.000. French 10,000. Aus 8,700. NZ 2,700. India 1,300. NZ lost a greater %age of population than the rest. Another useful tip Google; Gallipoli the facts and myths. And yet another; never put faith in a Mel Gibson movie unless you think that anti-English propoganda is more important than the truth. Gallipoli, Braveheart, The Patriot.

I have a friend whose father is Welsh, his mother is Scottish and he was born in England. He grew up in both Wales and England and says he's British. For him thats probably the easiet way to describe it, but as far as I'm concerned I am English.
